Other than being a parade of Hollywood's hunkiest. Ocean Eleven has a good, solid story. Danny Ocean fresh out of the joint can't take being on the straight and narrow, plus he wants his wife back. Lucky for him and his gang-she just so happens to be dating a powerfully rich casino owner. Instead of taking his anger and frustration out of her, he figures the way to win her back is to rob her boyfriend and prove to her that the casino owner would choose his money over her. Is this even a question? We're not talking about $20. Daniel was trying to steal 163 million dollars. Not to betray my sex, but no woman is worth that amount of money. And it's an unfair question because Daniel would most likely choose the money too. Because by his own question, he could have given it back and simply taken Tess. But that minor fact seems to escape Tess and she goes running back to her hubby. Other than, this is a slick sort of hustle from a team that should be in the circus. Overall: Highly recommended.

Once upon a time..................2007-08-14

Once Upon A Thyme, children, there was a movie called "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." It was a movie based on a 50 year-old book of the same name, which had 2 sequels. Those 2 books were also made into movies, and those 3 movies were very very very good, and all was right with the world.

THEN ... The Powers That Bee decided that because those 3 movies were so very good (and so very profitable) then ALL successful movies must now come in threes: and lo and behold we had 3 XMens, 3 Spidermans, 3 Austin Powers, 3 Pirates, and of course 3 Oceans. Never mind the fact that the "Rings" movies came in a trilogy because the original novels came that way. None of these sequels had any reason for being, other than the first movie made a lot of money. And in every single case, the third movie was the worst of the bunch, the inspiration and steam that made the first movie a success long, long gone.

This is an olde, olde story children. Witness 4 Jaws, 3 Rambos, 6 Rockys, 742 Bonds, 3 (and counting) Indiana Jones, ad infinitum. We can even go back 70 years to 6 Thin Mans, the last 3 of which weren't so great. But no matter. Don't expect H'wood to learn from the dearth of joy in their sequels, because we keep lapping them up.

Nevertheless, there is always the FIRST of all of these movies to return to, and that is what we must do when all is said and spent. Go back to the original (well, the remake of the original, anyway) and remember a time not so long ago when charisma had a name, and its name was "Ocean's Eleven." This is the only movie they needed to make.

A Throwback Worth Keeping.......2007-08-08

OCEAN'S ELEVEN is one movie among many that is symptomatic of a Hollywood problem: that is, a lack of new ideas. This is a remake, somewhat lost perhaps, among all the other remakes, sequels, and so on, that have marred the creative braintrust of Tinseltown. But OCEAN'S ELEVEN is fun, fun, fun--and Hollywood is short on that, too, these days.

There's another thing that makes this movie both good and rare: an ensemble cast. Really, friends and neighbors, how often do you get this caliber of a cast in a modern movie: Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Carl Reiner, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Andy Garcia, and yes, Bernie Mac? Good gravey, I haven't seen the likes since THE LONGEST DAY. And they all play their parts unselfishly (except, perhaps, for Clooney--but he's the star).

Oh, yeah. It's all about a heist, a team of eleven strangely likeable criminals who seek to knock off Vegas's three biggest casinos. Watching them work is a blast!

I tried to watch this movie but after the first seconds of hearing Clooney's voice I got sleepy. My eyes blurred at the screen and everything got dark siewpfieys...oops sorry I am having a flashback to the moment and forgot how to type. I didn't see this movie and don't know if I ever will. So don't bother with my opinion. It is just one out of many.

Almost as funny as the original (starring the" Rat Pack") Enjoyed Don Cheadle (so out of character) and of course
seeing Elliot Gould and Carl Reiner again was a hoot.

This is my favorite ocean movie out of the three, though i love them all. The addition of katherine zeta jones is totally awesome! The movie is fresh with great humor. Each character had a great role. Very entertaining movie.

