Edward Elric passes the qualifying exams to become the youngest State Alchemist in history, and finds new friends, new challenges, and new dangers as the popular fantasy-adventure Fullmetal Alchemist continues. Ed doesn't get much time to savor his achievement: He and his brother Alphonse face an array of foes that includes a deranged alchemist and a serial killer. Ed also must face his new boss, Lt. Col. Roy Mustang, an unsmiling officer who may instill some patience and discipline in the young prodigy. The Elric brothers gain a friend in investigative officer Major Maes Hughes, whose warm nature juxtaposes Mustang's icy demeanor. Although these episodes offer plenty of intense action and broad comedy, what distinguishes Fullmetal Alchemist from other adventure series is its emotional honesty. When Ed narrowly escapes a violent death, he tearfully confesses his fear and loneliness, and his awareness of his all-too-human limitations--an admission few animated or live action heroes would make. (Rated TV PG: violence, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Description

He is a refugee, a loner from a land scarred with the wounds of war, tortured by memories of a happier time. His body is riddled with tattoos of alchemist symbols that allow him to use the ancient art for his murderous purpose. Includes four exciting episodes.

5 out of 5 stars Fullmetal Does Not Cease to Disappoint.......2007-04-20

Judging by the title, this volume does not cease to disappoint. It's still very humorous at times, and very serious at others. Expect to see some blood and brain-twizzlers, because this will really fry your brain.

5 out of 5 stars Among the best.......2007-02-06

I am not a spring chicken, so I get introduced to anime through my daughter. Some of it is fluffy love stories or improbable characters or situations that appear from nowhere to solve the day. Full Metal is none of these. The characters are believable even when they are a talking metal suit of armor. Ed and Al are young boys. Their mother dies. They desparately want her back. They do something forbidden. They pay. And they learn what the costs are. The world is a confusing place. They navigate, sometimes on their own and sometimes with people who they meet along the way. Not everyone is who they seem at the start. Finally they confront the costs of their and other peoples violations of the rules. Through the story there is humor and growth. The story is told from their point of view. They do not give in to the tragedies that surround them and keep fighting for the truth and for each other. I highly recommend this series for young teens and old fogies (that's me). Much better than most things available for teens these days. I rank this up with Dante and Faust as literature about pacts made by people not understanding the full consequences of their actions fighting to restore the balance of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars I love this!!.......2006-07-26

I love the full metal alchemist series. Im actually collecting the series. I use to watch it on T.V but then I decided that I wanted to own it. Its great for fans

5 out of 5 stars I See Now What Everyone's Talking About.......2006-06-12

It took me a long time to find my way to Fullmetal Alchemist but eventually, after getting so many recommendations and reading all of the many, many reviews, I decided to take the chance on what I had thought appeared to be a childish series. Now, two volumes in, I have no regrets. FMA has proved to me with these four episodes that it has everything that makes an anime great, including a good story, lovable characters, fluid animation, with an emotional soundtrack backing all of this. This series certainly is shaping up to be everything that the critics say, and I can't wait to hurry on to the next volume in line.

First, however, the review for Fullmetal Alchemist: 2: Scarred Man of the East.

In volume one, the story begins with the Elric Brothers journeying to find the Philosopher's Stone, but soon after it takes a trip into the brother's dark past. This volume continues along in that thread, showing the history of how Edward and Alphonse became associated with the State Alchemists, and of Edward's first missions as a government appointed alchemist. After the explosive start to this series, I remained somewhat skeptical. Good starts for an anime never mean the anime will stay good (Tenjho Tenge and Desert Punk are two examples). But this volume was able to keep up with what the first volume presented. The story was still as dark as it was earlier, and the characters become even more lovable as we see just how strong-willed Edward is, and how kind-hearted the cursed Alphonse is.

To be completely honest, I'm in love with this series. Don't judge a book by its cover, as the cliche goes, and in this case it's definitely true. While not so mature as to scare away children, this series contains just enough maturity within the story to entertain adults. Plus, when it calls for comedy, FMA delivers in loads. I highly recommend this volume and this series to anyone who wants to see a good anime. From what I hear, this series has an amazing ending, but for now let's start with the amazing beginning.

