Bill Bixby plays a 19th-century gambler who inherits responsibility for three orphans, but the kids in turn have something of value: a huge gold nugget. This Disney film from 1975 is an enjoyable potboiler with its sentimentality under control and the accent on laughs, most of which are provided, not unexpectedly, by Tim Conway and Don Knotts as thieves who want to get their hands on the treasure. An easy, safe film for children. You can't go wrong with this. --Tom Keogh
Description
Head for cover! Don Knotts and Tim Conway are Wild West outlaws who can't hit the broad side of a barn -- but never miss when it comes to rounding up laughs! Hilarious and kid friendly.......2007-07-29
Don Knotts and Tim Conway are about the funniest pair ever and this is a great movie to watch with your kids. I enjoy watching comedies with my kids and there isn't a whole lot out nowadays that you can safely watch without embarrassing moments.
Disappointed.......2007-07-05
This DVD was poor quality, and you could not really enjoy the movie, good movie, just poor quality, plus I thought it would have more of Tim and Don in it.
Excellant.......2007-05-07
If you are looking for a clean funny movie without sex, violence, and cursing this is the right movie. It is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Very family orient and I recommend it to anyone.
First they blew into town, then they BLEW it up!.......2007-03-22
Excellent family comedy! Don Knotts & Tim Conway are at their best!
Three orphaned siblings are forced upon confirmed bachelor Russel Donovan(Bixby) in a 19nth century boom town of Quake City, California. After an earthquake shakes the area, the children find a large gold nugget worth tens of thousands of dollars. But their newfound wealth is causing more problems than it's solving, so they decide to "give" the gold to 2 bumbling outlaws, Theodore & Amos (Knotts&Conway). But the only way they can get the gold is to steal it from the bank vault where it's being held for safekeeping.
Quotes:
(Amos makes Theodore angry)
Theodore: You couldn't see through a barbed wire fence!
Amos: Theodore?
Theodore: That head of yours couldn't hold straw!
Amos: Theodore?
Theodore: You couldn't sell hacksaws in a jail!
-----------------
Amos: How much money do you figure that dudes got in front of him?
Theodore: About five hundred.
Amos: Five hundred? WOW! You know, that'll be, uh, that's two hundred apiece!
APPLE DUMPLING GANG.......2007-02-10
THIS WAS A VERY GOOD FILM. WE REALLY LIKE DON KNOTTS AND TIM CONWAY.

"One man can make a difference," intones a dying millionaire--well, one man and a superduper car, backed with millions of dollars! Welcome to the deliciously ridiculous world of Knight Rider, the early '80s TV series that launched the career of David Hasselhoff and his magnificent coif (both later seen in the insanely popular Baywatch). After being shot in the face, detective Michael Long is revived as Michael Knight (Hasselhoff) and partnered with an indestructible talking car called K.I.T.T. (voiced by William Daniels). The duo travel around the country solving crimes--basically, it's The Lone Ranger with the car as Silver and Tonto combined. Supported by finicky British executive Devon Myles (Edward Mulhare) and sexy engineer Bonnie Barstow (Patricia McPherson), Knight and K.I.T.T. take on everything from motorcycle gangs to corporate crooks to K.I.T.T.'s own evil twin, K.A.R.R.
Like any good cheese, Knight Rider has only grown more pungent with age. Decked out in alarming '80s fashions (check out that blue Members Only jacket in the pilot), earnestly spouting some of the worst dialogue in the history of television, the absurdly handsome Hasselhoff radiates the unique charisma that's made him a Teutonic cult figure. In addition to the 21 episodes of the first season, Knight Rider: Season One includes a 1991 TV movie, Knight Rider 2000, that tried to launch a revamped series set in the near future (lacking the cheerful touch of creator Glen Larson, the attempt sank into oblivion) and brief interview footage (including Hasselhoff describing when he read the original script: "It was glowing in my hands. This was gold.") It's unlikely this boxed set will appeal to anyone who didn't become a fan of the show at an impressionable age, but for those fans, Knight Rider: Season One is gold. --Bret Fetzer

Knight Rider DVD's.......2007-02-06
While some who purchase this first (and often corny) season of Knight Rider are concerned by the audio dubbing, the lack of this and that, and who did what...Do not let them fool you, it is a great buy for anyone who grew up loving the show. Those of us who are not DVDphiles will still enjoy most of what is included. So put the critics to bed and buy it.

