Jackie Chan has become a genre unto himself, and watching Police Story, you'll understand why. The plot is minimal: Chan is a hero cop involved in a raid that goes wrong. He's assigned to guard a witness, the kingpin's attractive female secretary (Brigitte Lin). For the rest of the film, Chan's protecting himself from the secretary, from the gangsters out to silence her, and from his own jealous girlfriend (Maggie Cheung). But watching Chan for plot is like watching porno for existential themes. While most modern action films steal cues from Westerns, Chan condenses those open mesas into the dense throngs of modern Hong Kong--and tosses in Buster Keaton slapstick. For example, when the opening raid goes haywire, there's an unbelievable car chase through the steep huddle of a hillside shantytown. That's through. No roads, just shacks. Flimsy shacks. As the film progresses, Chan scales a speeding bus using an umbrella, uses cow dung as an excuse to break into some Shaolin moonwalking, and transforms an urban shopping mall into a demented gymnasium (think clothes racks, escalators, and lots of plate glass displays). At least once, although after seeing it... once is never enough! So this is the action/martial arts hybrid movie that has set the gold standard for all the others to come. Many have tried to duplicate it and few have rarely even come close (even it's sequels pale in comparison). Jackie stars and directs masterfully pushing the limits of exciting camera work and of course action and stunts. There are plenty of scenes here worth mention but I think it's best to go in without any forewarning of whats to come. Dragon Dynasty has put out another great DVD (although the picture is a little grainy) with some fantastic bonus features. One of Jackie Chans finest moments and in a career full of them this is a can't miss.

it has lot of action never a dull minute. if u have missed seeing police story 1, u need to see it too.. police story 2 is an excellent choice for your jackie chan collection.his movies keep u on the edge of your seat.

Classic Jackie Chan.......2007-04-06

French film-maker Jean-Luc Godard once said that the best criticism of one film is to make another. Jackie Chan was so dissatisfied with his experience on the cop drama The Protector, his second staring lead in an American film that he decided to make his own Police Story under his underused vanity label Golden Ways Films Ltd. In Hong Kong, he would have much more control over script, stunt coordination and direction (he made sure he would direct this film) that if he was going to flounder it would be on his terms. The result of his efforts is one of my favorite action films as well as Jackie's personal favorite amongst his modern fare.

Jackie Chan plays Chan Ka Kui a model Hong Kong cop who gets involved in a police procedural code named Operation Boar Hunt to take down a triad led by Chu Tu (prolific director/actor Chor Yuen). This operation begins in a shanty town specifically built for the film. The detail is extraordinary in the design and like everything created for an action film it is short-lived. In one of the most awesome car chases I have ever witnessed on screen (up there with Bullitt and The Blue's Brother's mall scene) Chu Tu after being cornered by the police decide to drive through the hovels instead of being captured and Chan decides to chase after. The juxtaposition of having the camera in the vehicle and long shots in which stuntmen are scurrying to avoid being hit (several stuntmen were injured in this scene) are sagacious in displaying the maelstrom of destruction. That and it's pretty damn cool.

Most films would have given a respite after that tumultuous scene of car and house derby but as soon as Chan finishes the car chase he goes into foot mode while running after a double-decker bus that Chu Tu and a few of his cronies hijacked. In several of these scenes as he catches up to the bus he is literally hanging by an umbrella as he holds unto the outside of the bus trying to climb his way in while fighting people who do not want him aboard as well as dodging traffic as the bus speeds along. Two of the stuntmen got hurt at the end of this scene where Ka Kui forces the bus to stop and as they flew out of the top windows they were supposed to land on top of the car that was stopped in the middle of the road but the backward momentum of the brakes as the bus rocked backward after stopping made them undershoot the stunt and land on the road.

Police Story has a stronger storyline than most Chan movies to connect the action scenes. After the arrest of Chu Tu, Inspector Li sets up his secretary Selina Fong (Brigitte Lin Ching-Hsia) by letting her go free of all charges to try to pit her against her boss. Ka Kui is assigned to protect her (several scenes of this scenario were cut out of the film). This, of course, will interfere and cause problems with his girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk whose relationship with Jackie is underplayed though that would change in the sequel). Chan tries to trick Selina into trusting him by pretending to save the day when Mars attacks Selina in her apartment. What ultimately happens because of this is predictable as well as the cop working for the triad but these are mere trifles.