Shallow Ocean.......2007-08-05

Substituting Star Power over story, "Oceans 12" is a big gang flick that aimlessly wanders through its 2 hours. The crew of Danny Ocean reassemble after Benedict (Andy Garcia) tracks them down and demands restitution for his stolen money. The crew (minus Carl Reiner) travel to Paris and get into an ego war with super-theif Vincent Cassale (who seems awfully petty for a super-theif), then spend the remainder of the movie out-witting him and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who falls for Brad Pitt. With the exception of Matt Damon, eveyone else plays minor roles.

Unlike "Ocean's Eleven," where everyone had a bit to chew on, the focus hits mostly the superstars. Bernie Mac is taken out early, and spends most of his time sitting mum in a jail cell. There is only one decent set piece in this plunder clod of a film, and that is Bruce Willis' cameo as he recognizes Julia Roberts as Tess Ocean faking being Julia Roberts. (And maybe the breakdance-in-the-laserbeam heist bit). But otherwise, "Ocean's 12" spends far too much time acting like one big inside joke; the really cool stars goofing in a movie because they can. Somebody should have reminded them that movie stars need plots to be interesting, and other people in home movies (beautiful people or not) are still boring people in home movies.

An Ok film.......2007-07-21

This is not that easy to follow. Compared toOcean's eleven, I had a hard time keeping up with what was happening through the film. It was hard to keep track of Clooney's character, and all the others. I would reccomend people see Ocean's eleven. In my opinion, this sequel doesn't make it as a good film.

The plot was slightly more serious in this film, and it was dominated by Pitt and Zeta-Jones (mostly Zeta-Jones). The main drawbacks for the sequel are that the heist is not the major focus, the "supporting" characters did not get the opportunity to play pivotal roles in the heist, and it lacked the lighthearted atmosphere and stylishness of the first film. While Catherine Zeta-Jones is a very lovely woman, I felt that her plot was dull, interesting and terribly predictable, and I despised her character as the foil. The sub-plot (the heist) and the other characters deserved more screen time because that is what made me love the first movie. Can't really say much more about the movie because it was utterly forgettable and a waste of time.

"Ocean's Twelve" faces the same difficulties as any sequel. By this I don't mean those movies that are essential components to trilogies that continue the story; I mean those movies that basically take an established cast and throw them in a completely new storyline. The problem is trying to meet the expectations of an audience that loved the first and wants a new movie to love for all the same reasons. So many people were disappointed to learn that "Ocean's Twelve" was not yet another heist movie.

This film had to be a sequel. The plot takes advantage of the relationships the characters developed in the first film, and throws in many subtle jokes the average viewer may miss if they don't listen closely. Some of the phrases like "thief a la mode" used in the film may require a bit of culture to appreciate. While Ocean's teams do work together in the same fashion as the first film, the thievery itself doesn't take the spotlight in the film. "Ocean's Eleven" was the traditional heist film in its plot development with its climax at the point of executing the plan. Ocean's Twelve breaks away from this formula in favor of developing opportunities for some great character interaction.

The film disappoints with many characters taking a back seat in their roles to such an extent that the film could have been named after Pitt's character, with the Benedict aftermath merely serving as a catalyst for the characters finding their way back together. However, it would have been unreasonable for all eleven original characters to share an equal share of the spotlight and still turn out as well. The story is more about Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta-Jones than George Clooney and Julia Roberts. The rest of the cast perform very well and the guest-star appearances, including an unforgettable one by Bruce Willis, are hysterical. Half of the time I was unsure if the actors were even acting!! It appeared as if they were not even looking at the script, and instead talking amongst themselves like, "Hey, so how you've been?". "Oh, I `v been good, the kids at home are taking up a lot of my time, ya know". Come on now, really.

In the end, "Ocean's Twelve" is not a mere heist film but an Intelligent Comedy that may need to be watched more than once to appreciate some of the subtleties in the dialog. Just the amount of activity on this film's message board regarding some of the subtleties in the plot is a testament to the thought that went into making this film. Will "Ocean 13" rectify this, well I would have to go see it for myself.

