David Carradine AM and PM Tai Chi .......2007-05-19
I bought this DVD because I need to regain some agility and lose some weight. I limbered up after about two weeks. The weight loss will take longer, but I'm in no hurry. It is a good program for someone who has poor coordination and zero athletic ability, and hates to exercise.
not what I expected.......2007-03-08
I wasn't as pleased with this DVD as I thought I would be. I expected more from David Carradine. It is truly a begginers Tai Chi. I would like to have had no back ground music, and to have had more Tai chi!!!
Tai Chi Exercise DVD.......2006-07-16
This is an excellent exercise dvd.Anyone interested in this kind of exercise should purchase the dvd. I took Tai Chi for 3 months at a gym. I then decided to buy this dvd and it is exactly like the person that taught at the gym. It is great for balance. It ia a mind, body and also meditation exercise .It is beginner focused and that helps. You will love it.
Frustrating Camera Angle and Speed.......2006-04-10
Not for beginners. I used to take Tai Chi, so thought this DVD might get me going again at home. It didn't because it's hard to use. In class, beginners are put in the middle, so they always have someone in front of them to mimic. This DVD is filmed like an aerobics video--as if you are in front of the class watching them. As a result, "right" and "left" are the opposite directions for you and the people on screen. It would be better if it was filmed as if you were IN the class. There are some reverse angle "picture in picture" parts that attempt this, but I found it to be very difficult to mimic the movements and keep up--especially in the full form. Footwork is key, yet some shots do not show what the feet are doing. I also think the movements should be slower, or at least have a slow runthrough and then a "normal speed" one. Finally, it would also help to have an overhead view or some instruction which notes which direction to move. Some steps seem to be moving off on a 45 degree angle which helps when you realize it.
Great!.......2006-03-18
For me this DVD is an AM Workout. When I worked out at night I was up most of the night. I simply could not fall asleep. It really seemed to energize me. I didn't put the connection together until after 3 workouts.
I'm a beginner and found the DVD very enjoyable, even fun & not hard at all. After following along about 6 times I found I really enjoyed the option of doing it without the verbal instruction. That's the best! I love having that option. It's very peaceful. Also, I enjoyed watching and following the women behind David Carradine. They're great! I can only aspire to the level of the Asian master who is also featured on this DVD. All in all, this DVD was well worth the money.

Good exercise for health inside out........2007-05-13
I started this exercise for 1.5 months and see some result, since I'm overweight,it's not a weight loss(for now) but my neck & back aches were gone and more energy. I started with the same repetitions as in DVD (6)then build up to 9 and now 12 will be 24 as Dr. Yang said soon. The exercise need quiet time to do.
Excellent Qigong exercise.......2006-10-17
I probably own four or five books on the 8 Pieces of Brocade, a Qigong exercise that at first does not appear to be complex or difficult to learn. After reading the various books on this exercise I felt that I had a pretty good grasp of how to do the exercises and what to expect. Watching this DVD was very enlightening and corrected some misconceptions I had about the exercises. The book by Dr. Yang, Jwing Ming is excellent, but as suggested by the author, using the DVD and the book together is a very effective technique for obtaining accurate and effective results while doing this form.
The DVD offers both the Sitting and Standing versions of the 8 Pieces of Brocade exercise. Dr. Yang starts off the DVD with a history of the 8 Pieces of Brocade, which was created approximately one thousand years ago.
The 8 Pieces of Brocade is presented in two main sections, the sitting version and the standing version. First shown is an analysis of the steps in the sitting version.
Throughout this analysis the DVD uses multiple angle shots to display the front, sides and rear of Dr. Yang as he demonstrates each of the movements. Additionally, the added benefit of sound helps the student to realize for example how hard to tap the teeth, or when to breath in and out. Even the tapping of the fingers on the back of the skull during one of the exercises helps the student to do the movement correctly by listening to the sound that is made when Dr. Yang demonstrates the movement.
Following a very detailed and clear presentation during the analysis of the 8 Pieces of Brocade, the form is then shown in its entirety. With the convenient chapter markers available on the DVD, the student can easily follow along whatever section they choose. The movement to DVD for the YMAA products has made learning much easier by allowing this convenient and instant access to any part of the material.
After the analysis of the sitting form of the 8 Pieces of Brocade, the DVD then presents the analysis of the standing form of the 8 Pieces of Brocade, followed by a continuous demonstration of the form.
