Description

In 1918-1919, D. W. Griffith turned from spectacles such as The Birth of a Nation, Intolerance and Hearts of the World to smaller films, which he called his "short story series." Among these is True Heart Susie. "There are those of us who consider True Heart Susie to be Griffith's masterpiece," writes Tom Gunning in his notes for a 2006 screening at the Pordenone Silent Film Festival. He goes on to praise the "narrative structure and point of view, as well as the fine details of performance, framing, and even the use of intertitles that makes a seemingly modest film such as this appear nearly incandescent in its confessional and emotional power." In an almost mythical American arcadia, Lillian Gish portrays a pure, prim girl who so loves her childhood sweetheart (Griffith's most charming boyish hero, Robert Harron) that she sells the family cow to anonymously finance his higher education, only to lose him to a more "modern" woman (Clarine Seymour) when he comes home. Gish's performance is among her best, her face what Gunning calls a "battleground of emotions, staging complete and progressive dramas of realization, recognition and despair."

As a bonus feature we offer Hoodoo Ann. This light comedy is Griffith-supervised and scripted (using the pseudonym Granville Warwick), although the actual direction is by Lloyd Ingraham. Mae Marsh is paired with Robert Harron; the actors had been often partnered since Biograph days, concurrently were in the modern story of Intolerance and continued to play leads together until Miss Marsh left the company at the end of 1916. Although the plot is a tangle of unlikely coincidence, the performers make it work, and "it is filled with those little touches for which Fine Arts pictures are famous," in the words of an original review.

5 out of 5 stars Charming old-fashioned double feature.......2007-09-14

This DVD is a special treat for silent film enthusiasts and anyone who longs for some good old-fashioned, sentimental and charming love stories of days gone by. Both "True Heart Susie" and the second film on this disc, "Hoodoo Ann" were written and produced by `the father of film' D.W. Griffith who is generally remembered today as the director of landmark epics such as "Intolerance" and "Birth of a Nation", so it might come as a pleasant surprise to some to see this other side of Griffith's work. "True Heart Susie", which Griffith also directed, is completely different from his historic epics of only a few years earlier, showing that he also had depth, sensitivity and compassion in filming this story of a simple country girl's unwavering love for her childhood sweetheart. The simple essence of the story is about true love, and that the girls who use "paint and powder" are only temporary flirtations or mistakes men make, but true hearts like Susie's remain faithful and wait for their one and only true love. Along with superb acting by screen legend Lillian Gish whose face and demeanour suit innocent girl roles so well, Griffith brings out many delicate details and touching moments in the film, making it one of his best ever films next to another 1919 production also starring Lillian Gish, namely "Broken Blossoms". It is fitting, therefore, that this DVD presents a beautiful, near-perfect remastered print of "True Heart Susie" along with a wonderful orchestral musical score by the highly-acclaimed Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, which greatly adds to the overall charm and tender mood of the story.

The second film, "Hoodoo Ann" also features experienced actors regularly used by Griffith in many earlier films, namely Mae Marsh and Robert Harron, who both starred in "Intolerance" in the same year, 1916. In this light-hearted story of another sweet and innocent country girl, Mae Marsh is just as convincing as Lillian Gish with her girly manner, and Robert Harron is dependable and reliable as usual, playing Hoodoo Ann's suitor who is puzzled when Ann says she can't marry him. But her reasons are all an amusing set of circumstances and misunderstandings, which make "Hoodoo Ann" simply a joy to watch. Once again, attention to detail is important in this clever, light comedy romance, and everything fits together smoothly along with Mae Marsh's fine performance making Hoodoo Ann a believable character. Picture quality is again extremely good, and it has a standard but very good piano accompaniment. For anyone who'd like to escape to a simpler, idyllic past without heavy drama, these two easy-to-watch early silent films won't disappoint, and in fact, might increase appreciation for both D W Griffith's varied works and silent films generally.

5 out of 5 stars Finally Professionally Restored!.......2007-08-31

I won't go into the plot of this movie, but is should suffice for me to say that this has to be one of the top, if not THE top Griffith film. Griffith was famous for his epics. Often, these were racist and very melodramic movies. There is none of that in this little gem of the silent era. Every thing in the story is simple and it flows along like a smooth, country stream. Nothing controversial here, and we are treated to a story of young love set in an America that has all but disappeared. The country setting, the daily activities of old time folk, all of this makes this movie a piece of old time Americana that silent film lovers cannot miss. Who hasn't been in love and been hurt? Ah, this film tugs at the heart strings!

