Brad Pitt picks up a sword and brings a muscular, brooding presence to the role of Greek warrior Achilles in this spectacular retelling of The Iliad. Orlando Bloom and Diane Kruger play the legendary lovers who plunge the world into war, Eric Bana portrays the prince who dares to confront Achilles, and Peter O'Toole rules Troy as King Priam. Director Wolfgang Petersen recreates a long-ago world of bireme warships, clashing armies, the massive fortress city and the towering Trojan Horse.

Enough is Enough.......2007-09-04
Listen I love a Great Sword & Sandal movie and "Troy" delivered on all parts, but I get tired of all the Special Editions, Super Special Edition, Directors Cut Super Duper Special Edition and so forth. Release the movie with the Unrated Edition and leave it at that. If these additional scenes were so good they should've been in the movie in the 1st.place.
Fantastic Director's Cut.......2007-08-30
I am lucky enough to have seen a screening of the Director's Cut for Troy prior to this DVD's release. I haven't seen the DVD extras, so all I can address here is the movie itself. It is fanstastic - the 40 minutes of additonal material adds meat to the bones of the original. The added footage and new score gives the movie a grander scope and serious gravitas. The colors are richer. There are additional scenes that give you a better insight into the Paris and Helen relationship as well as scenes that give more depth to Odysseus and Priam. I loved it.
I was already a fan of the original, and now cannot recommend this new improved version highly enough.
Seriously... why?.......2007-08-29
Tell me something: were there really a group of hardcore die-hards of "Troy", somewhere in the world, asking Wolfgang Peterson and/or Warner Bros. for a definite edition of this lukewarm toga-fest?
I don't know, maybe it's just me, but even rabid Brad Pitt fans don't seem to really care about this flick - not that it's really a bad film per say. It's just... irrelevant. The best scene in the movie, hands down, is that fight between Pitt and Eric Bana; everything else has been DONE TO DEATH in MUCH BETTER pictures.
So the idea of another 2-disc edition completely puzzle me... or not - let's face: execs at Warner Bros. would sell out their own mothers to make a buck!

Classic Grier.......2005-02-10
I would only recommend this film
because it is an interesting alternative
to the usual scenery in which we are
accustomed to seeing Pam Grier.
Otherwise, it's stock 70's female exploitation,
in which Pam Grier led the pack. Very little plot:
exotic women are kidnapped from foreign locales and
are trained in the arena, where they put on spectacles
for eager, bloodthirsty onlookers. In the end, the fittest
of the fittest, Grier and Markov, are forced to fight each
other. Fight or die, one or both. In the end, they both
rebel and race for freedom while pursued by the emperor's
soldiers.
Not much else to it.
Even nudity isn't a plus here.
It was not until this film
that I noticed how extremely BEAUTIFUL
Margret Markov is. Whatever happened to her?
I think this film is worth the time, but I don't
think you'd want to buy it, unless you already have a
space on your DVD rack for once-viewed movies that will never again see daylight.
This would be one of those movies.
You Gotta Love the 70s -- Action - Nudity - Lust - Catfights.......2004-04-26
Two viscous catfights, three duels in the arena, a gladiatrix revolt, and a running battle through the catacombs as the girls escape make for plenty of action. Plus for Pam Grier fans, a full frontal nudity shower scene. The movie portrays them as playthings for the vicarious bloodlust of Imperial Rome, slave-girl gladiators forced to fight or die in spectacles of barbarous combat. Pam Grier and Margaret Markov head the cast of sweaty sword-and-sandal sisters.
Pure Awful!.......2003-02-11
Yeah I know that this was a "B" movie but this was a chore to watch! I purchased it hoping like every other male to get to see some great nude scenes of Pam Grier and the few nude scenes (only 2 of Pam) are not even worth it. The picture guality for a DVD left much to be desired. There was no plot whatsoever but then again this is a Corman picture. Dolemite movies don't have a plot either but I'd much rather sit through one of his ridiculous attempts at cinema than this stinker. Like Pam Grier? Get Coffy and don't waste your money on this garbage!
A must-be for Pam Grier-Fans.......2001-07-17
Every Pam Grier-Fan must have seen this film. The story is nothing special, but there are some nude-scenes worthseen. There is a shower scene with Pam Grier, in which she shows her pubic hair. If you are not interested in that scene, forget about the film!
