Yoga for a Strong and Healthy Back presents the fundamentals of posturing and breathing in this approachable 40-minute workout that includes two 20-minute sessions focusing on spinal rotation and muscular strength. The back is central to supporting all movements; conventional workouts often do not include exercises that strengthen the lower back. Yoga Zone gives excellent instruction here, and participants are taught poses that utilize both the lower and upper back. The warrior pose and forward bends are just a few of the postures performed here that can improve spinal flexibility and help to avoid future back injuries. Beginners should find the first set easy to follow (the postures within this section are modified versions of what is yet to come). The second set incorporates some back bends and deeper poses that require greater agility and strength. Despite the increased difficulty here, participants of all levels can improve their flexibility without being overwhelmed by impossible poses. Filmed in Jamaica, the content in this progressive workout is surpassed only by the white-sand beaches in the background. This regimen includes great information, cuing, and scenery--not to mention how relaxed you can feel after an intensive yoga experience like this. --Olivia Voigts

2 out of 5 stars Strong back? I don't think so..........2007-08-05

Misleading title...If you suffer low back pain and need help strengthening those muscles this is NOT the dvd for you. If you have problems rotating at the mid back or suffer muscle spasms in the lat area this will cause problems as it did for me. If you want an upper/mid back mild stretch then by all means buy it because it is definately good for that. If you need to gain strength in the core to aleviate low back pain NOT due to injury but due to inactivity then I would suggest Back In Action Total Fitness For Your Core by Jon Mello. This will give you the exercise foundation you need.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-04-10

I have a L5 herniation in my back along with desiccation of the disc. Needless to say I was looking for some relief after continual "back attacks". I got myself an inversion table an after 1 month about 80% of the pain was gone. Looking for the final 20% eventually led me to Yoga

Reading the reviews on Yoga Zone convinced me that this was the best one for lower back pain. Never having done Yoga I was a bit nervous after reading about all of the difficulty and soreness that many were experiencing.

To my surprise I found this not to be the case. In fact I believe the exercises are a bit too easy and don't target the back as much as I had hoped. In my experience exercises such as the superman pose and other stretches seem to do a better job for me. Having said that perhaps your experience will be different as every back ailment IS different.

The video itself is topshelf in terms of production with gorgeous scenery and pleasant instructors. More importantly it focuses on the task at hand and spares us new age hokum.

5 out of 5 stars Really good video.......2007-03-12

After too many strenuous days of skiing, I got hit by lower back spasms, which shocked me because I thought I was in fairly good shape. I go to the gym and work with weights, I ski in winter, bike in summer. I do frequent stretch routines. So my sudden back problem threw me for a loop! My chriopractor helped, and as it turned out, he's very into Yoga and suggested some yoga poses which helped a lot. This led me to search for yoga DVD's that are back specific and I figured at this point in my life (I'm 57), Yoga might be a good addition to the mix of exercise. Since there weren't many back specific DVDs, I got this one and found that I like it a lot. The two sessions are only 20 min. each, which allows me to sneak in a session here and there whereas a longer, more involved program would be less easy to make routine. None of the exercises were extreme for a beginner, and were done with 2 people, one of which would often point out things and modifications on the other one as the pose was being done. Directions were easy and clear....after watching this a couple of times I think you would then remember and be able to follow directions without keeping an eye on the TV constantly. After the pose was explained, comments on how you could modify the pose to be easier were given. Douglas, on the 2nd session, has a very clear, calming voice and his explanations and comments were very good and to the point, very useful and clarifying.

The Jamaica ocean beach setting on the 2nd session was especially wonderful, and I could almost imagine myself there doing yoga on the beach as well. I found the whole DVD was low key and quite relaxing. Oddly, I don't recall a thing about the music...so I'd say at least it wasn't distracting. Maybe I was enjoying the beach scene too much to notice the music.

The key with this or any other such DVD is to be regular with it and give it a chance to work. And if you are new to Yoga, follow the instructor comments about how to do the various poses. As I said, none of them are anything that requires expertise or a high level of fitness or yoga experience, but that certainly doesn't mean they don't have an effect. The harder ones can easily be modified in the beginning as necessary.