The student is then treated to a lecture by Dr. Yang on the 8 Pieces of Brocade. This lecture is approximately 50 minutes and has a wealth of information about the form. Clever use of animation helps to illustrate the flow of chi that occurs while doing the form.
In my opinion, the way to learn martial arts successfully is to employ the following tools:
Instruction from a teacher
Studying printed material
Visualization in your mind
Self practice and study while doing the forms
Writing a journal to record what is learned or taught during each lesson
Watching videos of the teacher
Filming yourself and comparing it to the image you had in your mind of how you were doing the form
Socialize and share your knowledge with other students and work on the principles together
Try teaching one of the concepts, moves, techniques or applications to a person who has no knowledge of Taijiquan. In the process you will easily learn as much as the person you are trying to teach.
This DVD is one of the above mentioned tools, and a wonderful addition for the serious student to learn and practice properly the 8 Pieces of Brocade.
A very good Qigong beginner's introduction DVD.......2006-03-22
This DVD lives up to its promises - it introduces you to the world of Qigong. I have personally practised some Qigong exercises before - from some books - but after watching this DVD I realized that I was doing them somewhat wrong. I didn't see any of what I had been practising in this video, however, doing Qigong is like a poem (actually, it was a poem for ancient Chinese), like a moving meditation, it's soft and smooth, whereas I had a rigid and strict execution. This DVD presents two sets of exercises - sitting (on a bed, let's say) for elderly and weak people, and standing - for everyone else. There is a track presenting the history of Qigong, specifically this set, and detailed explanations of each exercise, including medical benefits (e.g. what internal organ you would be massaging by doing them). Granted, you need more information (e.g.on breathing - it is only briefly touched), but then again, a beginner could only get so much or else (s)he becomes scared of so many new things. Still, Dr. Yang has a book with the same title, I've ordered and received mine (but haven't started reading it yet), that should explain more things. The book and the video complement each other - the former has more information, but the latter shows you the execution. Get them both.
I'm also a beginner, and have no teacher, but apparently, looking at customer reviews for Qigong beginners, this is the course path that I recommend (that is what I am going to order and study, even if I get a teacher in the meantime):
- Stick to 8 Pieces of Brocade until you execute it well, and by that I mean not only physical execution - which you will probably get soon, it's very simple, but also mental - you master it when you are able to focus on it from beginning to end, or sort of.
- Get "Chi Kung: The Way of healing" by Master Lam Kam Chuen, those exercises should prepare you for the next stage
- Get "Chi Kung: The Way of energy" by Master Lam Kam Chuen and "Opening the energy gates of your body" by Bruce Frantzis Kumar, those books complement each other. Note that apparently all the exercise in "Way of healing" are actually easier selections from "Way of energy", so don't be surprised. I guess, because of this you could skip the "Way of healing" phase completely.
When all the above is done - you should have greatly improved your energetics, but it could take years or even a lifetime without a teacher. You are then ready to study Dr. Yang's other books - I won't write the relevant ones here (although I had started too, but removed the paragraph), by then you should know which they are, they don't belong in this beginner's review. Anyway, at that stage you should probably get a teacher.
In short, this is a nice beginner's introduction, short of having a teacher. Did I mention to get a teacher?
Qigong for Health.......2006-02-24
I highly reccommend this DVD for interested beginners and experienced Martial Arts practitioners alike who wish to learn a set of Qigong exercises designed to improve health. The DVD is thoughtfully produced and has a lot of interesting background and historical information. A novice will be able to learn a complete set of breathing and movement exercises in a very short time.
Works great.......2006-01-24
I have had this a while, but haven't used it since it's so easy, it's boring. Therefore, I only use it when I'm not feeling well.
Recently I had a severe allergic reaction & used this. I have been using herbs & acupuncture, but I really felt so much better faster using this to build up my energy. Even when I was very dizzy & felt horrible, I went very slowly on the standing exercises & felt much better after, more energy deep down & was able to fall asleep faster then I had in days.
The sitting ones are even more easy for those who cannot stand.
In the demonstration/how-to area, there is an English or American narrator while they show a clip of Dr. Yang doing the exercises a few times. In another section, the practice is Dr. Yang shows you the complete exercises about 3-20x each which only takes about 10-15 min. Unfortunately on mine, in this section, the sound seems to be faster/off by 3-5 full seconds.
Like almost all Qi Gong videos, they all say once you start, you must complete it & I always do a return to chi motion.
There are A LOT of extras. There is a nice amount of lecture about the basics of energy flow & how Qi Gong works. This dvd is almost two hours long, so you are getting your money's worth. Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming is one man any serious martial artist I have ever talked to knows & has read about.