Not the greatest Grier..........2001-07-12
If you're looking for a funky sleazy flick like Coffy you've come to the wrong place, as although this sand & sandals "epic" has it's fair quota of sleaze it's just not up to the Jack Hill standards.
Grier is great, as always, and Margret Markov gives good gladiator as well, but the film really starts to sag in the second half when it can't make it's mind up if it wants to be a tounge in cheek catfight movie or a serious Ben Hur style epic.
Good...but not good enough - thumbs sideways.

it's beautifully shot.. the production design was great for the budget... but the film didn't hold my attention..
An Unfortunate Display of Opportunism.......2006-08-15
Anytime the urge rises to be entertained with an escapist film the top of the list becomes one of the Asian martial arts films, films of stunning beauty, breathtaking choreography, handsome actors, and enough legend to make the storyline fascinating, e.g. 'The House of Flying Daggers'. This pathetic film is packaged like those wonder movies and so deludes the public into thinking it is in an equal category. Not even close!
A child is born to a couple informed that their progeny will be a male warrior who has the secrets to read the codebook that contains the key to the power of the universe. The pregnant mother is stabbed by the evil adversaries but the baby lives, 'disappointingly' a girl! The girl Seki is transported via a leaf boat to a blind wise magician who cares for her and teaches her Taiji and Kung Fu, raising her to return to the world and discover life along with her gifts. A family who wants to maintain dominion over China sends two sons (one evil and the other kind) to capture the girl and steal the code to the sacred book. The evil son is accompanied by warriors: the kind son is accompanied by Caucasian Marx brothers. The rest of the story is too simple-minded to discuss.
There are so many errors of judgment in the making of this film, not the least of which is a nebulous and silly script, that disrupt what might have been an honest attempt for Hollywood to make a martial arts film. But the acting is poor, combining Asian actors with non-Asian actors makes both look ridiculous, the special effects are clumsy, and the mood of ancient China is completely destroyed by the computer generated graphics superimposed on the real location of Griffith Park in Los Angeles! The three stooges added to the good warrior's team are so silly that they pass funny into absurd. There is no ending to the movie: instead it feels like the producers just ran out of money. A must miss. Grady Harp, August 06
A total crappy movie!.......2006-07-10
1. Bad acting
2. Thin Plot
3. Poor Scripts
and the list goes on. Buy or rent it at your own peril.
worst movie i've ever seen.......2006-06-23
i rented this movie with the expectation of a great asian film: well-choreographed martial arts, beautifully shot scenes, and a good storyline
boy, was i ever disappointed, maybe i was expecting too much, considering its a low budget independent film but nothing about the movie was good except for the summary in the back of dvd case!
the acting was terrible! not one of the actors could act, which made the whole film laughable and the martial arts was slow, with a few (let me stress *few*) added wire scenes obviously trying to copy from other great asian films to try to make it look authentic
halfway through the movie (after much discussion between my boyfriend and i to try to return the movie to the rental place but deciding it was too late), i put on the director's commentary, just to see why the directors actually thought their movie was even worth making; i was amazed to hear them actually saying good things about the movie!
i watched a little bit of the "making of" in curiousity; when i got to the part of the main character, seiki, saying how she loved her character b/c it provided range for her acting, i finally turned off the movie in amusement, amazement, and yes, even pity, that she would even think that
you can't make a foo yung without breaking eggs.......2006-02-23
This looked like a good idea at the time when I rented it. The story looked good replete with Asian actors and not animation. The proof of the pudding lies in the eating however, and in this case gave me some indigestion.
Clearly of asian origin this is low budget hollywood at it's worst. Trying to mimic Martian Arts movies on the cheap is not the best idea anybody ever had and coming up with a lame storyline does not help either. The characters are mere cardboard replicas of their former selves and I found it infuriating that the wise sorcerer kept refering to the grown woman as my child.
I found the movie to be over the top moralising painting dilemmas with spray paint rather than calligraphy brushes. While the output of Hong Kong can beat the world in silliness and stunts they do have the edge on the delicate treatment of their myths. This ham fisted treatment shot in the Hollywood foothills as as much finesse as a Terminator movie. It is too long, boring and predictable with such a lame ending, not to mention the silly boat which looks so fake.