I first discovered this wonderful gem twenty years ago when I bought a vhs copy from VideoYesteryear. The print used was bad...dark, blurry. I couldn't understand why none of the major video companies had not realeased a restored edition. I used to hound KINO and MILESTONE Films about working on this movie. Hats off to Image. The print quality is excellent. The music is good and goes well with the film, but I have to admit that I enjoyed the Rosa Rio score from my old YesterYear vhs copy. If you love the silent era as much as I do, please treat yourself to what will become one of your favorite films.

4 out of 5 stars A Bobby Harron Double Feature........2007-08-30

While the focus of this DVD is on actresses Lillian Gish and Mae Marsh, it is Robert (Bobby) Harron who is of prime interest to me after watching these two films. Harron is best known for his role in Griffith's INTOLERANCE as the young man who is falsely imprisoned in the Modern Story (also with Mae Marsh). He also appears briefly but memorably in BIRTH OF A NATION as Lillian Gish's younger brother. Having recently rewatched that along with these movies I have come away with a much greater appreciation of his talent which makes his tragic death in 1920 at the age of 27 even more so. Harron whether conciously or not was a master of body language. Watch his character in SUSIE as he goes from awkward schoolboy to small town minister. The awkwardness remains but subtly changes throughout which fits the role perfectly. Then check out his turn in HOODOO ANN where he's still shy but not awkward at all. Actresses Gish and Marsh are given the opportunity to really inhabit their characters which they do with an ease and naturalness that belies their years of experience. They make it seem fresh even though they have played these types of roles many times. There are many great scenes throughout SUSIE which also features the ill-fated Clarine Seymour who would also die in 1920 at the age of only 21 and we get an early glimpse of Carol Dempster who would dominate Griffith's films (and his private life) in the 1920's. Several scenes in HOODOO including the burning of the orphanage and Harron and Marsh at the movies are quite memorable. The prints while not restored are in very good shape (especially SUSIE) although it's something of a puzzle that I have yet to see a fully restored D.W. Griffith film. My one minor quibble is Rodney Sauer's score for TRUE HEART SUSIE. It's well performed but is just a little too quaint and old-fashioned in some scenes which undercuts some of the story. The score for HOODOO ANN enhances the film quite nicely. So let this DVD be your introduction to the wonderfully gifted but tragically short-lived actor Bobby Harron. Once you've seen him here it'll make you hungry for more. Aside from INTOLERANCE check out the Griffith BIOGRAPH SHORTS and HEARTS OF THE WORLD for an opportunity to see what he could do. Thanks to David Shepard and Film Preservation Associates for making this available.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review in 28 August 2007 New York Times.......2007-08-29

This DVD release has en extensive review in this morning's New York Times. This print is derived from near pristine originals in the British Film Institute. It is played at the correct speed, tinted according to D.W. Griffith's notations. I have a question for the previous reviewer S. Sathre (zentropa. europa). Do you also see little green men, have visions of grandeur and hear voices when no one else is around?

When Kim is suddenly diagnosed with cancer, it seems that their dream of becoming parents may not come true. But, she receives a positive prognosis and the adoption process continues. With Kim recovering from surgery and weakened by chemotherapy, Keith assumes most of the parental responsibilities when Brittany comes home. Then, Kim's illness recurs and soon Keith is a single parent. With barely any time for Keith to grieve, the agency refuses to finalize his adoption of Brittany and places her in another home. All of Keith's time and energy must now be devoted to preparation for the most important battle of his life. He lost his wife but he will not lose his child.

This is a moving true story. I was not impressed with Andrew
McCarthy in the movie. I think they could have found a better actor. It was nice to see Michael Learned in the role as an employee of the adoptive agency. Since she will always be remembered as 'Olivia Walton'.It was nice to see her playing a different role and doing a nice job. This movie will have you crying both tears of sadness and joy.Highly Recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle Intro To Pilates.......2006-01-26

I've been doing Yoga daily for 9 years and have added Pilates into my daily practice for the last few months. I was already doing a lot of core type work with programs like Baron Baptiste's "Core Power" and others, but Pilates has added another dimension to my daily practice that has been profound! I'm seeing muscles in my torso that were never as pronounced before and theres no doubt that Pilates has been the key!