There are trailers on his site at ymaa.

The cover touts it as "the reunion of martial arts, yoga, and meditation," but for those who have practiced those disciplines separately but not in combination, Cameron Shayne's Budokon Beginning Practice offers a fresh, even unique approach to a home exercise regimen. Yoga, martial arts, and meditation don't actually commingle in this approximately 38-minute program (also included is a version that's about 10 minutes shorter); a fairly traditional, 20-minute yoga practice (for creating "power through stillness") is followed by 15 minutes of martial arts ("power through movement") and about three minutes of meditation ("power through emptiness"). The yoga asanas, including forward bends, lunges, twists, standing poses, and several sun salutations, provide a good stretch and warm-up for the martial arts moves; the latter, with their short, vigorous punches and kicks mostly performed from a traditional "fighting stance," offer a contrast to the slower, deeper yoga postures, and the sequence of the two is genuinely invigorating. Shayne, a martial arts master who also knows his yoga, provides excellent instruction throughout, and easier versions of the yoga poses are demonstrated. There's also a "pose guide" option, accessible both separately and during the workout, to explicate all the poses and movements in greater detail. --Sam Graham
Description
A rousing fusion of fast-paced Ashtanga yoga, explosive martial arts and life-affirming meditation, Cameron Shayne¹s Budokon system puts Eastern practices on a new plane. Anyone looking for a high-energy workout that also sharpens mental focus and brings a deeper feeling of purpose will find it on their own terms with Budokon. Shayne¹s personal energy and passionate mastery of all three disciplines is affecting; the kicks and punches are exhilarating; and the meditations are both grounding and eye opening.
Customer Reviews:
Yoga portion is difficult.......2007-05-03
The concept is very good. I like variety. I found the yoga portion very difficult as I have NOT been exercising. The martial arts section was easier for me. Overall, I think this DVD would be challenging for someone who has NOT been exercising, but it is a good workout and you need to do the moves as best as you can.
A little disappointed.......2007-04-25
When Cameron Shayne says "beginner" he means it. Not that this DVD isn't presented well. Mr. Shayne is obviously adept at both martial arts and yoga, but this tape does not "combine" the arts as advertised. You do a little yoga, stop, then you do a little karate. The finish is a standing meditation. Having practiced karate sporadically over a twenty year period with advancement through the ranks and some proficiency and yoga steadily over three decades, I was excited that someone had purportedly blended the arts. Truly excited. But when I did the workout the first time, I found that my basic training in both arts was enough to get through the workout without breaking a sweat. I don't claim to be adept at either, but once you have learned to punch and kick and practiced karate for some time, and worked your yoga practice somewhat, you're already way past this tape. Not past Mr. Shayne, however. The flashes of brilliance he shows in both are impressive. I just wish he was teaching a little more of it here. If you have a background in these arts, use your imagination and create your workout as Mr. Shayne did. Save the fifteen bucks.
no sweat.......2007-03-03
I like Cameron Shayne as an instructor and the way he teaches but the dvd is for a beginner only because if you want a good workout forget it. Just when you start to get going it is over. Even the meditation at the end is practically nothing. The concept of Budokon is good so he should make a serious dvd.
Awesome.......2007-01-18
Great workout. Courtney Cox should get kickbacks for introducing this workout to the general public in her interviews.
Heather Lee-Strong
Love It!.......2007-01-03
Budokon for beginners is just what I was looking for. A workout that relaxes and makes me sweat at the same time. I have slimmed down and feel realy centered.

Stay limber!.......2007-08-07
Since beginning my martial arts journey a few months ago, I wanted to find some ways to increase my flexibility outside the dojo. I found a great video called Ultimate Flexibility by Sang H. Kim. Sang provides 3 different workouts that are less than 30 minutes each, so it's easy for anyone to fit into their busy schedule. Simple exercises to keep you flexible from head to toe! There's also a great bonus section on stretches to improve your kicks and splits.
Great Routines.......2007-07-26
I recently viewed this DVD in order to learn some good stretching techniques for martial arts and I was not dissapointed. All three of the routines are excellent and stretch the entire body. No matter what the athletic endeavor, I think this DVD provides the perfect stretching routine.
Good basic stretching, very little is innovative .......2007-06-18
To give you an idea of my ability, I have been doing yoga for over 5 years & a full knees & nose on the floor straight back butterfly stretch is 90% of the time too easy for me, most times can touch my nose to my knees in standing or seated fwd bend & on a good day can do a full Russian split but not a fwd split.