It was worth a try but I think the producers should have quit whilst they were still behind.

A historically accurate look at the gladiators of ancient Rome is presented in this documentary filmed mostly in Rome and at the famed ruins of Pompei. The roots of gladiatorial combat is traced to the harshness of Roman culture, and how fighting between slaves went from casual attractions in town squares to enormous spectacles in specially built arenas throughout the Roman empire is explained by historians. Much of what we know about gladiators emerged from clues found when the buried Roman city of Pompei was excavated and carefully examined, and drawings of gladiators found on walls in the ancient city are shown. The Roman gladiators became wildly popular cult figures, managed by businessmen and chased by what today we'd call groupies. The "sport" of combat became increasingly violent, with each successive emperor raising the stakes until there were literally hundreds of people in bloody spectacles staged for the entertainment of a screaming crowd. Using films of scholars who faithfully reenact the roles of gladiators, as well as stock footage from Hollywood productions, this documentary provides a fairly comprehensive introduction to how gladiators lived, fought, and died. --Robert J. McNamara
Description
The Roman Colosseum was the setting for more terror, agony and horror than has ever been witnessed anywhere. Emperor Trajan gave one set of games that lasted 122 days, during which 11,000 people and 10,000 wild beasts were killed. Often the fresh blood of gladiators was used as a cure for epilepsy. It was also considered a good luck charm for brides-to-be to dip their combs in gladiator's blood. Who were the gladiators? Where did they come from? How did they live? This fascinating video follows gladiators through their training, choice of costumes, weapons and style of combat to their rise to stardom and their inevitable violent death. So popular did some gladiators become that many Roman women were prepared to give anything to meet and be with the idol they worshiped. A compelling video insight into the violent, deadly world of the gladiators. Great Video For Learning about Gladiators.......2006-11-22
As a high school teacher, I found that this video passes the basic test of an 'educational' video--it informs and entertains. My freshmen enjoyed it and stayed focused. The information is accurate and presented in an interesting and coherent manner. Good use is made of Hollywood archival footage as well as live shots from a school in northern Italy devoted to recreating the lives of gladiators down to the smallest detail. Backed by concise background information on the Roman Republic and Empire. It would also be of interest to anyone with an interest in the Roman Empire, and good background for such Hollywood films as Spartacus and Gladiator. Recommended. 4 and a half stars.
To Endure Being Burned, Bound, Beaten And Slain By The Sword.......2005-11-08
That was the notorious oath of the gladiator. Documentaries such as this offering always provide such a mind-opening window into a subject of acquired taste, they're severely valuable. As a matter of fact, programs like this, and also its like-minded brethren, continually air on the Discovery network of monopolized channels up to this late day, eliminating any reason to still buy this dvd and/or vhs.
Firstly, the unqualified and skewed perspective of the purported Amazon.com reviewer's editorial is plainly incorrect, and needs to be righted. The original roots of Gladiatorism actually stem from Etruscan origins, directly contrary to Amazon.com's self-righteous reviewer's, disrespectable and disappointing claim of it coming from "casual attractions in town squares". The Etruscans, whose name is derived from the ancient geographical region of Etruria, produced the same-named people who would be the forefathers, and then stewards of all things Roman, seeing as how at the start of their civilization, Romans stole excessive aspects of Etrurian life, after deposing of them by the catalyst for their revolution, which was the murder of Lucretia. But, with my additional, free-of-charge information, I've digressed. At the funeral of some important, societal figure in Etruscan life, the Etruscans would perversely stage sadistic "gladiatorial" games--consisting of only 2 participants at the gladiatorial concept's infancy--in their bloodthirsty distortion of values, which was common in the ancient world. This was done to allegedly "celebrate" the accomplishments of the deceased; i.e. that meant that the more blood that was shed at these games for that deceased person, the more honor was being done to his life.