I found this program to be very gentle and could be used by someone brand new to Pilates as well as someone already familiar with the system. It can also be used as a gentle and relatively short routine to use on days when someone wants to do some Pilates but doesn't want to push too hard.

This program begins with Ana Caban explaining the basic principles of Pilates before leading you through a gentle series of exercises. All are shown with modifications so they should be doable by anyone in reasonably good health. Even though these are simple exercises you can really get in touch with your core.

Ana Caban is a really pleasent and inspiring teacher to practice with and I look forward to working with this some more. I can see that I may add this to the collection for days when I want to go easy but get some Pilates in (I do already have her beginning and intermediate matwork programs.)

I would also recommend reading Alycea Ungaro's "Pilates, Body In Motion" if you'd like to get even more detailed, pose by pose instruction on this wonderful system of self care. Brooke Siler's "The Pilates Body" is also excellent.

2 out of 5 stars it's not beginner enough.......2005-09-14

It's beginner II. True I didn't see the "II" until it came. However, I've done Yoga and in my opinion it's not beginner.
If you are male, this one is not apppropriate.
There are no physical examples of modified poses. If you are fairly flexible already, for example if it's not strain at all to sit straigth up--all the way on sit bones, with legs straight out (and do some stretching from there) then this is ok for you. If not, get something else. I couldn't find anything however.

3 out of 5 stars Detailed Explanation for Pilates Newbies.......2005-09-05

Ana Caban thoroughly explains the correct posture, breathing techniques, form and mental approach to Pilates. She then goes through a short beginning Pilates workout, offering modifications for those beginners who are not yet ready for the full exercise.

This is not a video you would want to use over and over again. I'm glad I rented it (from Netflix). I used it three times and returned it and will move on to other Pilates workouts. This video did provide a good foundation for me before moving on to others.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Place to begin your Pilates Journey.......2005-05-28

I don't know of a better DVD to start your Pilates journey. I had 15 years of yoga experience and 10 of dance and I went out and got an intermediate DVD thinking I was ready for anything. Wrong. I found myself confused about what to do with my feet, and what's this leg squeezing talk all about? What the heck is the "powerhouse" exactly? Years of ballet had taught me to "turn out", but was that the same as a Pilates turn out?

I decided to go back to square one and really learn Pilates. I have no regrets. Now I have beginner DVDs to loan friends!

This DVD clearly lays out the principles and gets you going. If you are out of shape, you will feel this. If you have poor posture, you will notice that your alignment is getting better. I am now doing advanced Pilates, but there are some things on this DVD that I still go back to. If you are serious about really learning Pilates and can't get to a class, this is a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough but quickly outgrown overview.......2005-03-25

For those who are new to exercise in general and want to try Pilates out, this DVD can't be beat. Ana discusses the Pilates method and gives an overview of basic exercises that show up often in Pilates workouts (the hundred, roll-ups, single leg circles, rolling like a ball, single leg stretch, double leg stretch, spine stretch, and the saw). She does each movement slowly to emphasize the importance of proper form. Furthermore, she does half the reps in an easier, modified way, then half in the traditional way, although she says you can continue to do the modifications if that's what you feel comfortable with.

This is mainly an instructional video. It is 30 minutes, but Ana is talking much of that time. It is not much of a workout, instead the emphasis is on learning to do the exercises correctly. Learning this is extremely valuable to a Pilates practice, but once you get the movements down, this DVD is quickly outgrown. I'm glad I only rented it because I probably won't use it again, since I already know the basics and require a somewhat more challenging workout. However, I rate it five stars because it is so valuable to those who are totally new to the practice and not in shape.

For some people, this DVD will be way too easy even if they have never taken Pilates. I also recommend Ana's Beginning Mat Workout, which still contains a lot of instruction and modification options for beginners, but is more challenging and has more exercises.