5 out of 5 stars One word WOW! .......2005-12-10

If you like anime at all you MUST see this show once. Even if you think anime is not "cool" this show might indeed change your mind! Everything about it is a 10 the voice acting is some of the best I have ever heard. Standing O for them all the way! Perfect Dub cast. The animation leaves you speechless the whole show makes you feel every emotion known to man.
This is Anime at it's best!
Get the first volume to fully understand the story it is just as good, this show just keeps getting better!

The Fox and the Hound marked the last collaboration between Disney's older artists, including three of the "Nine Old Men" (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and Woolie Reitherman), and the young animators who would make the record-breaking films of the '90s. Based on a book by Daniel P. Mannix, the film tells the story of a bloodhound puppy and a fox kit who begin as friends but are forced to become enemies. Tod and Copper barely establish their friendship before Copper begins his training as hunting dog. Unfortunately, neither character develops much of a personality, which makes it difficult to care about them. The screen comes alive near end of the film, when Tod and Copper have to join forces to fight off an enormous bear. It had been years since Disney produced a sequence with this kind of feral power--and years would pass before they surpassed it. The Fox and the Hound ranks as one of the studio's lesser efforts, but it suggests that better films were soon to follow. (Ages 5 and older) --Charles Solomon

Description

Disney proudly presents its 24th full-length animated film -- hailed as "vintage Disney" by The Washington Post. This highly acclaimed classic blends vibrant animation and breathtaking action to tell the story of two best friends who didn't know they were supposed to be enemies. The fun and adventure begin when a lonely widow adopts an orphaned fox cub named Tod. The mischievous fox soon meets up with Copper, an adorable hound puppy. As the innocent pair grow up together in the forest, they become inseparable friends. But the day soon arrives when their friendship is put to the ultimate test! "Echoing the dramatic moods and imagery of BAMBI and LADY AND THE TRAMP" (Seattle Times) -- and reflecting such timeless values as love, courage, and respect for life -- THE FOX AND THE HOUND has captured an honored place among Disney's most beloved and endearing animated classics.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, but watch some of the messages.......2007-07-21

This movie as the ingredients, conflict/challenge and overcoming the odd friendship between a fox and a hound. I thought they demonstrated it quite well with a well written story. However, my daughter isn't old enough to ask questions, and I'm concerned that I have to explain why people would hunt or kill something so sweet as a fox or other animals. Maybe it's not a big deal, but not sure I want her to see it for awhile.

3 out of 5 stars Sad Movie.......2007-07-09

I like this movie, but I don't love it. I thought it sounded horrible that Tod and Copper weren't suppose to be friends. It hurts when you want to be somebody's friend but can't. It turned out that Widow Tweed had no right to keep a fox like Tod for a pet and had to make him live in the forest, although Amos Slade still wanted to shoot him. The only happy moment in this movie was when Tod found a relationship with Vixey.

I also want to add that it sounded more than appropriate for Jack Albertson to provide Slade's voice because Slade almost looked like Jack Albertson himself.

5 out of 5 stars AMIGOS PARA SIEMPRE!!.......2007-06-30

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming.......2007-06-08

The Fox And The Hound is a charming story about two friends who should be enemys. This is a movie for the whole family to enjoy. Everyone should see it. One of Disney's best.

5 out of 5 stars Remembering What I Never Knew.......2007-04-11

I know I saw The Fox and The Hound back in the day. I even sorta could conjure up the plot outline, if hazy around the edges. Seeing it again made me realize, this is a great family movie. The animation is classic, and the story is without fail. I am so glad we bought it, so we can see it again and again. Thanks to Disney for reaching into the vault to bring us this gem.

"Only the gods see everything," cautions one scientist as Dr. James Xavier (Ray Milland) experiments with a formula that will allow the human eye to see beyond the wavelength of visible light. "I am closing in on the gods," he responds with the hubris that is doomed to destroy his overreaching ambition. A mix of Greek tragedy and sci-fi potboiler, Roger Corman's X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (simply identified as X in the eerie, odd opening credits) is a familiar tale of a scientist who risks everything to explore the unknown and is finally driven mad by, literally, seeing too much. Peeping through the clothes of comely women is all good adolescent fun until the gift becomes a nightmare as his sight rages out of control. The possibilities suggested in the hints of addiction and inconsistent bouts of megalomania remain tantalizingly unexplored in the unfocused script, and Corman's cut-rate special effects are often more hokey than haunting (the "city dissolved in an acid of light" that Xavier poetically describes becomes fuzzy photography through a series of color filters). Don Rickles offers a venal turn as a scheming carnival barker turned blackmailing con man, and Diana Van der Vlis is understanding as a sympathetic scientist who tries to rescue Xavier from his spiral into tortured madness, but in the tradition of Greek tragedy, he is doomed to be destroyed by the very gifts he desires.