There's a particularly telling part in this program, one that specifically uses the archaeological evidence of skeletons found in definitively curious positions to establish just one of the many rattling and arcane innuendos surrounding the gladiator. That being, that there apparently was the body of a harshly wealthy noblewoman found--thanks to the preservative pumice of Vesuvius--being shielded under the arm of a preserved gladiator, inside the gladiators' quarters, surrounded by as much as up to 18 gladiators, inside of the building in Pompeii that would serve as their training grounds/housing. Speculation is the one avenue left for one to determine her exact purpose in that suspiciously scandalous association. Reason being, for said scandal, is that in the Roman world, gladiators had a specially stigmatizing libel hung on to them, called infamy. This dictated that in society, they were spat on and outcast as the lowest of the lowest scourges, represented in how they didn't even have citizen status, wherein they couldn't even vote, one of their many disenfranchisements. However, this notoriety had excessive and really unequal perks, as an unfair side effect of how they were labeled as "forbidden". In layman's terms, they were homicidally embellished to "sex god" status, and their sweat was in fact errantly considered as an aphrodisiacal substance. This was the contention of the woman's presence, that the program makes, for her being exclusively interred in the quarters of 18 robust men.
Another disturbing facet of information is the decidedly bloodlusting rage that all Romans, from all walks of Roman life (which, realistically, included only 2 definite divisions: 5% rich, the crushing rest of the populus 95% ghoulishly impoverished) barbarically lusted for. This was the brutal relentlessness of the frequency with which that the fated Death Matches were put on, and also the genocidally beastly number of the casualties. Since in Ancient Rome every other day was a state-oppressed "holiday", this half of the time in the year was unscrupulously misused to stage the most sensationalistic, propaganda-based games, whose exclusive, planned function was to, cunningly, dupe the masses of Rome into feeling "alleviated" of their everyday worries. Worries that stemmed from living in a conclusively brutal ancient world where people's life expectancy was seriously low, and, adding insult to injury, where the majority were living in the poorest of squalor. This was the callous and unrighteous irony of what the morally twisted early civilizations misappropriated to feel better about themselves: to simply punish worse atrocities on others.
These are only some of the exorbitant, educational enlightenments that this hour-long window into this subject offers. These programs that are produced, from the Discovery monopoly of like channels all taken over by one managing group, are so vibrant and lush that they bring alive the theme being documented.
Very Irritating Flickering Scenes.......2002-05-29
This is the WORST DVD I ever bought technically! The movie excerpts are from clippings from old films and the clarity is beyond recognition. I find the excerpts very irritating. They were a lot of flickering (as if you are watching a movie or television show using an old television set or your set back to the 1950's when the frame of the TV screen keeps on flickering continuously until the screen stabilizes). The running time is actually more or less an hour and not 90 minutes as advertised. The special features are not really special anymore because they were just repeats of the main feature. You will realize that you will watching the same scenes a couple of times. Some scenes are shown more than five times just to stretch the time. Do not waste your money with this DVD. I wasted mine! This is not a DVD quality. The quality of the silent movies are much better!
The grim reality behind the Hollywood spectacle.......2001-05-03
I thought this video was an excellent documentary, which should be viewed alongside the recent Academy Award winning movie. This documentary helps one really understand the times portrayed in the movie. I thorougly recommend this video.
Just the facts , please.......2001-04-30
While I found this DVD to be very well produce as far as special effects are concerned, I aslo found several of the statements made by the narrator to be suspect at best. For instance the narrator states that corporations owned most of the chariots used in the Circus Maximus to race. I have read quite a lot about the Roman Empire and nowhere have I ever read any information which stated the existence of any corporations in ancient Rome. I also found the weapons which the actors used in the reenactments to be very cheesy indeed. The swords looked like they were cut out sheet metal to look like swords. They had no edge on the blades at all. The narrator (David Hemmings) was also very hard to understand at times due to the raspy quality of his voice. I think the choice of narrator was a mistake. On the postive side the documentary made good use of the facts about gladiators which has been uncovered by the archaelogical finds at Pompei and had several experts providing information through out the DVD.