The Italian Job is an awesome movie! It's action-packed & is very clever. I had a copy of the movie, but the disc got scratched, so I bought another copy to replace it. It's one of the few movies you won't get tired of watching, even though you already know what's going to happen.

I love this movie, I had it on DVD and I got it on HD DVD recently. My only gripe is the quality of the video transfer. There is a lot of graining and artifact noise, especially on dark scenes. The blacks on the DVD version look better than the HD DVD version's blacks...

Good Cast-Good Movie, BRING ON THE SEQUEL!.......2007-06-15

The Italian Job brings to the screen the story of a group of thieves bent on revenge on one of their own who betrayed them by murdering their leader and running off with the gold.
Mark Wahlberg, Donald Sunderland, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron, Seth Green, and the rest of this AMAZING cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are commendable to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few thrills, not to mention a few laughs.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the humor, and the music are all wonderful!
In short, The Italian Job is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

The Italian Review.......2007-06-03

I live right around the corner from a Mini Coop dealership and I'm an Italian-American, so I thought it fitting that I finally rented this movie. It's a remake of the 1969 original starring Michael Caine. Whereas that film took place in Italy, the remake stays there only for the introduction and then swiftly moves to California.

I love heist films. Like Ocean's Eleven or Heat, it's all about the cast. You can see a pattern in the characters:

THE WHEELMAN: This is the guy who mans the getaway vehicle, be it helicopter, jet, or car. Handsome Rob (Jason Statham, my favorite action hero) plays a decidedly scrappy, suave wheelman. This also happens to be almost the exact character from The Transporter. Hopefully, Statham will move beyond this type of character, but it's a testament to action tropes that he can actually be typecast as "the wheelman."

THE TECH: This guy is almost always a nerd and usually the comic relief. Lyle (Seth Green) nails this role and actually steals the show with his jokes. One ad-libbed sequence of Lyle mocking Handsome Rob is the funniest part of the movie. Of course, the challenge with this sort of character is that he needs to be able to pull off seemingly magical feats of technological wizardry without overshadowing the expertise involved. When Lyle manages to take control of the entire traffic system, you really have to wonder if he couldn't be better off striking out on his own. He's almost too good for the movie.

THE DEMOLITIONIST: The demolitionist's job is to blow things up. Sometimes he's a homicidal maniac, other times he's cool and collected. Left Ear (Mos Def) is a cool customer. And he doesn't like dogs. He gives Lyle competition for the funniest line in the movie:

Left Ear: This dude got dogs. I don't do dogs... I had a real bad experience, man.
Charlie Croker: What happened?
Left Ear: I had. A bad. Experience.

THE OLD MAN: You've seen this guy before. He's probably the former leader of the group. He's seen too much, been around the block too many times, and he knows his days are numbered. He just wants one last, big heist so he can retire forever. He almost always dies in the film. That pretty much sums up John Bridger (Donald Sutherland).

THE HOT CHICK: A recent invention, the hot chick's purpose is to keep men interested. She can have a variety of roles (tech, wheel-err-woman, demolitionist). Sometimes she has her own unique set of skills as safecracker. That's John's daughter, Stella (Charlize Theron), who competes admirably in the sea of testosterone.

THE LEADER: Handsome, smart, a safecracker himself, this guy is the one who pulls off a sneaky job right under the bad guys' noses. Unfortunately, Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg) is more narrator than anything else. He seems to have very little to do, and that's a shame, because Wahlberg's talented enough to do much more.

The villain is Steve (Edward Norton) a thief turned bad. He knows all of our protagonists' tricks, so he knows how to counter them. And since he stole the gold from the original Italian Job, he's the perfect foil. Norton plays him with just the right amount of shifty-eyed sleaze.

The Italian Job has lots of cool car chases, lots of near misses, and a lot of twists and turns (literally and figuratively) that make it a brisk, entertaining movie. You get quickly caught up in the machinations of the characters, which allows the film to get away with a lot of unbelievable nonsense. But who cares? From the funky flashbacks to the quippy asides, it's clear that Italian Job doesn't take itself too seriously.