This is a great DVD collection with commentary from David Hasselhoff. It is well packaged and has the titles of the Episodes on the back cover for easy reference. This is a must for any Knight Rider Fan. I have enjoyed this set very much.
Finally, its here in NTSC! - No more importing from the UK!.......2006-03-24
Ahhh... The early 1980's. Reagan was president, new wave dominated the radiowaves and MTV actually played MUSIC VIDEOS! Ask anyone who grew up during this period what their favorite non-animated show was as a kid and they'll probably say "Knight Rider." KR, as its affectionately called by some fans, may seem quirky and obscure nowadays with its atari centipede sound effects, poofie aqua-net hairdo's, over-acting and "sooo not the original artist" song usage, but we didn't care...
To us this was the best thing on TV besides Smurfs and He-Man and it appealed to our parents as well. KR was like James Bond meets Herbie the Love Bug. While our mothers drooled over the blue-eyed hunky Hasselhoff, we were captivated by the ominous-looking but friendly talking black Trans Am, K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand) we giggled everytime theives tried to steal KITT and failed, and we cried when KITT got destroyed (but they -always- managed to rebuild him).
The visual quality of these discs is damn pretty good. It would've been nice if they had director/actor interviews and maybe some behind the scenes words with George Barris (the guy who built all the KITT cars for the show) I can't say I care for the double sided discs, as they are terribly easy to smudge.

Alexandre Dumas's classic tale of fraternal squabbling makes a more than satisfactory transition to celluloid with this 1976 made-for-television swashbuckler. Viewers familiar with the more recent Leonardo DiCaprio version may be stymied at first by the non-MTV pace and the rather unhip presence of Richard Chamberlain in the lead role(s). This well-lensed actioner overcomes a somewhat pokey first half to emerge as a terrific adventure, complete with plenty of derring-do, some sharply pointed dialogue, and a wonderful performance by the incomparably malevolent Patrick McGoohan. Rousing fun for burgeoning rapscallions of all ages. Director Mike Newell would later find success in a different genre with Four Weddings and a Funeral. Ian Holm, Louis Jordan, and Ralph Richardson round out the embarrassingly rich supporting cast. --Andrew Wright

Best Version of the Tale Needs a US DVD.......2007-08-08
I've watched my VHS tape of this many times, for the tight script, plentiful action, fast pace, rousing score, and wonderful supporting cast (Patrick McGoohan and Ralph Richardson the standouts). But the heart of the picture is Richard Chamberlain's dual performance as the good and evil brothers: mesmerizing to watch the change in expression and bearing as he moves between the two. One of my favorite films.