MGM's widescreen disc also features commentary by director-producer Corman. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars X-Ray Eyes and other things that go Bump in the Night.......2007-03-11

Neat little bit of horror. What a great outlandish idea. Ray Milland as Dr. James Xavier raelly plays this one with convinction considering the genre. That's what makes it work.

4 out of 5 stars Good solid performance from Ray Milland , creepy.......2005-11-01

The best thing about this film is the question of what would happen if we each had a great power . How would we personally use it and would would be its effect on us morally ?

One can of course take this idea further , but for now I'm happy to let the film do that .

This may be a B picture and therefore possibly ignored or forgotten , but MGM has done the right thing by making it available again .

As the film goes on , the viewer sees the consequences of a scientific discovery . You should see this film if you are a horror fan or are new to the genre and only beginning to discover the classics of this type .

The ending will stay with you .

4 out of 5 stars Not Nice to Fool Mother Nature.......2005-10-12

Don't ask for it or you may get more than you bargained for. This is kind of a cool movie, a bit risqué and definitely a cult classic. Ray certainly pioneered many roads in his career. He sort of went beyond the beyond in this film. Perhaps he was a true visionary!

4 out of 5 stars Matthew 5:29.......2005-10-11

The same director (Roger Corman) that brought you "Attack of the Giant Crab Monsters" (1957) now brings you to new depths of depravity. Employing such veteran actors as Ray Milland "The Thing with Two Heads" (1972) and the latest scientific speculation, he has brought you "X - The Man with the X-Ray Eyes" (1963). The message is so important that it was transferred to DVD.

Moderation in all things. What happens if you get too much of a good thing?

Dr. James Xavier finds out what it is like going beyond underwear. And into the mysteries of life. His creation of drops that let you see on a new plane can be dangerous. The more he drops the more he sees.

The visual effects are worth the movie alone. Just look what happened when he was monkeying around?

Where will this all end?

4 out of 5 stars "My dear friend, only the gods see everything.".......2005-03-16

In X - The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963) Dr. James Xavier, played by Ray Milland, desires the ability to `access the entire wavelength spectrum' so that he may see what no one else can...what male hasn't had that dream? Seriously, if you ever read a comic book, there was always an advertisement, usually between ads for Wildroot hair tonic, how to become a muscle man, or an offer for real Texas rattlesnake eggs, that touted `X-Ray Glasses' featuring a crudely drawn illustration of a guy wearing said glasses and not only having the ability to see the bones in his hand, but also being able to see through a woman's clothes...and I bet a great deal of them were sold, not because they actually worked (most of us, on some level, knew they wouldn't), but on the very slight possibility that they might. Produced and directed by Roger Corman (Pit and the Pendulum, The Masque of the Red Death), the film stars Oscar winner Ray Milland (The Lost Weekend, The Big Clock). Also appearing is Diana Van der Vlis (The Girl in Black Stockings), Harold Stone (Spartacus), John Hoyt (Attack of the Puppet People), and Don `Mr. Warmth' Rickles (Beach Blanket Bingo, Kelly's Heroes).

As I already mentioned, Milland plays Dr. James Xavier, a man with an obsession. You see, as humans, we only see about ten percent of what's actually out there, and he wants more (greedy bastich). During his research he develops the X formula, which in experiments allows a monkey to see through cardboard, but has a curious side effect of death...Xavier chalks this up to the monkeys minuscule brain not being able to comprehend what it sees, thus shutting down and causing the demise, but humans are smarter than monkeys, so shouldn't have the same problem, right? Right...so Xavier begins experiments on himself, and finds success, but not without a price. After the accidental death of a colleague (or murder, however you want to look at it), Xavier is forced to take a hasty leave, joining a carnival, calling himself Mentallo, using his newfound ability to scrounge a few bucks by impressing the rubes, and donning sunglasses much like those Terminator glasses your grandmother wears. This leads to his involvement with a rather odious carnie and small time hustler named Crane (Rickles), who convinces Xavier to open an inner city clinic and earn even bigger bucks by `healing' the poor. Things start out relatively well, but that changes as this new venture eventually falls apart, so what's next? Well, if you have X-ray vision and need a lot of dough, where would you go? Las Vegas? Sounds like a plan, but initial success is yet again tainted by dismal failure, and soon Xavier is on the run again...oh yeah, did I mention the effects of his continual use of the X formula results in cumulative effects?