Although it's more Job than Italian, the Italian Job is still a fun ride.

For the Hollywood remake rule, which dictates that an update of an older film be inferior to the original in almost every aspect, The Thomas Crown Affair stands as a glorious exception. The film, however, pretty much belongs to Russo, who doesn't just steal the spotlight, but bends it to her will. This is a very good remake. Pierce Brosnan is more dashing than cool but Rene Russo is just plain hot! My wife says they used body doubles for the wild sex scenes - Horay for stunt men! The guy playing Catherine Banning must have shaved his legs.

The biggest difference between the original and the remake is the psychological make-up of the principal characters. Neither Brosnan nor Russo play antisocial characters as did McQueen and Dunaway. In the remake, Crown is just a rich guy who is bored and likes art. Russo's character displays the ethics and good judgement you would attribute to a successful insurance investigator in real life. Brosnan and Russo portrayed the believable characters of a love story. Thomas Crown II has a feel good ending and reinforces most of what we are looking for in our own lives; with just a little bit more flair!

BUY THE MOVIE - watch it with you sweetie and eat a warm snack, like popcorn. You're gonna have a good time!

It's not often that a remake is better than an original, but since the original sucked fairly significantly, almost anything would end up being better. This one is spicy, funny and has some WICKED music (and I'm not particularly a music lover).

Premise: insurance adjuster (hot chick) comes into town to investigate the theft of a famous painting. She meets and falls in love with the billionaire theif, and then has to cope with betraying her job or her heart...

This movie has one of the best and most memorable scenes I've ever watched; the bit at the end where it all "comes clean in the wash".... funny as, and brilliant. I grin like an idiot every time.

An Enduring Story... Becuase It's Real.......2007-07-13

There are plenty of Thomas Crowns in the world; maybe not all as rich as the title character, but just as clever at the "game of life" - and lonely - as a consequence of their insight and talents.

This film does an excellent job of highlighting the frustrations of "self made men" when it comes to finding trust, happiness, and expressing themselves to women, and society at large.

Anyone who knows the feeling of being "alone in a crowded room" will find this movie to be a beacon that there is hope out there.

This remake of a Steve Mc Queen movie is much better than the original and it took some convincing for me to even look at this film, but once I did, wow! Pierce is by far my favorite Bond and his character is an action packed one as well. He plays the perfect man--suave and debonair. His antics as a billionaire playboy are entertaining! The love scene with Rene Russo was so hot, you have to control yourself. This movie has it all--action, comedy and pure entertainment. You never get bored with it. A great buy.

This movie is OK, but I prefer the original version with Steve McQueen. This remake is too Hollywood for me, with too many unbelievable stunts. The original was better.

Another great 70's muscle car movie........2007-07-15

I remember seeing this movie on the big screen at the cinema, I was 13. This is a fun movie if you don't take it too serious, just have fun with it. Although the younger crowd of today might not get it, because of it's heavy use of 70's terms. Lots of bell bottoms and no one wears seat belts in those days...even the cops. As someone mention..Larry didn't come off as "crazy" enough as he could have but still a good effort.
And of course the ending was a blast. If nothing else, the ending will stay with you the rest of your life. It did for me.

Loved the great "Real Time" high performance footage and legitimate sound effects. This little known flick is right up there with Bullitt and Vanishing Point as far as the action driving sequences go. I'm thrilled that it has finally been released on DVD. If you're a Mopar fan, it's a must have for your car chase collection.

Spike Lee scored his biggest hit to date with Inside Man, an unconventional thriller with fascinating details in the margins of its convoluted plot. Great Acting Highlights This Heist Flim.......2007-09-12

Here's a heist-negotiator story done with a few different angles. Among the "twists" are (1) a bank president who hires someone to try to get something NOT robbed out of his band during the heist, evidence that could destroy his status and career, and (2) the crooks all get away with the mastermind of group hiding in the bank for a week before slipping away in broad daylight. That last part leads me to ask a few questions about that could possibly happen, specifically how get could get out of the vault where he was hidden without all kinds of alarms going off, etc.