The menu options are intro, easy workout, moderate & intense. The bonus has 10 min on kicking, an old video of him for advanced exercises & 1 min trailers of 6 other martial arts dvds. The production values are good, his speaking sound & lighting are nice. The camera work was very good (I wish all workouts had this cameraman & director). The camera stayed back to see his whole body almost at all times. Only occasionally to see where to put emphasis, such as seeing that he is standing on tip toes, or how to move into that stretch, etc. does the camera zoom in for just long enough to see, then stays back. There is NO MUSIC except for the menu & at the end of each workout.
Sang H. Kim is alone on floor with natural beige tie-dye curtain behind him, black mat on the floor & 2 simple black/red/white Asian painting next to him on either side. He gives little instruction, though his English is clear & no problem understanding & tells you & shows you quick first, then has you do everything as he counts to 8 for each side. He moves in a good pace so you just keep up, not get bored, but w/o music & everything counted it still bored me a little.
Intro is 8 min about how stretching is good & about how the dvd works.
Easy Workout: 20 min, basic necks, shoulder, arm, wrist circles, hip circles, leg stretches, yoga sitting fwd stretch, wide leg stretch normal & stretching to each foot, butterfly, bridge, child's pose, spine rocking, etc. All the stretches are done laying down, seated, kneeling or on knees. The same stretches almost any workout dvd has, maybe 1 or 2 different & some basic yoga ones for the everyday person. I didn't feel much, a little stretched out, but this was below my ability. There was a couple stretches at angles most dvds don't do but so far wasn't impressed.
Moderate Workout: 20 min, neck stretches w/hand pushing, wrist twists & pulling with other hand & each individual finger. Nothing you can't figure out on your own. Basic stretches like above, some little deeper, not really different then most workout dvds, more butterfly, sitting forward bend, wide angle, half attempt at split, lunges, ends in shoulder stand. Only a few moves were different the most basic stretch or yoga dvds. Most of the stretches are done laying down, seated, kneeling, on knees except shoulder stand. Most people who exercise at least semi-regularly should be able to handle this with no problem. I felt more stretched out, but still didn't feel that much.
Intense Workout: 16 min. Ok, this one was harder after doing the other 2 with only short breaks in between. This one was done much faster, like cardio speed for a few stretches & it did feel real good. It then slow down to some of the regular stretches. This one had more lunges with torso twisting, modified side angle pose, sitting wide angle stretch to each side, deeper side lunges to the ground, camel, bridge but only feet & skull on ground, wheel, etc.
By this time, my legs got rubbery. This one was more my speed & about now 1/3 of the moves were different & felt good. After doing all 3, the next day I only felt a tiny bit sore & a little stretched out, about what was to be expected after any 56 min of normal mainstream stretching.
Bonus Kicking: 10 min, is 2 general stretches, practicing slowly w/a chair & regular speed front kicks, side, back, roundhouse, spinning kick. The roundhouse he only shows one leg. His kicking is still very flexible & with great control.
Bonus Advanced Kicking Exercises: 7 min of him in 1988 with blue mat & looks like a gym. Lunges, wide angle fwd bend, lateral touching of the legs in wide angle, splits & he even touches his head to toes in that position, split & rolling back/forth.
Not sure if it was him or maybe they had to film it many times & was at the end of the night, but his energy seemed a bit low, careful. On the easy, moderate, intense workouts, 80% time I had more flexibility then him. I was expecting more body awareness & more fluid feel to the workout & how the body is stretched/released considering he's a martial artist. Some of the stretches that weren't mainstream did flow & felt right, but there wasn't enough of them to make me really reach for this. Those were done like stepping forward & swing back the arms, or swing arms to the side to open up the torso in a fast motion.
Most of all the stretches you'd get from any regular gym class or beginner's yoga dvds & the couple ones I'd never seen before are probably done in any dojo. I'd suggest this dvd for anyone who's flexibility isn't on the same level as mine and/or doesn't like yoga and/or rather have a male martial artist lead rather then a woman or aerobics instructor.
There's a trailer at the distributer site turtlepress.
Customer Reviews:
What a waste of $30 bucks!!! .......2007-06-29
I ordered this DVD along with 2 other similar titles by different authors for my 83 year old Mom who is taking up Tai Chi. The other Tai Chi related titles were really quite good. When we played 'Tai-chi Exercises for Seniors' I was appalled by how sub-amateur the video and audio quality was for a DVD priced at $29.95; what a.... umm... disappointment.