In case you're wondering if there are any scenes where Xavier sees through women's clothes, yes there is, as at one point he is talked into going to a swinging party, featuring all kinds of comely, young females. Do we get to see what he sees? Kind of, as we see a bunch of naked backs and legs, but that's about it...it was oddly creepy as Milland presents such a intense and focused character throughout the story, but for a few moments we see a lascivious side that's counteracts the serious nature of the film and his character...speaking of oddly creepy, check out a mature Milland (he was in his mid 50's at the time) frugging it up at the party...it's a brief scene, but one that will be stuck in my minds eye for quite some time. Milland does quite a good job here (acting, not dancing), the scientist ultimately punished by his own arrogance, but one can't help feel an overall sense of sadness in that such an accomplished actor was now resigned to appearing in somewhat schlocky material as this...and it got progressively worse, with such features as Frogs (1972), The Thing with Two Heads (1972), and The Attic (1979) looming in his future. Oh well, work is work, I suppose...the rest of the cast is rather bland, except for Rickles, who gets in a few good zingers at some carnival patrons expense. While this is certainly an inexpensive feature, Corman generally always, in my opinion, seemed to be able to get the most for his money in terms of his films having better production values than expected. The direction is very good, as the pacing is quick (the running time is a minimal 79 minutes). Probably the most interesting aspect of the story is the notion that the main characters power of sight keeps developing (that whole cumulative effect I spoke of earlier). This presents the idea that eventually the characters ability will extend ad infinitum, allowing one to speculate that eventually he'll be able to see into the very core of the universe, and depending on your beliefs, possibly even the Creator himself. The special effects are not particularly spectacular, but they worked for me, and I'm sure at the time they probably appeared quite trippy and psychotropic (check out the opening scenes featuring bloody eyeballs). There are rumors that the ending provided here was actually shortened, that Milland's character had one more line, and the abrupt ending of the film seems to support this, but Corman has maintained this wasn't true. Regardless if this is true or not, it's still a memorable ending.

The wide screen anamorphic (1.85:1) presentation on this DVD from MGM looks very clean and sharp, and the Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono audio comes through clearly. There are a couple of special features including the original 5-minute theatrical prologue that provides the audience an introduction to the five senses (when they started talking about the sense of taste, watch for some kid massacring an ice cream cone), a running audio commentary track with Roger Corman, and an original theatrical trailer.

Those people seeking to relive the "8TH Man" TV show from the '60's may be in for a shock. This is post - Akira anime. Good story, but gory in many places. Oh, and (PLOT SPOILER) this 8 Man kills.

Good for older teens and adults. Not for your kids - the ones who are the age YOU were when you watched "8TH Man".

Still......

There is a side if me that is curious as to how Marine Boy, Prince Planet, The Amazing Three and Gigantor would fare in this darker age.

And why isn't the TV series on DVD?

5 out of 5 stars I never forgot how good this was.......2007-02-11

I bought this movie on tape 3 times becuase it was stolen each time back in the day. I got it recently and I still love it the sameway. The story is very original and predecitable as hell, but its still one of the best. The action scenes and gore is pretty graphic. I wont spoil anything for you at all. But the story is this, the guy isn't even a cop, he hates cops. He's a private investigator he is gravely injured and is remade in a cyborg body and fights crime. I'll just end this review and say if you love anime, then you need this in your collection. You wont be disappointed. I also recommend Angel Cop also, thats better than this.

5 out of 5 stars 8 Man Rocks.......2006-03-15

Well this was a blind pick for me before I ordered it. Hadn't seen on it on the sci-fi ch/ like some of you, just read the synopsis and the story sounded really cool, like an anime version of Robocop or something.
Well its way better than Robocop, though I thoroughly enjoyed that movie as a kid. I was very impressed w/ the look of the piece, most directors don't use the purple haze back/foreground, that was cool. If you like cop-animes you will love this! If you want monsters/vampires you will hate it. It's actually very realistic? The story is just as engaging as the action, and theres lots of action.
You may also like Goku: Midnight Eye, Psychic Wars, Psycho Diver, Black Jack and BioHunter.
Bottom line it was 100+mins and it felt like 30? I wanted it to be longer, or have another separate feature. Hope they make a sequel. The price is well worth it, very good deal.