Nevertheless, credibility-aside, its an interesting two hours of entertainment, sort of a modern-day Dog Day Afternoon film. (In fact, DDA is mentioned in the movie.)

The four lead actors in this film are all quite diverse: a veteran cop (Denzel Washington), the main crook (Clive Owen), the bank president (Christopher Plummer) and the professional business woman he hires (Jodie Foster.) All of them are fascinating, thanks in large part to the fact they are all outstanding actors to begin with. Unlike most people, I particularly enjoyed Foster playing such a controlled, low-key character and the same could be said about another top actor in here: Willem DaFoe.

The more I think about it, the actors here are just as fascinating as the story, if not more so. I am sure it will be them, not the story, that drives me back for more viewings. One warning for families: there are lots of f-words in here.

Twisted and brilliant bank robbery movie..........2007-09-12

Bank robber Dalton (Owen) has taken over a Manhattan bank intending to commit a robbery. Detective Frazier (Washington) is the guy tasked with figuring out Russell's plan before the hostages start to die.
Inside Man's stock is raised by the presence of director Lee, who makes his most thrilling and enjoyable movie for some time. It's entertaining on almost every level.

Inside Man begins with what looks like a typical bank robbery. Four people dressed as painters hold up the bank. Enter Detective Frazier, a tough streetwise cop on his first negotiating job. Frazier matches wits with the clever bank robber, Dalton Russell. While Frazier and Russell have the ultimate battle of wits, a twist occurs when Madeline White a sassy aid to the elite class of New York, enters wanting to talk with Dalton for her own purposes. This movie is truly a roller coaster ride with high-speed twist after twist leading the viewer to an unbelievable finish.
Director Spike Lee rejoins Denzel Washington for the fourth pairing of the actor- director duo. Clive Owen as Dalton Russell and Jodie Foster as Madeline White also join the two. A strong supporting cast makes this a solid group for the film.
Spike Lee does a good job of developing each of the main characters in the story and allows the audience to view things from each person's angle. Denzel Washington's character shares personal and professional experience, which shows what motivates him to do his job.The movie, reveals just enough about him to leave viewers wanting more.
The most thrilling part of the movie has to be the plot development. It is done in such a way as to keep watchers guessing throughout the whole movie. Each emergence of a new plot twist is unexpected and keeps the action going. The use of the interrogation scenes while the movie still flows throws another twist into the movie because it makes the viewer unsure of what is going on. Lee does a good job of keeping viewers on their toes but not allowing viewers to get lost in all that is happening in the scenes.
Inside Man is a thrilling ride that does not have the typical cops versus robber storyline. This is no family friendly movie. It is rated R for the use of stronger curse words, and a few sexually suggestive conversations and scenes. While it is possible that this detracts from some moviegoer's experiences, the plot and the character development alone make Inside Man a movie to see.

Pretty slick.......2007-08-23

I love heist type films. This one kept my interest from the beginning. The end was pretty cool. The cast all did pretty nice jobs and for the most part seemed believable. I've seen it only once but definetly plan to watch it again sometime soon.

Intriguing.......2007-08-18

This is a very good variation on the classic heist movie. A top quality cast all give fine performances, resulting in an entertaining and intelligent film. This second quality is important, since we've all seen heist movies before, but this one adds something extra to proceedings by making the owner of the bank (the as always excellent Christopher Plummer) a leading player in film for reasons that only become obvious in the 2nd half of the film.

This is more mainstream, than most Spike Lee films but he still stamps his own vision on the film. We should also be grateful that Spike realises the futility of buildings and cars exploding. Perhaps hollywood will learn one day. It goes without saying that the direction is good and the script equally so. Denzel Washington shares the acting honours with Plummer, if only because Clive Owen is behind a mask most of the time.

I have only seen the film once, but can imagine that it will improve with a few more viewings. Recommended.