A Case Of Extreme Sibling Rivalry- -17th Century Style.....................2005-06-30
This is a very entertaining and well-done television production from the late 1970's, set in 1600's France, and based on the historical adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas. The producers spared no expense for this television movie........the stellar ensemble cast includes many noteworthy names from both sides of the Atlantic, and the lavish French chateaus and castles used for all the location filming are truly spectacular.
The compelling story of identical twin brothers, each the antithesis of the other, and each fighting to become the rightful ruler of France, has been successfully adapted to film numerous times--first in 1939, and most recently in 1998, starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead. In this version from 1977, Richard Chamberlain handles the dual roles of the self-absorbed King Louis XIV, and his sensitive, commoner brother, Philippe. Having previously performed in classical period films such as Portrait of A Lady, Hamlet, The Three Musketeers, and The Count Of Monte Cristo, all to much acclaim, Richard Chamberlain brought both experience and panache to this double role. (The American actor became so adept at portraying classical roles, U. S. producers began questioning his ability to take on contemporary American roles.) He gives wonderful performances as both characters, but particularly shines in his work as King Louis XIV, the unscrupulous, reprehensible ruler of France. He demonstrates a seemingly effortless on-screen chemistry with Patrick McGoohan, who gives a memorable performance as the equally loathsome enabler to the King, Fouquet.
Richard Chamberlain's and Patrick McGoohan's noteworthy portrayals are wonderfully enhanced by the exceptional work done by an all star supporting cast. Ralph Richardson, Ian Holm, Louis Jourdan, and Jenny Agutter are all marvelous in their respective roles, adding depth, richness, and overall excellence to the final production.
Though it was filmed almost 30 years ago, this remains a very entertaining and beautifully produced adaptation of the beloved Dumas novel. The movie does not drag, and moves along at a steady pace as it builds to it's rightful conclusion of good overcoming evil, or in this particular case, good brother overcoming evil brother, to secure his rightful place on the throne.
Richard Chamberlain is excellent.......2005-05-05
Richard Chamberlain had already proved himself a fine actor before starring in this TV production of "The Man in the Iron Mask," but here he truly gives the performance of a lifetime. Performances, I should say, because he plays two different (VERY different) roles: King Louis XIV and his long lost twin brother, Phillippe.
Louis is a spoiled, infantile (his courtiers know perfectly well to deliberately lose at croquet lest they "risk another tantrum") and often cruel man, who lives in splendor while his subjects starve. He treats his long-suffering wife like garbage, openly flirting and carrying on with other women, and at one point he even viciously rips her wig off in public after calling her a "mountain of sallow flesh." Not surprisingly, no one likes Louis all that much; even his mother is hard pressed to say anything nice about him.
Meanwhile, Phillippe, totally unaware of his relation to Louis, is mysteriously kidnapped from his cozy home and thrown into the Bastille. But it's not what you think -- his kidnappers are the ageing Three Musketeers, who, fed up with their "water lily" of a ruler, have a plan to oust him and replace him with his identical twin, Phillippe. (Though Phillippe was born first and is therefore the rightful king, they insist that he rule as Louis XIV because of France's instability.) The Bastille was a "safe place" to stash Phillippe, or so they thought; at least two people, upon accidentally seeing Phillippe, are struck by his resemblance to Louis. One of them reports to Fouquet, the king's closest adviser. Upon verifying Phillippe's identity, Fouquet breaks the news to Louis, who, quite rightly fearing usurpation, hatches a cruel plan: imprisoning Phillippe for life in a run down castle in a distant part of France. But even that isn't enough: "No one must look upon his face," Louis tells Fouquet. Hence the iron mask, which is locked upon poor Phillippe in a gut-wrenching sequence.
The rest of the movie is about the Three Musketeers rescuing Phillippe, telling him the truth, and proceeding ahead with their plans. Meanwhile, Phillippe falls in love with Louise, a pretty lady of the court who the king is also unsuccessfully trying to romance (and as it turns out, Fouquet likewise tried to romance, and when she spurned his advances, he had her father thrown in the Bastille), and there's plenty of wonderfully intricate plotting.
While the performances are strong all around (except for maybe Jenny Agutter as Louise), it's Richard Chamberlain who carries the entire movie. Phillippe starts out an ordinary person, but his grotesque mistreatment starts to make him almost savage. Not surprisingly, the desire for revenge burns white-hot inside him, and he finally gets to realize it at the end. He also has a remarkable moment when, after having assumed Louis XIV's identity, he meets his mother for the first time: he is so emotional that he can barely get the words out, yet manages to cover it by telling her how beautiful she looks. The queen mother, who of course doesn't know his true identity, beams and says, "My Louis?" as if wondering that maybe now she can finally truly love her son.
Meanwhile, his turn as Louis is admirably restrained. Most actors would not be able to resist chewing the scenery while playing such a vile, decadent character, but Chamberlain instead gives a nuanced, surprisingly subtle performance. Louis is thoroughly despicable, and Chamberlain is clearly having fun playing such a juicy villain, but he doesn't go over the top.
Patrick McGoohan also shines as the clever, vain, heartless Fouquet. He often speaks in a type of growl that reminds me of Jeremy Irons, and his refined sadism is chilling to watch. It makes it all the more satisfying that, in the end, Fouquet is deceived by a simple seamster -- and that he himself is the one who seals his own fate by incorrectly naming Louis as the pretender.
Fun and adventure for all!.......2005-01-10
I recently rented this tape from the local library, after seeing the 1998 version starring Leonardo DiCaprio. I was amazed that I actually enjoyed this one better. It is not so dark in tone, and I enjoy the scenery more. It has everything you would want in an adventure film: lots of swashbuckling, a villain, and a likeable hero. The acting is also superb, with great performances by Richard Chaimberlin and Louis Jordan. This is a fun adventure film that the entire family can enjoy. Do yourself a favor and get this!