One thing many people complain about is that yoga DVDs are often slow and boring. I used to think that too, but now I'm finding this slow pace quite relaxing and enjoyable. I plan to take a little trip to the Jamaica beach and do this DVD every day and I'll report back about how successful it is in rehabbing my back. So far so good.

5 out of 5 stars I Love the Yoga Zone.......2007-02-22

This dvd is great for someone who doesnt have 1 full hour to do yoga, it has two 15 minute sessions and since I have been doing it, my back pain has been greatly relieved! Easy to do poses and great for someone with chronic back pain.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but short.......2007-02-19

The pace and poses are good with a level of effort ranging from beginner to intermediate. However, the DVD is short on content. There are only two sessions (about 20min each) and there should be at least four. Unfortunately, there seems to be no other DVDs targeting the lower back, so by default, this is the best shot.

5 out of 5 stars Fischer-Dieskau's signature work preserved on video.......2007-01-12

Whatever one might think of the way he sings a specific work or another, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is one of the giants of twentieth-century singing. Schubert's Winterreise has played a central role in his long career (it was one of the earliest works he sang in public, in a recital interrupted by an air raid) and he has documented his thoughts on the song cycle many times, both in audio recordings and on video.

This DVD contains a performance with the Austrian pianist Alfred Brendel taped in 1979 for German television, recorded as if in a concert situation, though without an audience. One appreciates the straightforward visuals, in particular the lack of distracting fades and cutting that so often mars films of classical performances. Fischer-Dieskau was in his fifties at the time and already had been before the public for more than three decades. If one compares his performance here to his 1963 EMI recording with Gerald Moore, there is an inevitable loss of vocal plushness and moments of uncertain intonation. These are to a great extent compensated, though not totally, by the singer's assured delivery of the text and dramatic commitment. Fischer-Dieskau is remarkably restrained physically, barely moving most of the time except for his face, which is a marvel of expressiveness. Some of the most telling moments, such as in the final song, "Der Leiermann," are accomplished solely with his eyes and voice. This is great lieder, as opposed to opera, singing. Brendel of course is a master in his own right, and adds much insight through his sharply pointed, though not sensual, sound. This is not a performance for any listener who must have continuous beauty of melody and tone; but for anyone who wishes to get to the heart of "Winterreise" seeing and hearing these two artists at work is a revelation.

The DVD also includes a filmed one-hour rehearsal, which though interesting is lessened in value because of the lack of subtitles (the performance itself is subtitled in several languages). The accompanying booklet cites the rapidity of the two men's conversation and lack of intelligibility as the reason, but surely some of the dialogue could have been translated or summarized. Nevertheless, this is a most rewarding classical music DVD.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Immortals Of Voice At His Best!.......2005-11-21

There are many, including me, who feel that Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau Is the finest singer of lieder who ever lived and this is one of his finest performances. As he matured as an artist he became more expressive and intricate in his singing. In this performance we see him in top form. Alfred Brendel also gives a top notch interpretation. You might wonder if it is useful to see this performance or just listen to a cd. It is interesting to note that Konstantin Stanislavsky, the father of modern acting technique, once commented that the finest actors that he had ever seen were the opera singers! Well, just as we would want to see a great performance of Hamlet and not just hear it, to see Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau emote his way through this is incomparable. What a fantastic actor he is! He maintains great intensity throughout this entire performance. Schubert's Winterriese deals with one of the most painful of human experiences: unrequited love and contemplation of suicide. This highly charged topic gives the artist a great deal to work with.
There is a bonus on this dvd where we get to experience the two of them rehearsing. They speak very quickly and it is difficult to catch what they are saying, so we don't get any subtitles, but fortunately, they communicate quite a bit in musical terms, singing how they want each phrase to be performed and this is very interesting and instructive.
There is another 1991 video of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing Winterreise with Murray Perahia at the piano on vhs, which I own, but I perfer this 1979 performance. Even Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau himself has said that he never sings a piece the same way twice, so we're entitled to pick and choose, aren't we?
If you are interested in looking further into Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, he currently has a few other dvds you might explore as well and his immense discography. In addition, I recommend two of his books--an auto-biography and an analysis of Schubert's lieder.