The comedy is underrated in this film. There is a great sequence in which Jackie is assigned to the Sha Tau Kok Police Station, a rural area in the north eastern corner of Hong Kong, after he completely messes up the prosecution of Chu Tu. He deftly tries to answer several phones and juggle several conversations at the same time while not being really successful in solving any of them. Like Project A, his influence by silent film comedians is shown in how he performs this skit with physical perfection. This scene is so sublime I cannot fathom why this was missing in older American prints. I also enjoyed a nice little scene where Jackie does this beautiful car-slide stunt by doing the ultimate parallel parking literary by sliding the car parallel into a spot barely bigger than the car.

Another highlight of this film is the final sequence named "glass story" by the stuntmen. It takes place in a mall where Jackie has cornered Chu Tu and his cronies. It is 10 minutes of excellent martial arts, stunts and action. Some of the highlights is some great fights by Jackie with clothes racks, Brigitte Lin doing her own fighting, Chan doing a great jump into moving stairs, lots and lots of broken glass and the famous multi-story slide down a pole. Jackie severely burnt his hands on his slide down, partially attributed to the wrong voltage being set on the lights attached to it and it is also mentioned on several web sites and his own autobiography that he injured his spine and hip on that drop. This is a bit doubtful because on a camera with an alternate angle from the floor (shown in certain deleted footage) shows him bouncing up after the fall and slugging a stuntman (and according to Fung Hak-On hurting him). If you have ever had a back injury (I have several times) you usually do not do get up after it happens or beat up your stuntmen.

This movie not only influenced the Hong Kong action picture, it would also influence American action pictures. Sylvester Stallone would use the bus scene in Tango and Cash, several early scenes were copied in Rapid Fire, Brett Ratner took so much from this film in making Rush Hour (self-admitted in commentary in Rush Hour as well as Dragon Dynasty's Police Story DVD) and countless other action choreographers and directors would be directly or indirectly affected by this work. This movie was created because of the visionary ideas of Jackie Chan and also because of the backbreaking effort of Sing Ga Ban - Jackie Chan's Stuntman Association and their every increasing effort to out due rival stuntman association led by Sammo Hung. Their backbreaking effort helped make this a hit (26 million HK dollars and win the Best Film for the Hong Kong Film Awards) and became the favorite of action auteur directors everywhere.

DVD Notes: I was happy to get a R1 version of this film when Dragon Dynasty put out the DVD. The quality of the picture could be better (Police Story 2 has a much better print) but overall I am satisfied with it. The commentary with Hong Kong action movie expert Bey Logan and director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) was decent with Logan pointing out small tidbits of information like how Sammo Hung asked Bill Tung for horse advice during shooting, pointing out the cameo by Clarence Ford (Naked Killer) as the photographer and also pointing out who every person acting was (sometimes this got annoying). I did wish he would have put more info about one of my favorite actors Fung Hak-On who helped with the stunt choreography and played Danny Chu. Ratner would talk about how this movie influenced him and occasionally get his facts wrong (confuse Brigitte Lin with Maggie Cheung) and was completely ignorant about many Jackie Chan films (Winners and Sinners and every other early Jackie Chan film except Drunken Master) but was still decent to listen to.

Jackie Getting Started.......2007-02-17

Mostly a dated Chinese action movie. Some fun to be had - but mostly a lot of really stupid people running around firing pistols badly. To be fair, you can see how Jackie Chan was perfecting the special style that he brings to the big screen so effectively in his recent movies. See this flick once and move on.

Absolutely Chan-tastic!.......2007-02-08

Jackie Chan demonstates in this film that not only is he a great martial artist and dare-devil, but also a great director and a good actor. He wanted to prove that Hong Kong could produce movies as good or better than Hollywood for less money. I think in some ways he succeeded in that goal.