4 out of 5 stars The Movie Poster/Cover Is Misleading . . ........2007-07-05

The movie poster/cover is misleading, in that the movie star names at the top do not correspond with the faces under the names. The names on the cover are purely for recognition (sales), but all are in supporting roles. This would make a difference in Ireland, but I doubt that the names are as recognizable here in the U.S. The credits are in alphabetical order which, although fair, give no clue as to top billing. I suggest that the stars are as pictured, not as captioned or credited, i.e., Tom Walsh (foreground) as Kevin Doherty, Laura Murphy (middle) as Kate and Ian Holm (background, from Chariots of Fire) as Joseph Maguire, Kate's grandfather. I'm glad I did not read the back cover or reviews before viewing, as the container reveals the plot, as do some reviews, and it was more of a mystery as to what happens, who gets killed or whether the horse is killed in the dramatization of the true story. I felt unsatisfied with the ending, but what can be expected because Shergar's fate is still unknown after all these years. The movie/story is an example of how kidnapping can be just as senseless as terrorism and it happens that terrorists utilize kidnapping here in a convergance stranger than fiction, thus, a good story. Odd to have a story so much about a racehorse, but so little about horse racing. I would have liked to have seen more of the horse and less of the actors whose Irish brogues were heavy enough to cause me to turn the volume up to understand; I played it back in a few spots to catch what was said, but some phrases I could not decipher. The landscape is beautiful on the Isle of Man location and I appreciated the glimpse into Irish life. Not rated here for a theatrical release, the movie is a TV-14 on U.S. cable, probably for violence, as the language seems suitable for all ages. Sectarian-violence terrorism has ruined Ireland, in my opinion, and this adds a horse to the long list of victims.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent inspiring horse movie!.......2007-01-11

This movie is excellently done. Allowing one to learn a lot about Irish culture and see a lot of on location scenery. The plot is very heart-warming. While it is true that the "based on a true story" element is not much of the story line, since not much is known about what happenned to the real Shergar, it is a charming conjecture.
It is a delightful film that's excellent for family viewing.

1 out of 5 stars The movie Shergar ought to come with a warning........2006-02-26

As a devoted movie-lover and horse-owner, I must say I regret watching this movie. The only good that came from watching it is at least now I know who Shergar was.

The failure of this film rests entirely in its plot, which is pure fantasy (or nightmare) and utterly unrealistic. The ending is so atrocious it destroyed the little bit of pleasure that I experienced watching beautiful horses and scenery.

Before I purchased the movie (on sale), I read the description of the plot thinking it might be similar to "Flash." "Flash" is a very well made fictional Disney movie about a boy who steals back his horse from an abusive owner and rides it from Georgia to New Jersey to save its life and be reunited with his merchant-marine father.

Instead, the movie "Shergar" should come with a warning. It is far more similar to "Phar Lap," a well-produced drama which condenses the life of Australia's most famous flat-track Thoroughbred and ends with Phar Lap's sudden and mysterious death.

Like many pleasure-horse owners, I'm not an expert on the history--even the recent history--of international equine celebrities. But even if I had known that Shergar was most likely killed by his abductors, the horribly patched-up ending of the movie made me nearly physically ill with grief and shock.

I will probably keep the movie just as a part of my horse film collection, but I will never watch it again. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, but in this case the truth (still a mystery) is MUCH preferred to this piece of fiction, "based on a true story."

If you love horse movies, purchase a nice new DVD of Coppola's Classic, "The Black Stallion," or Disney's "Flash." You'll get all the beauty, suspense, and thrills without a sickening ending.

2 out of 5 stars Again, for the horse.......2006-01-17

Who wrote this thing? Who directed it? Who could make Ian Holm almost less than good? Who scored it? The insensitive inappropriate music that swallowed up and spat out our emotions was criminal. What happened to Mickey Rourke's face? That was also criminal. Some plastic surgeon somewhere made him look like Frankenstein's monster...all he left out were the neck bolts. Why was O'Rourke in it in the first place? He played a small, wooden, and rather pointless part...then they killed him, rather ingloriously. As for the story woven around the very sad truth of Shergar's kidnapping for ransom by the throroughly inglorious IRA (so O'Rourke's death was at least right in one way), it wasn't bad, it had a certain charm. The boy playing the actual hero here tried his best with the character as written. But a real boy would have gone straight to the cops and the real Shergar would have been home in an hour. For his good deed, the boy would have been a national hero and no one would be throwing him back in gaol. Bad plot point, very bad. But as he didn't, but instead kept running that wonderful horse around the Irish countryside (some beautiful scenery) we got to meet a hippie-tinker and his charming daughter...who is this minute, I hope, enjoying a solid career in the Irish theater. As for running the horse off a cliff (ala Thelma and Louise), the least the writer could do was allow the boy to die with the horse. After all, it was his decision to kill him in such a way and his responsibility to do to himself what he'd done to the horse. But no, he comes alive again and we are all supposed to be happy, happy, even adding a weanling Shergar foal to make us even happy happier. Horsewallop. I was totally cheesed off. Kill the real horse, save the made-up boy, and we all leave the movie satisfied? Not bloody likely.