5 out of 5 stars Incomparable!.......2005-11-18

If there is any music with which Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is more identified than 'Winterreise,' I don't know what it is. He sang it for the first time in public before he was even eighteen! (And that performance was interrupted by an air raid warning!) He recorded it many times; with ingenuity one can ferret out more than twenty recordings he made of the song cycle. Most of those were recorded off the air or recorded on the sly during a recital, but most have been in wide circulation. Of course, he also made commercial recordings, most notably with his long-time accompanist, Gerald Moore, and with the subtle accompanist, Jörg Demus. The latter recording, made in 1966, is my favorite of the studio-recorded versions I've heard. But we have, as far as I know, only one video recording of him doing 'Winterreise' and that's this one, in very clear and rich stereo, recorded in January 1979 when he was 53 years old. His accompanist is one of the greatest pianists alive then or now, Alfred Brendel. And the recording of this performance, shot at the Siemensvilla, Berlin, is simply magnificent. FiDi is in ravishing voice and Brendel is an incredibly sensitive but in no way deferential accompanist. This is a true partnership of equals.

What can one say about this performance? All the virtues are there, and as far as I can tell, no quibbles arise about the performance. Brendel is a fabulous accompanist. He and FiDi had performed the cycle several times before, and yet this is as fresh a performance as one could imagine. [There is, by the way, an hour-long bonus on this DVD of FiDi and Brendel rehearsing for this performance. Their conversation is, naturally, in German and unfortunately there are no subtitles for those who don't understand the language. Still, one can learn from how they work together, especially when they demonstrate -- Brendel in his croaky pianist's voice -- various points in their interpretation. There is a note in the booklet apologizing for there being no subtitles for the rehearsal film but 'it was virtually impossible to understand what was said in several places, thereby rendering any meaningful translation impracticable.' What about those many passages where the spoken German is perfectly understandable? Ah, well.]

As always, when hearing Fischer-Dieskau sing 'Winterreise,' I was reduced to tears by the time we got to 'Der Leiermann.' This time, as early as 'Das Wirtshaus' my eyes began to leak.

Fischer-Dieskau has just celebrated his 80th birthday. What more wonderful event, then, than for this video of 'Winterreise' to be released in the current medium of choice, DVD. Happy Birthday, FiDi!

If you love Fischer-Dieskau's Schubert, you must own this DVD.

Description

The documentary tells the true story of Kurt Gerron, a successful German-Jewish actor and director, who after being sent to a concentration camp, was forced by his captors to direct the pro-Nazi propaganda film, "The Fuhrer Gives a City to the Jews." In addition to exploring his life, it details the remarkable detective story in which Gerron's film, lost for decades after World War II, was tracked down and painstakingly put back together.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The story of Kurt Gerron as one who did not get away.......2005-04-28

"Prisoner of Paradise" is an Academy Award-nominated documentary that tells the story of Kurt Gerron. A beloved and well-known German-Jewish actor, director, and cabaret star in Berlin in the 1920s he is most remembered for co-starring with Marlene Dietrich in the classic film "The Blue Angel." He also appeared opposite Peter Lorre in "Bombs Over Monte Carlo" and sang "Mack the Knife" in the original production of "The Threepenny Opera." But footage of Gerron to present the idea of the archetypal Jew in early propaganda films such as "The Eternal Jew." The reason Gerron is the subject of this PBS documentary is because of the last creative effort of his life. It was Gerron who directed the Nazi propaganda film made about the Theresienstadt concentration camp, which was known as "The Model Ghetto."

Theresienstadt was the German name for Terezín, the name of a former military fortress and garrison town in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic. During World War I the fortress was used as a prisoner of war camp and Gavrilo Princip, who started the war by assassinating Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria and his wife, died of there in 1918. The Gestapo took over the fortress in 1940 and the following year was turned by Reinhard Heydrich, the head of the SS, into an internment camp for local Jews. By the summer of 1942 that population had been exterminated and the site was a closed environment for privileged Jews from Germany, Czechoslovakia and Austria.