Complete waste of time.......2006-08-06
I was really looking forward to seeing this movie, as I'm quite a fan of Full Moon pictures. A lot of them are very entertaining (Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity, Hideous, Shrieker, Crash And Burn, Jigsaw, etc). However, this one is just plain crap. It's about some kids who are hiking through the woods, and one of them stumbles across a train tunnel which has supposedly been there for thousands of years. Inside he finds the mummified corpse of Demonicus. He puts on the gladiator's helmet, is overcome by the spirit of Demonicus, and goes around killing the other kids. The guy who plays Demonicus might be in fairly good shape for a college baseball player, but as a gladiator, he looks ridiculous. He's just too skinny, and he runs like a girl. The other characters aren't really that bad, they're vaguely likable, but the script is what really drags this thing down. Half of the dialogue is utter nonsense. People are constantly saying things that don't even make sense, and it gets really annoying. I could stand the boredom of watching some vaguely likable people walking around in the woods, but when they're talking nonsense I have to wonder why I'm wasting my time.
It might have helped if there was some T&A, which you usually get with a Full Moon picture, but there isn't any. Overall, this thing needed a very thorough rewrite of the script. In the director's commentary track, he mentions that the writer refused to put her name on the movie because she wasn't happy with the script, and I can certainly see why. He keeps talking about how this was an early draft of the script, they got rid of the final version because some actress didn't like what was done with her character or something. I kept flipping over to the commentary track after every unintentional bit of stupidity, just to see what the director had to say, but he was oblivious to everything. I got the impression that, considering the budget and time constraints, he was really happy to have something - anything - on film that he could call a movie, and thereby receive his paycheck.
THIS IS PRETTY BAD.......2004-04-11
I have always enjoyed a truly good cheesy B movie...but DEMONICUS is so badly done that it's hard to find anything of merit. It's pretty low even for Full Moon standards. Filmed in the Angeles National Forest, it's a pale comparison to the Italian alps. Director Jay Woehl (?) offers little in the ways of suspense, and the cast...well, I don't know where they found them, but acting is not their forte. Even Gregory Lee Kenyon, the studly dude who plays the possessed gladiator, has little energy, and the one "sword fight" is so badly staged, it's laughable...and it was choreographed by said G L Kenyon. The gore is even so fake it's not gory; the special effects, if that's what you'd call them, are prehistoric compared to even the gladiator movies of the sixties. So, I would avoid this movie, unless you want to rent it on a night you're having your worst enemies over. Definitely, I don't think I'd buy it...unless for a penny at a yard sale. Why the two stars? I guess because I finished watching it?
Cheesy But Delightful.......2004-02-07
My friend and I rent B-movies just so we can rip on them, and this movie was a perfect oppourtunity for us to have a few good laughs. First of all, it starts out with some co-ed wondering into an ominous cave with a inconspicuous man-made cement arch marking the entrance. The guy finds this petrified corpse and suddenly becomes an archaeologist with such quotes as "Perfectly preserved" despite the 'open' cave entrance, and "This must be a thousand years old' ; c'mon, what college do these kids go to? Anyway, the kid decides to play dress up and puts on the helmet worn by the corpse... What the heck.. He then becomes possessed by the spirit named Demonicus.. Wow. Thusly beginning his scene where he messes around with all the weapons, and goes out to kill his girlfriend and his other friends.
There were so many filming mistakes made in this movie, It's not even funny. Example; as Demonicus comes trotting down the road screaming some mock latin wielding a sword, a pair of his friends stand there dumbfounded as they try to decipher what he his saying. Only to figure it out moments before he dismembers them with a blunt plastic sword purchased at Wal-Mart. And the kicker is, the blonde chick who probably makes porn as a side-job is the one who figures out what he is saying..
I also enjoyed the part where the other couple are 'getting jiggy with it' under the covers in the tent, then they hear a noise. The guy is naked, he decides to get out and check it out. It shows him exiting the tent absolutely nude, then they cut to outside where it shows him exiting the tent FULLY CLOTHED. Whoops, looks like the lazy editor was to busy digging out the cheese doodle wedged beneath the couch to catch that blooper.
The same guy then finishes the movie by cursing everything that he walks by, "F'ing trees, f'ing Demonicus, f'ing air". Wow wordsworth, don't hurt yourself there.
My friends and I had a wonderful time making fun of this movie, and that's the only reason why I would recommend renting this. If you have a dry sense of humor and enjoy B-movies, then you should check out Demonicus.
What A Waste of the worlds time.......2003-12-27
If amazon did a 0 then this would score that, what a waste of my time, halfway through I took my dog for a walk, it was that bad, what a blooming waste of my time.