This is a great movie and I'm happy to see it on Blu-Ray, it just sucks how the studio chose to not release the new unrated cut that you can get now on DVD. Oh, wait... yeah the ol' double dip trick is coming. Be patient and wait for the better version to be released...or get it now on DVD and save some money in the process.

Great movie but not the best Blu Ray quality........2007-02-09

I have had the chance to watch several movies in BluRay and HD DVD. This movie stays to it's wonderful action and great story. Although if you are looking for a movie with an excellent picture this one is not it. Not having this movie on DVD helped make the purchase easier. I have always enjoyed the intense action and the excellent acting which don't always go together. Overall that is what makes this an excellent fun film to watch.

Now on the Blu Ray scale. In many Blu Ray movies you either get two things. A picture that is almost crystal clear with no distortion or a movie with grainy hd picture. I was disappointed when I made this my first blu ray movie. I almost began to think that this was a blu ray standard. Although after watching other movies I know better. I don't believe they spent as much time as they should have transferring this movie over to hd. That is generally the problem with some movies. And for the price of Blu Ray players and the Blue Ray Discs you should only have the best picture. So I only consider this a worthwhile investment for people who have either never seen the movie or have not bought the dvd version.

YES I KNOW MY OPION OF THIS MOVIE BEING GOOD ISN'T FELT ALL AROUND. IT WAS A PRETTY GOOD HIT BACK IN 2000 WHEN IT CAME OUT AND I WATCHED THE DVD PROBABLY 10 TIMES. THE BLU-RAY VERSION WAS EYE POPPING! THE VISUALS WERE CLEAR AND CRISP. I THOUGHT THE MOVIE VISUALLY WAS GREAT SOUND WAS OK NOT REALLY A BIG UPGRADE. THE COLORS WERE BRIGHT, BOLD, AND DETAILED EVEN DURING THE CHASE AS WELL. IF YOUR A FAN OF THE MOVIE AND HAVE A BLU-RAY PLAYER OF A PS3 THEN UPRGRADE. THE MOVIES ARE STILL A LITTLE PRICEY FOR BLU-RAY BUT THIS IS ONE TI9TLE THATS WORTH IT!!

This tongue-in-cheek 1970 variation on The Dirty Dozen looks less fresh than it did in the year of its release, but it still has some enjoyable moments. Clint Eastwood stars along with Donald Sutherland, Harry Dean Stanton, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, and Gavin MacLeod in the story of American soldiers who try to steal gold behind enemy lines in World War II. Sutherland's hippie G.I. doesn't have the sardonic and timely appeal he did during the Vietnam War, but the film's irreverence and several of the performances are worth a visit. --Tom Keogh

Others (many others) have described why this movie is a keeper, so here's my 2 cents. Sutherland's stoned tank commander, O'Connor's glory-hound general, Rickles' wheeler-dealer: the major and minor characters that could be and were thrown together in war, combined with the very real situations they encounter, make this film believable - sceptics not withstanding - and more than just a major war commedy. It has enough of a 'ring of truth' about it I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn some day that it DID happen...

I first saw this movie when I was a kid and was just a WWII buff. I can honestly say, though, that since then I will make a point to watch it whenever I see it. While it is not high art by any stretch, it is an eminently watchable movie that is well paced and has iconic characters you'll remember well after you see the movie (who could forget Oddball). In fact, I'm going to go watch it right now...

THE WILD BUNCH (1969) In 1913 at the height of the Mexican Revolution an aging band of outlaws from the last century known as "The Wild Bunch", to fund their retirement decide on a last robbery on a dusty Texas town. Unbeknown to gang leader Pike Bishop (William Holden) and his right-hand-man Dutch Engstrom (Ernest Borgnine) a rival and former gang member and friend Deke Thornton (Robert Ryan) has the bank staked out, ambushing the gang as they try to make their escape after a most violent shootout the survivors head for relative safety across the Mexican border, with Thornton and his posse of roughneck bounty hunters in hot pursuit.