I thought about the real kidnapping after the movie was over (poor thing that it was), and decided though the IRA might well have been stupid enough to kidnap a great horse, an Irish national hero, for which no one was going to pay them money so they might buy bombs and more arms, they would not be stupid enough to kill him when their ill-conceived plan failed. He was still worth money. And a lot of it. In my opinion, they sold him to the Japanese or the Arabs or the Auzzies for good coin of whichever realm. If they had killed him, they would have wanted us to know...but no proof was ever forthcoming. They'd want us to know in order to show the kind of men they were: dedicated to their cause, serious, not to be taken lightly, and vengeful. Of course, if they killed the horse most people would see them as stupid, cruel, insensitive, and chained to a cause that means nothing in the end but one stupid bloody act after another. If Shergar wound up in a foreign country, two things would happen. One, the rich owner would know it was Shergar, even if he couldn't say so...just as buyers of stolen artwork live with no one knowing. Two, he could breed him, and though the results couldn't be openly named Shergar's progeny, some of them were bound to inherit Daddy's brilliance, and _they_ could be named, and go to become valuable themselves. I know someone in the _know_ claimed they killed him right after the kidnapping because he was so difficult to handle. But they would say that, wouldn't they...to cover the secret deal they made with someone somewhere.

That's what I'd like to believe anyway...and it certainly could have happened that way. My reality allows Shergar a long life somewhere warm, where he covered a lot of good mares, and is only now getting ready to die of a contented old age.

If nothing else, the movie made me think. Hence the two stars. One really.

4 out of 5 stars What really happened to Shergar?.......2005-12-17

More than twenty years after the disappearance of the real-life great race horse, Shergar, the mystery continues as to what really happened to him. [Those involved, years later, said he was so high-strung they shot him just hours or a day or two after he was stolen because they couldn't handle him. Since Shergar was owned by the Aga Khan, worth about $4-5 billion at the time, ransom was immediately ruled out.] With this in mind, this movie should be watched, not as a docudrama but as fiction, with only the horse's name and kidnapping being factual.

Both my wife and I were fully captivated by the story until the unexpected ending. As with most movies, there are a few "holes" in the story, but not enough to detract from the adventure and suspense. We enjoyed the movie (and we own more than a thousand DVD movies related to kids and teens). Because we could not stop rooting for the boy to save the horse, I rate it an above average, but not a classic, horse movie.

[Parents might wish to discuss with their kids what the boy should have done with the hores instead of what he actually did.]

Description

Choices of the Heart: The Margaret Sanger Story is the dramatic story of public heroism, personal passion, and the private sacrifice of one woman's historic fight to promote family planning and sex education in the early part of this century. New York City, 1914. Modern progress confronts the oppressive prohibitions of the past. Moral crusaders enforce rigid laws banning "obscene" materials - including literature on safe sex and family planning. The result: desperate women with too little money and too many children risking their lives to end unwanted pregnancies. Working as a nurse in New York's poorest neighborhoods, Margaret Sanger (Dana Delany, China Beach) boldly fights to end this epidemic of ignorance. However, zealots led by the formidable Anthony Comstock (Rod Steiger, On the Waterfront), Chairman of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, are determined to stop her rebellious campaign. Facing prison - and making headlines - for daring to voice her opinions, Sanger is forced to part with her loving husband (Henry Czerny, The Ice Storm), three children and flee the country. Yet, public support for her becomes so strong that she overcomes the attacks of her puritanical opponents.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I Absolutely Loved This Movie!!!.......2007-08-17

Starring Dana Delany in one of her most moving performances, this movie dramatizes the inspiring true story of Margaret Sanger, a registered nurse and woman of uncommon valor who championed the reproductive rights of women in the slums of New York City during the early part of 20th century. Spending time in jail for her convictions, she eventually went on to found the organization now known as Planned Parenthood. The presentation was beautifully cast, beautifully written, and beautifully performed. It is an absolute "must see" for anyone interested in the history of women's rights, of nursing, and of health care in general.

My kids really enjoyed this movie as they were growing up.Their ages ranged from 7 to 14 years. It was a good family movie.