Now I have to admit, the babes were quite good, and the main actor did what he could with a script they got off a cereal box packet, but overall it rated a 0, and I am being kind giving it a one star.
Wow.......2003-06-01
Wow...I don't know what to say. My friends rented this one night hoping for something good. We didn't know what we were getting ourselves into. Never before has every facet of a movie been so bad. Usually, one could find one or two aspects that a are redeeming about a movie. Unfortunately, Demonicus has none. Congratulations to those who made this: they've succeeded at failing.

Good series, not great but pretty good.......2006-03-31
I purchased this series because i heard some of the more historically accurate re-enactment groups participated in it. My only gripe was that they used the romano-british (late roman) group for the attila the hun series! Although the roman defenders may have been closer to those facing attila (romano-gallic army) attila forces were a little harder to accept. They tried to compensate by wearing hun hats and using more scale and lamallar armors (used by the romano british as well since the late roman army adopted horse archer bows, tactics, armor, etc into its ranks). Basically it was the romano british group fighting itself...
Overall it was well done with the celts, zulu, spartans, sioux and ninja being the strong episodes. I especially enjoyed the celts (makes you wonder if the celts, by attacking rome itself, were in part responsible for the creation of the army that would come back to conquer them), sioux (good demonsatration of cooing) and zulu. With most of the series you get alot of shots of feet or parts of warriors going by instead of the overall picture of whats going on which can be annoying after awhile. i guess to make the most out of what they had. They did not spare the realites of the time either some of which are very harsh and to some shocking. computer animation is primitive at best but at least its there.
Good series!
excellent documentry series.......2005-05-26
Unfortunately a number of people have placed bad reviews for a completely unrelated movie on this listing. I gave it five stars to compensate for this, but honestly I would not have anything negative to say anyway (except perhaps that I wish the episodes where longer and that they made more of them). All the episodes are masterfully crafted and engrossing. The use of a singluar narrative following one character while overviewing their entire warrior culture was a great idea. It personolizes otherwise abstract historical occasions and gives you a feeling for what it would have really been like. A few episodes do stick out, such as "The Spartans" because it's simply such a great and inspiring story, and "The Ninja" (just because ninjas are so bloody cool). I hate to be a boring cliche, but this series is indeed both educational and entertaining. You won't be disappointed.
DON'T LET THE TITLE ENTICE YOU.......2005-01-26
...because the ANCIENT WARRIORS have little to do in this truly terrible movie. Former bodybuilder Franco Columbu has managed to make Arnold Schwarzenegger look like Laurence Olivier. His "performance" is one of the worst acting leads on celluloid. He plays a mercenary whose father is killed during a botched operation. A year later, he moans around the house about his father's death and volunteers at a school for retarded children, where his daughter is one of the students. Under the inept direction of Walter von Huene, this poor young lass comes across as comical; whether she's truly retarded or not, the script doesn't seem to want to do anything but exploit her "gift." Anyway, Columbu finds out that a local mining operation is really a covert operation for the making of chemical warfare, under the auspices of long time bad man Richard Lynch. Lynch, who is usually a capable performer, spends most of his time coughing into a hanky, as he has some kind of mysterious disease that is going to kill him. Enter the "ancient warrior" theme: supposedly they have some magic potion that will cure him but it's buried somewhere deep in the mines. His son, played by Andy Mackenzie, tries hard to be a Mike or Kirk Douglas clone but only manages to come across as badass and bad actor. A chunky Daniel Baldwin plays Columbu's best friend and fellow mercenary who calls the boys (and girl) together to help Franco stop the nefarious Lynch and Mackenzie. Iris Peynado looking like the latest release from a dog kennel plays the vixenish, somewhat asexual psychic who is aiding Lynch. The movie moves at an incredibly lethargic pace, the fight scenes are staged very amateurishly and the whole thing is really an embarassment to all involved. I don't think ancient warriors themselves could have saved this catastrophic misfire.
A waste of plastic and metal...Please remember to recycle........2004-07-17
This film is poorly edited, the transfer to DVD is poor, and the actual picture is grainy - like they used cheap film to make it. The story is about a mercenary who is after another mercenary who killed his father; he is really bad because he is messing with chemical weapons and ancient European tombs (which explains the title).
Don't waste a minute watching this.