Once across the border the gang the gang head for a small Mexican border town where Freddie Sykes (Edmund O'Brien) is waiting for them with spare horses and saddles, here they discover that their loot from the robbery is made up of worthless steel washers. They then head for the Mexican village home of Angel (Jaime Sanchez) one of the gang members. Bishop learnt from the village elder that General Mapache (Emilio Fernandez) and his troops had attacked the village.

In an effort to restore their fortunes Pike Bishop and his men head for the headquarters of General Mapache (Emilio Fernandez) to sell their horses,
No sooner have they arrived, than Angel spotted his girl friend Teresa in the arms of Mapache, he draws his gun and shoots her dead, when things have cooled down General Mapache and his German advisors hire the gang to hijack a US arms shipment for a price of $10,000 in gold. Angel insists to Pike and Dutch that he's allowed to take one case to his village for their defence, they both agree.

The gang hold up the train only to discover that Deke and his posse our also on board the train. Following the successful hijack of the arms shipment they head back over the Rio Grande via a bridge, which they dynamite just as the posse, is crossing over. The posse was also being followed by a "green" US cavalry troop who had been acting as train guard. After a successful getaway, Pike, suspecting foul play arranges for arms to be delivered to General Mapache in stages delivering the first one his-self in exchange for part payment in gold!

By the time Dutch and Angel ride in for the final exchange big trouble is brewing not least because Mapache knows of Angel's double-dealing and takes him prisoner, Dutch pretends he doesn't care and is allowed to walk away. Back with the rest of the gang Pike decides to try and buy Angel back from Mapche with half of his share of the gold. Meanwhile Deke and his posse are breathing down their necks indeed Sykes has already been seriously wounded in the thigh!

Pike, Dutch and the two Gorch brothers (Warren Oates & Ben Johnson) set out for General Mapache's stronghold, on arrival they find a fireworks celebration in progress along with drunken debauchery, Mapache's car is driving around with Angel tied and dragged along behind the car with children running happily along behind! Pike demands that Mapache lets Angel go. He refuses, Pike and the gang retreat and take solace in local prostitutes, apart from Dutch who waits outside whittling on a piece of wood. Having had their fill of whiskey and women Pike rallies the Wild Bunch and they walk out four abreast into the sunshine heading across town. On arrival he demands of Mapache that he releases the moribund Angel, the General refuses at the same time cutting Angel's throat, which precipitates the last violent shootout. At the end of it all only two survive the adventure of crossing of the River Grande into Mexico, one of the hunted (The Wild Bunch) and one of the hunters (The Posse), but which ones?

Sam Pekinpah had already made the critically acclaimed RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY aka GUNS IN THE AFTERNOON (1962) with those two Western stalwarts Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea. And although this film has a vastly expanded budget it still explores the same theme of men out of their time and place in the advancing twentieth Century! Brilliant Opening freeze-framed credits sequence to the sound of drums and cymbals as they ride past a group of Mexican children who are feeding live scorpions to a colony of red fighter ants. Several other set pieces are expertly handled most notable of which was the blowing up of the bridge over the River Grande The film was made midway through the Vietnam War and the American public by this time were used to scenes of violence on TV news reports. Many critics reported that the film merely reflected that violence. Still not to every ones taste then, or now!

A Great Guy Flick!.......2007-08-03

One of the featured Amazon reviews, by a fellow named Wilson, alleges that after viewing this movie, "it is the quiet moments one remembers"...I DON'T THINK SO!!!

For me - and I'm sure for most people - it is the ultraviolent beginning and ending that make the film. What happens in between is less interesting.

William Holden plays Pike, the aging leader of a gang of outlaws. As the film opens, they are attempting to rob a train station that, they think, is receiving a large shipment of gold. They are being set up, however, and the station is surrounded by a motley crew of bounty hunters. A wild bloodbath ensues and the surviving gang members are chased into Mexico, where they hope to regroup.