When the Nazis permitted a visit by the Red Cross to counter rumors about the extermination camps, thousands of Jews were deported to Auschwitz to avoid the appearance of overcrowding in Theresienstadt. Fake shops and cafes were built to make it seems the Jews were living in relative comfort. There was even the performance of a children's opera, "Brundibar." The hoax was such a success the Nazis decided to make a propaganda film at Theresienstadt and shooting began in February 1944 with Gerron as director. When the filming was done most of the "cast" were transported to Auschwitz. Gerron and his wife were executed in the gas chambers on October 28, 1944. However, the film he made (Often called "The Führer Gives a Village to the Jews" but was actually entitled "Theresienstadt. Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem jüdischen Siedlungsgebiet"), was never released although edited pieces were used for propaganda purposes, which is why only segments of it remain today.

Narrated by Ian Holm, "Prisoner of Paradise" explains how Gerron, unlike Fritz Lang, Billy Wilder and other German-Jews in the motion picutre industry, did not get out of Europe. When Jews were no longer allowed to work in Germany, Gerron fled first to Paris and then Amsterdam, which became the last refuge for Jewish artists. There were opportunities for Gerron to go to the United States to work in Hollywood, but he passed them by and when he was desperate for an offer his letters went unanswered. But he ended up in Theresienstadt. This documentary by Malcolm Clarke and Stuart Sender combines film footage from Gerron's movie career along with still photographs from his life, footage shot by the Nazis in Theresienstadt and elsewhere, contemporary footage of places such as Theresienstadt, and interviews with people who knew Gerron throughout the period being covered, such as the young girl who remembers him from happy days at a resort.

The documentary begins with Holm describing a utopian community of artists, which, of course, turns out to be the Theresienstadt of Gerron's film. The most poignant moment comes when we hear Gerron sing "Mack the Knife" while one of his old suits is displayed surrounded by candelabras and studio lights on the Marlene Dietrich stage at Babelsberg Film Studios. The most ironic comes when film of Gerron doing a magic trick is superimposed with images of transport trains heading for the death camps. However, the most horrifying artifact in the documentary is that of a map that the Nazis used for the "impromptu" tour of the ghetto taken by the Danish Red Cross inspectors. Every stopped was planned, timed and choreographed just like it was just one long tracking shot for a movie.

The Red Cross inspector, who is interviewed on film, had asked the commandant to keep the choir together they heard singing together. You will not be surprised as to how that particular story ends. But the point of "Prisoner of Paradise" is not to surprise you with new information about this particular aspect of the Holocaust. Remembering Gerron's story because his face and name are preserved on film also allows the nameless faces of his final film and all those whose lives were used as photographic lies for their own deaths to be remembered as well.

All actors have to try a mental-impairment role at some point in their careers (don't they?), and Mel Gibson took his best shot with this sweet film about a young retarded man and his gentle relationship with an older woman (Piper Laurie) who teaches him to read and to adjust to the real world. Tim's parents come to trust the woman's honorable intentions, but the movie still gives Mel's female fans a lot to swoon over; it's a platonic romance with plenty of temptation that's never acted upon. Add to that the fact that Gibson's really quite good in the title role--after Mad Max, this was Mel's first widely seen opportunity to prove himself in a dramatic role before his higher-profile roles in The Road Warrior and Gallipoli. Tim is a bit too schmaltzy and sentimental, but this 1979 release has gained a loyal audience over the years, and the film has a lot more than just a young Mel Gibson to recommend it. --Jeff Shannon

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars miami.......2004-01-24

Mel Gibson in one of his earliest movies (when he was about 25) plays a rather sweet (hey let's face it: hunky) and slightly retarded young gardener who likes his middle aged female employer played by Piper Laurie who really, really likes him, but in a rather restrained lustfulness: barging into his room at night all she does is gaze at him sleeping before stealing away.
His sister is appalled at this gender bending May -December romance (she wants to marry into a prominent local family and fears it might jeopardize her upcoming nuptials).
His employer (the middle aged woman) is so appalled she seeks pastoral counseling : young men older women romances were taboo 25 years ago! And she is racked with guilt. Surprisingly, her pastor is in favor so long as she marries Mel (lustfulness in marriage is ok!).
Also, Mel's parents are in favor: they are old and worried about who will care for their mentally retarded son after they die, so having him quietly married off would be best for their son.
There is a very charming scene of Mel and Laurie cavorting on the beach, tumbling down the dunes, she wearing a full body-covering caftan and big floppy hat, and he in the cutest of cut-off swim trunks looking as cute as a young and still inexperienced actor can manage.
It's embarrassing to watch at times , but my mother, aged 80+, really liked it.
So, more power to female audience oriented soft-core porn!