I gambled on this one...and lost..........2005-03-23
When one thinks about some of the great films to come out of Hollywood with regards to gambling and such, movies like Rounders (1998), The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Owning Mahowny (2003), and The Sting (1973), to name a few, come to mind. One film that does not come to mind is Stacy's Knights (1982) for the specific reason that it sucks. I know, I know, you're probably shocked to hear me use such language, and usually I can find better ways to express myself, but this film just sucked, plain and simple. You may ask what was I expecting with a film like this? Academy gold? Not at all, but geez...it was almost like they tried to make it as bad as it was on purpose. Here's a bit of trivia for you...what does this film have in common with the Oscar winning movie Dances with Wolves (1990), besides the fact both star Kevin Costner? Well, I'll tell you...Michael Blake wrote both films, and also both films were produced by Jim Wilson (he also took the role of director here). The film also stars Andra Millian, who's probably best remembered from the rather annoying late 80's TV show "thirtysomething". Also appearing is Mike Reynolds (Young Lady Chatterley II).
The film begins with some very annoying ubiquitous disco-like music (get used to it, as you'll be hearing it throughout the film) that contains various gambling references, along with the continuing chorus of `Double Down', so, with that, and the showing of a lot of neon lights, I'm assuming we're in for a film about gambling and such...we see a frumpy, mousy woman, with perhaps the biggest glasses I've ever seen short of Elton John in his glam heyday, making her way to a blackjack table, playing one hand, losing, and then leaving (by the way, the dowdiness of her appearance certainly foreshadows the possibility of a fabulous makeover later on in the film). Turns out she came all the way to Reno, from San Francisco (or possibly L.A.), and then drove all the way back...okay...arriving home she runs crying to her very ugly drama teacher (I'm not seeing where this is going at all) who comforts her, and then the two return to Reno to gamble some more. Turns out the bespeckled girl is named Stacy, and she has some kind of ability to count cards, but hasn't quite learned how to master said skill. Her meager attempts catch the eye of a hanger on named Will Bonner (Costner), who talks his way into partnering up with Stacy because, apparently, he knows the `system', but can't play worth squat. Eventually through his tutelage Stacy becomes very successful, but now the Casino manager, Shecky Poole (Reynolds), has his eye on her and her companions, as he thinks they're cheating, but can't prove it...which leads to bit of tragedy as we see Casino owners can be quite vindictive. In an effort to get revenge, Stacy assembles a team of card counters, deciding to hit Shecky where he lives...in the pocket book.
If I had to pick one element of this film as being the worst, it would have to be the story, followed closely by the script. The characters are nonsensical and have no other reason for existing other than that's they way they're written. Costner's character is a prospector whose got some sort of gambling fever, along with being some sort of expert with cards, but can't play because he loses too much. Say what? And then Millian's character wants to be a lawyer, but suffers from a lack of self-confidence, so she decides to take up blackjack because she has the ability to count cards well...oh yeah, and then she, with the help of some old man who's supposed to be a mystical gambling guru (the cards are alive) that the casinos pay to keep him out, harnesses her skills to the point where she can tell what the next card from a deck before it's turned over...right...and then she assembles a team of cheaters at the end to take down the casino and the evil Shecky (complete with interviews of prospective gamblers...what, did she put an ad in the paper?). As far as the dialog, here's a pretty standard (the standard being awful) sample that occurs when the drama coach asks Costner's character about Shecky, the casino manager (his casino is perhaps the worst run gambling parlor I've ever seen), `Is he a nice guy?', to which Costner's character replies. `Heart like a barracuda.' What does that mean? The movie is filled with this sort of thing, like someone trying to be all hip and such but failing miserably. The story drags and drags and drags...the performances aren't all that bad, as it seemed like a lot of the actors were just here for the check and possibly some experience (I bet Costner would probably like to forget this little nugget of joy about as much as he would a film released four years later called Malibu Hot Summer (1986) aka Sizzle Beach, U.S.A.). Some things to watch out for...the drama coach, now all gussied up (she's still pretty nasty looking) seducing the casino owner Shecky, so that Stacy and her gang can run roughshod over the tables, scamming a load of dough. Pay particular attention the scene where Shecky, an older, greasy, unattractive man is prancing around in his red briefs...yuck.
The full screen (1.33:1) picture is passable, as is the Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo audio. I was shocked to see the inclusion of some meager extras, especially since this is a Rhino release, and they're not usually known for such. The extras include some lame animated bios (all of three), a still picture slideshow (looks like still shots taken off the TV), and a trailer for a film called Galaxina (1980), starring former Playboy centerfold Dorothy Stratten, before she got murdered by her crazy boyfriend.

Description
When the fear stops... you're dead! Detective Sam Dietz (The Accused's Leo Rossi battles his most unspeakable adversaries ever in two shocking thrillers! In Relentless 3, a savagely cunningly serial killer is carving up innocent young women and taunting police by mailing them pieces of his handiwork. Reluctantly, Dietz joins the case which takes a nightmarish personal twist when the sexual-psychopath turns his murderous attentions to Sam's beautiful girlfriend. But as the maniac closes in, Sam realizes there's something hauntingly familiar about the killer's grisly technique-- a clue that will lead Sam to the shocking truth and plunge him into a chilling confrontation with absolute, uncontrollable evil! Then Dietz returns in Relentless 4 as a bloodthirsty serial killer with a passion for ritualistic executions picks his targets based on their connection to a beautiful psychiatrist (X-Men's Famke Janssen) who's hiding a deadly secret of her own! RELENTLESS 3 is rated "R" for strong violence and sexuality, and for language. RELENTLESS 4 is rated "R" for violence and some strong sexuality.