Once you get past the opening text that scrolls for what seems like an eternity, you're presented with the spectacle of an over-lit Mr. Klein speaking in monotone while standing in front of an ugly backdrop. The uninspired, drab "content" then proceeds to drag on for what seems like an eternity but is only 60 minutes.
I noticed the producer is listed as `Artistic Video'.... to say the name is a misnomer is more than an understatement!!!
VERY SLOW PACE.......2007-05-14
I found this video very slow. I would rate myself below average on the mobility chart(a 4 on a scale of 1-10). For me this video was to slow paced. The content was good but just didn't have the challenge needed to keep me motivated. The instructor although very informative was also lacking any motivational skills. It seemed to me that he was very uncomfortable in front of a camera. I used this DVD a few times and opted to return to a beginners tape which was more interesting and more challenging.
Excellent for Beginners.......2006-05-17
This is a very helpful program for seniors interested in learning Tai-chi. First, it provides flexibility and warm-up exercises to prepare the body. Next there are chi-gung exercises to improve the flow of energy through the body. Next the Tai-chi movements are presented one at a time, as exercises so that you can get used to each movement. The basic principles of movement, proper breathing etc. are carefully explained. The last section is a short Tai-chi form, linking the movements that you just learned. I believe it is a great approach to teach Tai-chi. The video quality is also very clear.
Poor picture quality, poor content.......2005-11-13
The picture quality of this video is EXTREMELY poor, very grainy and obviously homemade with no production values. Content is thin and not well presented, there just isnt much here. If it was cheap it might be passable, but his price on this is way out of line. You'd be money ahead with a book.
Contents of this DVD.......2005-06-21
This is a great general exercises program for seniors, beginning with warm ups and stretching and continuing to chi-gung exercises and using Tai-chi movements as exercises. A fourteen movement form is shown, using the movements previously used as exercises. The form is shown from the front and again from the rear. This is a good introduction to Tai-chi and provides a well rounded exercise program. The DVD is manufactured by the "burned" system which 95% of DVD players play. Some of the players manufactured several years ago, which only play movie type DVD's, have trouble with the burned variety. If your player plays DVD-R, it will play this DVD.

Good DVD.......2005-10-26
I've had periodic bouts with back spasms and back pain for the past 6 years. I'm very lazy when it comes to doing excercises. I'd rather play tennis instead. I've had this DVD for over a year but never really did the exercises. As soon as my back got better, I would forget about it or doing any excercise. This past episode of back pain made me watch this DVD again. The DVD is informative and has interviews with back Drs and physical therapists. They attribute back pain to muscle imbalances. The video shows a shortened version of Tai Chi designed to develop the core/stabilizing muscles of the body, along with improving the posture and increasing flexibility. The instructions were very patiently explained and easy to follow. The positions are easy to learn and did not strain my back.
I don't know how long I will keep doing these exercises. However, I do enjoy it. And I think it helps.
Solid, but the talking goes on for a bit too much.......2005-10-20
I buy these DVDs for senior citizens (~75 years old) who are looking to exercise. One of my seniors has back pain, so this was a very intriguing DVD. Overall, Dr. Lam does a good job. But there is way too much talking interspersed throughout and this actually annoys the one senior citizen I got this DVD for. So at least from her, she did not like it. I personally liked his gentle techniques. Overall, I'd hope that someone else produces another DVD for people with back pain (so many of us are out there) that is a bit more movement centered rather than talking centered.

Not Worth It.......2005-07-08
I'm working on recovering from a martial arts injury. The first part of this DVD reminded me of the fun I use to have warming up in the dojo. But it got crazy fast. I may have comparable strength to some men, but don't even dream of being as strong as many guys I know. I'm not going to do lunges with a railroad tie on my shoulders. I don't have a ton of equipment, nor would I want to invest my time, money and energy into all the things he uses in this DVD. I also could not get the DVD to fast forward, which would be the first DVD that I have seen not do this. This guy seems to really want to show off for far too much of the DVD by adding ego boosting clips of breaking things and the such, which does nothing to help me strength train. Martial arts teaches a lot of technique over strength, which he shows neither in the drawn out vanity clips.

This is one Power-Packed video! I've seen the instructor in this video on ESPN and he really means business. He is very dedicated to strengthening his physique to improve his martial art. If you keep up with this guy and his workout routine, I don't think you will have much trouble doing any other type of workout or straight-out fighting. It's one of the best instructional videos I've ever watched.