Pike knows that his best days are behind him and looks for one last great robbery to retire on. Having become entagled in a Mexican civil war, Pike and his men agree to rob a train-load of rifles on the United States side of the border for a Mexican General. The General has promised them a very large sum of cash in return.

Ultimately, as the film climaxes, Holden's character leads the last surviving members of the Wild Bunch into battle against the Mexican General and his entire army. It is one of the greatest film endings of all time, with Sam Peckinpaugh's trademark violence exploding all over the screen. I can think of lots of adjectives to describe the ending battle scenes, but, if I had to pick just one, it would be: EXHILARATING!

My wife and I started watching this movie together but, about a third of the way through, she left the room. You've heard of "chick flicks"? This is definitely a guy flick!

One Of The Top Four Westerns.......2007-07-12

The Wild Bunch is in the top four westerns of all time, the first being High Noon, the second being Shane, and then The Wild Bunch and last being Silverado. All four had a positive message in each of them even though The Wild Bunch had the most violence. I saw this movie when it first came out and being in my late teens early twenties it had a major impact on me it was just before going into the service with the war raging in Vietnam and the protests going on here in the United States, my generation never saw that kind of violence while we were growing up the actors got shot at and just fell down there was never any blood or bullet holes in the bad guy.
The message that I took from this movie and I still live by it today is best summed up by Pike and that is you do what is right no matter what, and you stick by your friends to the end.
Sadly in this day and age the younger generations that have followed don't it is all about them and what is in it for them.
The DVD looked great and there were a couple of scenes put back in that you don't see on TV.

Bloody eye candy.......2007-07-03

This bloody extravaganza made Sam Peckinpah's reputation. A kind of fantasy of machismo set along the Texas-Mexico border around 1913--yes, very late for a Western--The Wild Bunch has thrilled adolescent boys and twentysomethings for almost four decades. The slowmo shots of horses falling awkwardly, of bodies squirting blood as they fall off of roof tops or cliffs, of tough hombres talking tough while they grab loose women and bottles of booze replete with numerous other bits of acrobatic mayhem amid some fantastic scenery makes this a non-cerebral feast for the eyes. The stars, William Holden (Pike Bishop), Ernest Borgnine (Dutch Engstrom), Robert Ryan (Deke Thornton), Edmund O'Brien (Freddie Sykes), etc. are first rate and on form. The plot is a variant of the old "one last job" story which begins with Pike's not-quite over-the-hill gang doing one last bank robbery.

Needless to say something goes wrong. Interspersed between the opening credits we see Pike's gang ride into town dressed as members of the US Army Calvary. On roof tops are some rascals and scallywags with rifles, missing teeth, and murderous gleams in their eyes. They are led by Deke Thornton, who it turns out is working for the railroad. What follows is a good old fashioned shoot 'em up of rather unlikely proportions as Pike's gang exists the bank with bags of loot, dodging and slinging bullets with abandon.

Turns out...well, no I won't say because I don't want to spoil the surprise. Suffice it to say, they need to do another job, this one a good old-fashioned train robbery with a few tricks and extras, like blowing up a bridge and running a locomotive at full throttle backwards. And then across the border into Mexico and some fun and games with Mexican generals, senoritas, banditos and such.

Been there, done that. But Peckinpah's colorful yarn has a few things you might not have seen before, and some of those things that you have seen, he did first and better. The Mexican color with a lot of authentic-looking extras doing authentic-looking Mexican activities was good. The fact that the Spanish spoken was not translated (and didn't need to be translated) was good. General Mapache (Emilio Fernandez) as the drunken, power-hungry warlord bandito was good. The kids feeding scorpions to the ants and then burning them was good. Edmund O'Brien as a degenerate Gabby Hayes kind of character was a hoot and a holler. But mostly this was about grim-faced men, toughened by long hours in saddle under the hot sun who, after decades of outlawing, finally ride gloriously into that last battle. Next stop: boot hill.

I watched the "original director's cut" that runs 145 minutes. At no time was my brain involved, but my eyes couldn't stop watching.