In an interview on this dvd, Jackie says that the financial constraints made shooting stunts more dangerous, because they couldn't rehearse them as much.

Another interesting fact from the interview is that Jackie's house in this movie was his house in real life.

This dvd is great as many others have attested. Regarding the dubbing, I doubt it would have been possible to retain the old English dub as this version is longer than the old vhs version. However, it would've been better if they had gotten an actor who sounded more like Jackie.

Depite a few slapstick scenes, this movie has a very real feel. The bad guys are not catoonish, and the action is not on a stage or in front of a blue screen. When you see somebody falling off a roof, it is a real person risking his or her life to make a stunning scene.

I personally agree with others that this may be Jackie's best movie. However, I must admit that my wife hated it. She thought the slapstick scenes were just dumb, and she is less impressed with stunts. So, you can't please everybody.

Jackie Chan takes up his usual cop role in this crime thriller and is hired to protect a very wealthy business man. The business man fears that he is going to be kidnapped, and that is exactly what happens. The kidnappers are holding him for ransom and demand 60 million dollars for his safe return. They order his wife to get the money. The cops do a great job of surveillance on the wife and do everything they need to do to catch the criminals, but they don't know that one of their top detectives is one of the kidnappers. Kent Cheng (Butcher Wing AKA "fatso" from Once Upon a Time in China #1) stars as the dirty cop and Jackie gets assigned to work with him. It gets very inense when Jackie suspects that Cheng is helping the kidnappers.

Jackie Chan has had many good acting performances in his career, but this tops them all. His usual slapstick comedy is completely absent, but he still does a few of the other things you have come to expect from him. In one scene he is in a car chase and his car gets tipped onto its side. Well, Jackie just pushes the car back on its wheels and keeps on driving. Jet Li was supposed to play this role which seems like it would have been a good choice, but Jet's acting wasn't as good back then as it is now. Jackie plays this role to perfection, and in my opinion, there is no way that Jet Li could have pulled this role off as well as Jackie. If you have ever doubted Jackie as an actor, then check this movie out to see what he can really do. I would actually recommend this movie more to non Jackie Chan fans, but Jackie's die hard fans will also enjoy it.

I have always known Kent Cheng as somewhat of a bumbling idiot on screen, so this movie was a real eye opener for me. He shows that he is a great actor when given the oppurtunity. He couldn't have played his role any better.

The movie also stars Chung Fa and Ken Lo who are involved in a group fight with Jackie, and Blacky Ko has a nice cameo as a captain of the Taiwan police force.

There is not as much fighting as most Jackie Chan movies, and they keep it more real. The stunt work is top notch and will have you saying ouch, but it is actually the car chases and huge explosions that give the most excitement.

This is almost a perfect movie. Rating- 4.5/5

The picture quality is very good. Subtitles are well written. The original Cantonese mono and Cantonese 5.1 tracks sound good. There is also an English dub that I didn't mind too much.

Dragon Dynasty gives the best special edition possible by having a commentary with the director Kirk Wong. Bey Logan joins in to provide information and ask questions to the director. One thing they talk about is how this movie is based on a true story, and they actually filmed on some of the real locations where real events happened. This is my favorite Dragon Dynasty commentary I have heard. Unlike the movie, there are many laugh out loud moments in the commentary. I just wish the movie was longer than 107 minutes so that they could have talked longer. Lucky for me Kirk Wong has a great 29 minute interview where he gives his thoughts on the cuts that Jackie made to the final cut of the movie.

The 12 minute interview with Teddy Chen (one of the writers) is very informative. He talks about the script itself and gives his thoughts on the actors.

3 deleted scenes are included.

The last special feature is interesting. Dragon Dynasty always includes the original trailer, which is nice, but this one is different than most. Since it was based on a true story, they actually show news footage and interviews at the start of the trailer.

The only problem I have with this DVD release is the cover art. Jackie looks like he is posing for a rap album.