3 out of 5 stars Could you feel more awkward?.......2003-01-15

I enjoy watching Mel Gibson, even enough to watch this movie. I can appreciate how far he has come in his career. I just felt a little weird watching him as a "slow" boy working for, and eventually getting "involved" with an older woman. But, what can you say... it's Mel Gibson and hey, all actors started somewhere! : )

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Poignant.......2002-10-22

Having read the book, I can see why Gibson was chosen for the role. Tim is described as someone with features that would have inspired Praxiteles.-Classic and beautiful in Greek purportions. Despite the lack of blond hair that Colleen McCoullough ascribed her mentally diminished hero, Gibson gives him the vulnerabilty and nobility that McCoullogh describes. Piper Laurie is marvelous as Tim's employer, caretaker, and eventual love interest. The Australian landscape was gorgeous(it reminds me of Hawaii, where I lived as a child). But I was glad this film spares us the full descriptions of how Tim was treated by his co-workers. This is a very sensitive, well-thought piece, and I guess I can overlook many inconsistancies with the book and just enjoy the beauty of it.

    5 out of 5 stars Tim.......2002-09-15

Tim is one of Mel Gibsons first works and his very best acting
    is shown in this movie.

4 out of 5 stars TIM IS TOPS..........2002-03-11

This is a gem of a film, starring the underrated Piper Laurie in the role of a well to do, but lonely, business woman, Mary Horton, who befriends a very nice, good looking day laborer, Tim Melville, earnestly played by a very young Mel Gibson. Tim happens to be a little simple. His family describes him as being "a few short of a full quid".

While he does work around her house, she gets to know him, as well as his working class family. As time goes on, a deep fondness that ripens into love develops between the two. He brings her out of her shell, and she teaches him to read and explains concepts that will enable him to function better in the world around him. Based upon Colleen McCollough's book of the same name, this is a very well acted film, with fine performances by the supporting cast, as well as the leads.

The quality of the DVD is bargain basement with no additional features. That is to be expected, as the price of this DVD is likewise bargain basement. One gets what one pays for. Moreover, the DVD picture is best described as grainy. This is unfortunate for such an excellent film. A better transfer from print to DVD should have been executed, as this film certainly merits it, as does the viewer.

1 out of 5 stars This is genuinely the worst film that ever made it to screen.......2004-12-30

This is an unbelievably awful piece of work. I only looked it up on the internet after a Christmas game of "what's the worst film you've ever seen?". It never even made it to the big screen in the UK, and makes no mark on the film guides.

I saw it in a cinema in The Middle East, where there was nothing better to do. Even though it was 7 years ago, I can still recall the pointlessly shallow evil of the baddies, the dreadfulness of the acting, terrible, terrible special effects, a plot that makes Police Academy 6 look like Fellini's 8 1/2, and the feeling of disbelief at yet another dip in the already-low quality of what was set before us.

It was so bad that it was a relief when someone's mobile rang as it gave us some decent dialogue to listen to. "The Sender" made me want to join a sect that would brainwash me into forgetting, or at least prevent any 20th Century influences from harming me. It is so bad that now, when I watch "Reservoir Dogs", it's not as good as it used to be. If Michael Madsen tried to cut off my ear, I'd let him if it meant I didn't have to listen to any more of his dialogue. I'd ask him to poke my eyes out while he was at it though.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite alien films..........2002-06-28

I enjoy watching this movie. I woke up at 4AM to tape this movie on Cinemax years ago. I just wish for a reasonably-priced VHS for sale or, even better, a Region 1 DVD release...

This movie may be a little cheesy at times, but I really enjoyed it. The special effects are great and (i believe that) the story is closer to fact, especially concerning the "sender" gene...

I'd recommend you buy this (if you can even find it)!