5 out of 5 stars 8 Man.......2006-03-11

I have the tapes, just wanted the compilation on DVD, very happy with it. Thankyou.

5 out of 5 stars look into the future.......2005-09-07

I found this movie to be one of the many animes about cyborgs, this one has a twist, the cyborg is having trouble controlling his aggression when taking on the bad guys. The thought that he is becoming as violent as the enemy he must stop causing him to doubt his affectiveness as a hero.

This is a great interview with Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson together!
They talk very open about various things.
I watched and listen to this interview many times and it never bores me.
And the song that Lou Reed performs is great too!

    2 out of 5 stars I expected something a little different..........2001-06-18

Maybe this is stupid: I don't know for certain, but I expected a piece of anime along the lines of 8-Man: After - never a live action movie at all. This was alright, but it wasn't fabulous.

    4 out of 5 stars A surprisinly thoughtful movie.......2001-05-15

I read the blurb on the back of the box and thought this sounded like a silly action film to enjoy on a rainy night, and in some ways it is, but there is also some thought put into the premise of the story.

This dubbed vesion of the film is narrated by Chief Tanaka in a film noir style. My boyfriend found it a bit annoying that Tanaka's voice was done by a man who had dubbed for a lot of different Japanese Anime, but I thought his voice fit well.

Tanaka explains how one of the men in his department was shot and killed by a gangster. Instead of letting an abulance take the man to the hospital Chief Tanaka dragged the body to his own car and ended up going for help to Doctor Tanai. Doctor Tania is reasearching cybernetics and needs only a fresh corpse to continue with his experiments. Tanai takes the dead policeman and transforms him into 8 Man.

Tanaka sets 8 Man up as a Private Detective named Azuma and the policeman's girl friend Sachiko ends up working for him. Azuma's former partner in the meantime goes undercover to help take down the man who had Azuma's former self murdered. When he in turn gets shot 8 Man and Chief Tanaka end up taking the gangster out.

8 Man, was not Dr. Tanai's first experiment as it turns out. Tanai made his own son Ken into a robot after he was killed in a car accident. Ken is what brings the thoughtfulness to the movie. Unlike Azuma or 8 man, Ken was left with his memories of being fully human. He hates his fater for what he has become and murders people out of spite. He makes Azuma doubt the worth of his own existance. Ken points out that he can never love Sachiko as he might wish to. Azuma ends up with his own angst about this half-life he has been given.

What Azuma decides to do with the second chance which was forced upon him makes for a truly involving story, at least for me.

    1 out of 5 stars BAD!.......2000-10-10

this is NOT a good movie! Bad acting, story, and picture! I was hoping this would be the first anime of the 8man After dvd I had but Alass it was not. Pass on this one unless U HAVE 2 have it!

    4 out of 5 stars A kung fu classic.......2007-09-08

Mung Yuen Men plays a young man who wants to learn kung fu instead of being a scholar. He goes to look for a kung fu teacher. His first teacher is a cook played by Chan Lung. Right as Mung Yuen Men starts learning his teacher gets killed by an assassin played by Wilson Tong. His next teacher is played by the great Alan Chui. Right as he begins to learn Alan Chui gets killed by the same assassin. After learning from a third teacher Mung Yuen Men is finally good enough to take revenge on the killer.

All of the fights are long and exciting and expertly choreographed by Wilson Tong. Chan Lung's fight is pretty good. Alan Chui's fight is outstanding. Alan Chui's acrobatic skills are second to none and he also has some of the sickest kung fu moves around. Both Alan Chui and Wilson Tong have unlimited moves in their repertoires and it makes for an amazing fight. Then when you think the movie can't get any better, it does! The beautiful Lily Li plays the third teacher and teaches Mung Yuen Men the soft fist. Lily Li is one of my favorite kung fu movie stars and her fight with Wilson Tong is probably the best fight of her career. The only other time I have seen her look this good was in 'The Loot'.

All of the fight scenes are good but the final fight takes it up another notch. Get ready to rewind a few times.

The star of the movie Mung Yuen Men has acrobatic skills that are up there with anybody. It is sad that he only got a handful of lead roles like this. I would have him on my list of favorites but he just wasn't in very many movies.