I have a few good things. It is nicely filmed and the side kick got in a few funny lines. The rest of it, the swearing, the bloodshed, the cgi graphics. All of this is against what he always stood for. If this was the only Jackie Chan movie I had seen I would never watch another. I have seen almost all of his films, where are the morals here? Where are the life lessons. This movie left Me in a dark mood. Crime Story shows that Jackie can play a straight role, but why make a Chinese version of a Steven Segal movie. Hope he never tries this type of thing again. This has nothing to do with the other Police Stories, and should not be marketed this way. Every one of the Police Stories were progressively worse but the first three still hold up, and the initial one is near perfect. Yet even the clichéd feel good number four that perhaps went too far in the other direction of being too cuddly has so much more to offer. Jackie can do more roles suited for his age, tired of him using his once forbidden special effects to be who he was 20 years ago.

All in all, I found this to be a pretty good film. I just have one burning question: Why, when I'm putting this DVD in my player in 2007, am I seeing an ancient home video ad for Jean-Claude Van Damme's "Kickboxer"? I mean seriously, WTF?

Back to basics.......2007-02-21

I've only seen this movie once over a year ago, so it's not as fresh in my mind as it could be, but I can at least offer some things.
Unlike his other 4 installments of the police story series, this one doesent have really any comedic elements. It's a straight up drama/action movie. It came off a little depressing from what I remember, but it still had a pretty uplifting ending. There is a fight towards the end that may not be to that long, but still makes you realize why you starting liking Jackie Chan.
I won't waste time describing the plot because it's listed, so if you read it you can kind of see how this is more of a serious movie.
I still enjoyed it and again it has this the unique-ness that is Hong Hong cinema.
I'm waiting on my copy of this movie that should be coming in the mail any day now and I'll probably get a better picture of it once i see it again.

Like the other two movies in what I call the "Return to Hong Kong Trilogy" (New Police Story, The Myth, Rob B Hood) I recommend seeing this one as well. Whether you'll like it really depends on your tastes, I can't really say for sure!

An uneven movie but it satisfies the cravings of ardent Jackie Chan fans. A lot of emoting by Jackie and not as much fun to watch as his other movies.

Wow! Jackie CAN act!.......2006-12-29

This has to be the darkest Jackie Chan movie I've seen. But, that is not a bad thing. Here, we get to see Jackie expand his acting to the point of him being driven to tears as a malicious group of kids execute his team members one by one in front of him during a botched raid.

A New Police Story has Chan playing the disgraced inspector who must come back from alcoholism to bring justice for his fallen comrades. Enter a young man who mysteriously wants to help the fallen officer out. Of course, you don't know why until the end, but suffice it to say, he is the comedic relief at times and until the end, you have to wonder why he's there. What are his motives? Is he good or bad?

The unfortunate thing with this movie is some of it has been digitally enhanced to remove wires, but I can understand why. Unlike the first Police Story (which this has no connection with the previous characters), safety regulations are probably tougher now than they were when the first Police Story was shot. Plus, the budget is bigger and they can rehearse stunts. Of course, with Jackie Chan pushing 50, it's going to be tougher for him to recover from serious injuries. But, this doesn't detract from the action that occurs and believe me, there is some great stunt work in this movie.

The fight scenes are fast and furious, but don't expect there to be a lot. This is a story that hinges more on Jackie's character redeeming himself, both with the police force as well as his fiancée that never stopped loving or believing in him, even when the inspector himself felt he was a disgrace. Many might not like it, but for me, it was refreshing to see the focus more on Jackie's acting and his character rather than the actual fighting.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, possibly even more than the first Police Story. It's more polished and Jackie's acting is superb. There is still the funny humor in it and the use of props during the fights, especially the Lego fight and how can you not forget the skyscraper escape down the side of the building? Wow!

This is a must see. I highly recommend it!

Pros: I was VERY pleased with the video quality of this set, and the packaging is very attractive.

Bought this Police Story box set and was very surpise on how awesome this set is. Loaded with special features! I love Police Story and this is by far the best tribute to the trilogy. New and transformered into a modern look to our eyes and DVD players. I say...buy it!

A new wave Jackie movie.......2006-11-26

Wow did this one catch me by surprise. I thought for sure I was getting another goofy Jackie movie. NOT EVEN CLOSE!