They agree to co-operate and continue in their new bodies. - Juan is an aggressive and loud-mouthed football coach; he is at a luxury hotel preparing his team for an important match in a few days time. Belinda is with a group of female singers, also at the hotel. They are completely different characters and take an instant dislike to one another. But in a swimming pool accident they collide, and, nearly dying they recover, but they have exchanged bodies! They are horrified to discover that they are in the wrong bodies, and getting together, they agree that the only way to survive is to co-operate and try to deceive the world into thinking that nothing has happened. But Belinda (in Juan's body) knows nothing about football, and the players just laugh. Juan (in Belinda's body) tries to give tips over a mobile phone. She also visits her fiance about the wedding, but of course the fiance only sees a male body, and there is a surprising moment. Belinda increasingly has second thoughts about the wedding. Juan's musical efforts are equally unsuccessful, but brought together in the stress of trying to survive the situation, Juan and Belinda find themselves increasingly attracted to one another ... and at least between themselves they don't have to pretend to be what they are not. Rob Lowe and James Coburn star in this interesting near miss of a thriller with a good idea behind it. Lowe plays William Conroy, who is in prison for killing a woman in a drunk-driving accident. We know he is an intellectual prisoner because we see him reading 1984 and thinking a whole bunch. One night when he's up thinking, Conroy hears a disturbance in a nearby cell. He has, of course, heard too much and soon he's out of prison and running for his life. James Coburn ostensibly plays a victim's rights advocate, but you don't really think he's just going to sit around doing that, do you? The crux of the plot is an interesting idea, but the movie as a whole doesn't quite come off--it keeps lurching into the world of ridiculous hunches and providential timing. There are a few good chase scenes, and some surprisingly lush cinematography; Cleveland looks absolutely gorgeous. --Ali Davis

3 out of 5 stars Repeation of "the Fugitive".......2007-05-22

Rob Lowe did great in the film and it has some similarity of the Fugitive when Tommy Lee Jones and Harrison chasing an escaped convict prisoner. But this movie is different and a little less budget film. However, it shows several climaxes and actions with guns, explosions. An action movie goers would enjoy this film.

        3 out of 5 stars ALMOST..........2005-05-18

PROXIMITY is almost a good movie, and even as it is, it kept me interested. But be warned: Rob Lowe is rather wooden as the lead, and he does some incredibly stupid things; the villains (all cops) also do incredibly stupid things. However, amidst all this stupidity, are some tight action scenes and some good suspense. The movie posits the question of justice for the victims' families. James Coburn plays an outwardly saintly man who offers resolution to the families of murder/manslaughter victims, which of course includes Lowe, who was responsible for the death of one of his students in a car accident in which he was drunk. Aside from ruining his marriage, it's also placed him in jail with more detestable killers, including David Flynn as a killer with no remorse or conscience, and who shamelessly chews up the scenery. Coburn's method of instilling justice is to have Flynn kill prisoners in the same prison housing Lowe. What's even worse is that the victims' families are paying large sums of money for Coburn to have this done. When Lowe finds out what's going on, Coburn marks him for death, but an ill-conceived attempt results in a van crash and Lowe getting freed to try and expose the culprits. The psychotic henchmen (Jonathan Banks, TC Carson) and the prison warden (Joe Santos) botch several attempts to catch Lowe, and Lowe uses a newspaper reporter (Scott Plate) to expose Coburn. A lot that goes on is ludicrous, but for a B movie thriller, director Scott Ziehl keeps the story moving and as a reviewer says, Cleveland has never looked lovelier. You could do worse.

        3 out of 5 stars Well..........2003-08-23

Okay, I'll be honest here. I bought this movie mostly because Rob Lowe is in it. Yet the plot is strange and it's rather disturbing to watch. They kept going from scene to scene rather quickly in my opinion, not allowing the plots to fully unfold.

This is possibly the worst movie I've ever seen. I take that back. It definitely is the worst movie I've ever seen. The good news is that I didn't pay a cent to see it. The whole movie was comprised of really bad acting. Rob Lowe must be hurting for money. The plot was beyond ridiculous. I feel sorry for anyone who was in this movie or had anything to do with it. It really stunk up the place.