1 out of 5 stars Reeks akin to three-week-old unrefrigerated fish.......2006-03-12

No, the putrid smell of rotting fish is more tolerable than viewing a movie that is so horrid it can't even be shoved into the "cult classic" category!!!

Plot? Well, an AmerIndian interacts with two teens, several poachers, a bear, parents, game wardens and sundry critters that lend ambience to a warm fuzzy all critters are brothers except for the bad guys who have the rifle aiming ability of, well, a bear shooting a rifle.

Inane, senseless, non-plausible yet far-removed from fantasy. I am shocked and awed, perhaps even astounded, that a real human would place their name as being responsible for the creation of this coma-inducing time waster.

Flee...... run away.... do not come near any electronic device conveying this so-called movie.

The only use I can imagine for this attrocity is to give it as a gift to someone you despise, that you hate with liver quivering unadulterated passion.

The only practical use I can think of for this incredibly horrific movie is to use it to garner confessions from criminal suspects. Even then, once a jury learned a confession was gained from the suspect being forced to view this movie repetitively, it is likely the confession would be tossed aside and the detectives using this movie would be charged with some sort of cruelty to a prisoner if not a crime against humanity.

I must admit, though, my scathing commentary has been watered down. The movie is even worse that what I declare it to be.

1 out of 5 stars true heart.......2005-01-18

I was very disappointed with this DVD. The character development is poor and stereotypical. The plot is too simplistic and unbelievable even for children.

I have lived in the area where the area was filmed. There are no wolves, kodiak bears (a few black bears), moose or elk in the Tantalus range. The producer could have put a more effort into research.

Description

At age 23, Eric "Hank" Gathers (Victor Love, Shadow of Doubt) escaped the inner city to become one of America's top college basketball stars. As leader of Loyola Marymount's team, his career is on the fast track. He's certain to be a top NBA draft choice.

With love and encouragement from his mother, Lucille (Nell Carter, Give Me a Break!) and his best friend, Bo Kimble (Duane Davis, Under Siege), Hank pushes himself higher and higher - then tragedy strikes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Drama for the passionate basketball lover........1999-08-30

Eric "Hank" Gathers was a very dedicated basketball player from day one. He thrilled the nation in the late 80's when he took little Loyola Maramount University to the top, while leading all Division-1 athletes in scoring and rebounding his Junior Year. It was in his Senior year that the energetic Gathers suffered a minor heart attack, forcing him to sit out an unwanted period of time. Against doctors orders, he came back too early only to suffer a fatal heart attack near the end of that same season. The movie takes you through Hank's breif life from the age of eleven all the way up to his sudden death. This drama shows you how he and his best friend Bo Kimble always dreamed to make it to the NBA. Bo had it easy, always being the star; while Hank was the underdog, and had to go through many obstacles to get to the top. The year after Hank's tragic death Bo was drafted where he and Hank had always talked about being drafted...in the lottery. This is a true story.

Kirsten Dunst demonstrates her star charisma in True Heart. Dunst and Zachery Ty Bryan star as twins whose plane has crashed in the Canadian wilderness, where they are rescued by a Native American named Khonanesta (August Schellenberg). Khonanesta is fighting to save a giant Kodiak bear from villainous poachers (we know they're bad because their leader has a claw for a hand). Though initially suspicious, the kids soon join him in his struggle, and in turn his simple wisdom helps them resolve their grief over their dead father. Dunst is a naturally engaging actress, but her efforts are thrown away on this clumsily written bundle of clichés. Aside from the bear--because who can resist a great big bear--the rest of the cast flounders. --Bret Fetzer

You'd never guess it from the title, but Courage Mountain is a sequel to children's classic, Heidi. In this handsome production, filmed in Europe and set during World War I, a teenaged Heidi (Juliette Caton) leaves Switzerland to attend school in Italy. Things go wrong from the start. The other girls make fun of her country ways, then the school is seized by the army. Due to a misunderstanding, Heidi and several classmates are separated from their beloved headmistress (Leslie Caron) and sent to an Oliver Twist-like orphanage. Fortunately, they're able to escape. Using her mountaineering skills, Heidi leads them on an expedition across the Alps to her grandfather's house. Charlie Sheen, who plays her sweetheart Peter, acquits himself nicely as a soldier who assists the girls, but his American accent sounds out of place. Odd casting aside, this family adventure is faithful to the spirit of the original story. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