The movie starts out with Jackie as a drunken cop. After showing him in some disgusting drunken moments, we get to see why he became like this. There is a group of kids going around terrorizing the police. They will do a standard bank job or something like that and then wait for the cops. Having serious firepower, skills that will relate to the x games later in the movie, and already being rich, the cops certainly have theri hands full. So the cops have serious problems and they finally get Jackie in a deadly game of 'can you do this to keep your fellow officers alive'? Needless to say he doesn't and becomes a drunk.

When the band of x-games teens are causing trouble again a young cop tries to get Jackie to help out. I know you have probably heard this type fo a cop story before but this movie is seriously one of the best looking movies I have seen in a while. All of the locations and buidings they are in are great to look at. If you have seen Jackie Chan's Who am I?, Rumble in the Bronx, or even the well done First Strike, then get ready for a change. New Police Story has very high production values and it is not cheesy. Might not be what you are used to in a Jackie movie, but it was a very nice change to see this.

The movie gets between a 3.5 and a 4 but could have gotten a 5. Rongguang Yu(the Iron Monkey) is in this movie and him and Jackie do not fight. That dissapointed me just a bit, but they still had some really good scenes together.

No classic, but a step in the right direction for Jackie.......2005-06-19

Jackie Chan has always used the original 'Police Story' series as a kind of safety net whenever his career hits a rough patch. The original was his response to his disastrous US cop movie 'The Protector' while the third entry was his attempt to recapture local audiences after a few high-profile failures. With his recent Hollywood outings scraping the concrete beneath the bottom of the barrel (The Tuxedo, Around the World in 80 Days, Rush Hour 2) he's gone back to Hong Kong and basics again. However, this time round he takes a few more chances, abandoning his old comic character and supporting cast (Maggie Cheung, Uncle Bill) for a comparatively darker outing as a broken-down cop drinking his way to oblivion after some thrill-seeking rich kids led by a typically OTT Daniel Wu kill his entire team. Naturally redemption is on the menu, but the stunts aren't quite as over-the-top or as plentiful as before, while the (intentional) comedy is kept to a minimum.

It's not up to the standards of his best work in the past, but it's light-years ahead of his US pictures and is a welcome return to form even if Chan's fight scenes fall short of his former glories (that said, there is a good bus sequence and an imaginative chase down the side of a building).

Jackie Chan passes the baton?.......2005-05-08

Longtime fans of Jackie Chan -- that is, those of us who were fans pre-Rush Hour -- know that his craziest stunts have always been reserved for his Hong Kong productions, no doubt due to the conservative nature of American films' insurance companies.

However, in recent years, Jackie has been trying to lay the groundwork for his post-action career by taking on roles with minimal action so that he can display his acting prowess, which has often been overlooked by "pure" action fans. He has shown great depth from time to time, and recent films like "Gorgeous" eschew almost all martial arts action in favor of real acting.

In "New Police Story," Jackie appears to pass the baton to his young costar, Nicholas Tse. I compare this film to "Drunken Master" or one of Jackie's other early films in that it is a master/student story, except that here, Jackie is the master on his way to retirement.

Jackie is Hong Kong inspector Wing, a 'top cop' who is disgraced when he leads a raid against a gang of rich punks that goes horribly wrong. After falling into a drunken depression, the younger brother of on of the fallen cops from the raid (Tse) steps in to help Wing find revenge -- and peace with himself.

Jackie has a number of dramatic scenes in this film and he carries them well -- I almost forgot it was Jackie Chan and not Chow Yun Fat or another Hong Kong actor known for drama. Jackie has a few action sequences, but he seems to allow Tse to carry out a lot of Jackie-style "goofy fights" in his stead (using his own coat as a weapon, etc.). I should mention that this is a very dark, violent film, quite unlike the usual Jackie Chan fair. Of Jackie's prior work, only "Crime Story" comes close, and this film is far darker.

All in all, this film is well worth seeing, although I suspect only Jackie and/or HK cinema fans will truly enjoy it. 4.5 out of 5 stars!
