After a foolproof scam turns sour, Jimmy the Saint (a soulful but miscast Andy Garcia, who mainly acts with his hair) and his hard-bitten crew must put their various sordid affairs in order before facing their final bloody curtain call. It's not nearly as clever as it thinks it is, but this terminally wise-ass (and extremely violent) caper flick is still one of the better post-Tarantino crime opuses, with some sharp dialogue, a scenery-chewing Christopher Walken (as a paraplegic archcriminal), and unhinged performances by Treat Williams and the obsequious Steve Buscemi that must be seen to be (dis)believed. Neophyte scripter Scott Rosenberg would later pen hipper-than-thou scripts for Beautiful Girls, Con Air, and Armageddon, while director Gary Fleder moved on to the somewhat more reputable Kiss the Girls. The tongue-twisting title is from a Warren Zevon song. --Andrew Wright

5 out of 5 stars Don't ask for the "buckwheat" pancakes..........2007-06-16

See the movie, and you'll understand the reference. An often overlooked movie that has a lot of special acting roles. A MUST see for any one who likes crime/gang/ action/drama/love movies. Wonderful work by A Garcia, and Chris Walken is memorably evil as the "Man with the Plan". All around great flick - you'll be quoting lines from this one for a while, and Gabrielle Anwar - wow! "Boat Drinks" for all!

4 out of 5 stars Love it, Love it, Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-08

Bought this movie after renting it. Can't say enough good things about it. My favorite actor (Andy Garcia) is in it. Highly recommend this movie to all the true Andy Garcia fans out there! Interesting language and twists during the entire movie. I watch it over and over again. Never get tired of it. Once you've seen it, you'll want to own it.

5 out of 5 stars Below the Radar.......2007-03-08

Many people have never seen or heard of this movie, but it's great with a killer cast.

4 out of 5 stars Give it a name...why doncha?.......2006-10-02

In spite of some flashy, occasionally overused language (e.g., "give it a name" meaning tell it like it is), this is a better than average crime film that manages to simultaneously make some fun of crime films. For example, the "mob boss" is called, I kid you not, The Man with the Plan. One character's monicker is, another real thing not made up (i.e., I myself am not making this up), Critical Bill. And like that.

So what we got here is a somewhat formulaic plot. OK, more than somewhat. The crime, the, you know, doesn't go as planned kinda thing, the repercussions, etc. But you also have something very unexpected and that is a romance that's not stupid or schlocky, but that actually makes you feel something. The main character, played by Andy Garcia--Jimmy the Saint--falls hard for the lead female (Gabrielle Anwar, she of "Scent of a Woman" fame) and the ensuing romance is truly heartfelt. Hmmmm.. a different spin on a crime film. Yes it is.

Even though the characters are kinda stock ones, it's still fun to watch them go through their paces 'cause they're good at it--Christopher Lloyd, Treat Williams (anybody ever figure out how he got that first name?), Christopher Walken, Jack Warden, William Forsythe, and to top it off, the great Steve Buscemi as contract killer (get this) "Mr. Shush". (Now that's what I call giving it a name).

So the quirkiness, the pure romance, and the acting chops all save this from being another completely humdrum entry in the post-Tarantino crime film glut. Much better than you might think...

1 out of 5 stars I'm Godzilla and you're Tokyo.......2006-05-02

That is the only good line in this entire movie, in part because it describes the relationship between the movie and you, the gentle viewer. You would think this film might be good, just due to the eclectic list of actors (Jack Warden! Christopher Walken! Treat Williams! That guy from "Hudsucker Proxy"!). But you would be so, so wrong.

"Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead" badly wants to be "Reservoir Dogs" or "Pulp Fiction." Indeed, you can compare this movie to "Reservoir Dogs" on a macro level, like the screenwriter obviously did. Getting some criminals together at some dive restaurant and assembling a gang for a job? Check. Job goes wrong in the middle of the movie? Check. Crazy guy on the crew? Check. The team has to deal with the consequences of their failure? Check. Hey, all that the writer forgot to check off on his list was interesting dialogue, plot, and some sense of style. The screenplay lies there like some dude that got whacked, and completely wastes the talent of the cast. The dialogue and pacing are atrocious, but who needs pacing when you never get anywhere plotwise?

For a movie that references the city of Denver in the title, this movie has less of a sense of place than a TV sitcom. You never get the feeling you're in Denver, or anywhere in particular for that matter. Even the expensive yet pointless crane shot in the very first scene (a warning sign from frame 1 of this garbage) doesn't provide any kind of "Denverness" to this movie.

This is by far the worst of the Tarantino clones of the 90s. Truly awful in every way, it is a film to be avoided at all costs. If you're in the video store on Friday night and this is all that's left, it's a sign that you should turn off the TV that night and go to the pub instead.

At the height of urban paranoia and the birth of survivalist movement in the 1980s, director Michael Ritchie decided to team Robin Williams and Walter Matthau. Talk about an odd couple; yet it actually might have worked, with Matthau's hang-dog deadpan and Williams's manic energy, were it not for a limp script by Michael Leeson. Williams and Matthau play two victims of Reaganomics, unemployed acquaintances who witness a robbery and identify one of the participants to the police, an act that turns them into targets for the robber in question, who comes looking for them. Williams's response: become a one-man arsenal and join a training camp for militant survivalists. But the comedy is neither sharp enough nor sufficiently smart to pull it off; Matthau is the calm center while Williams's comedy rockets all around him, to surprisingly little effect. --Marshall Fine

2 out of 5 stars What kind of man gives cigarettes to trees?.......2006-05-28

As I watched The Survivors, I couldn't help but wonder what was going through the mind of director Michael Ritchie when he was presented with the script. Outside of the enormous gaps in plot and development, he had to see some humor in it somewhere to cast two direct opposites of the comedy spectrum to helm this project. There had to be a mission or a reason in Ritchie's mind when he decided that Robin Williams, a fast-talking comedian that can sometimes be uncontrollable, and Walter Matthau, a slow-methodical comedian that appeals to the "every man", would be his key players. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall during this opening meeting because this little fly would have spoken up and mentioned that this pairing would doom the script, and possibly put a black mark on both of these actor's careers. I wouldn't just stop there, I would tear this film to pieces trying to get others to explain to me the subsequent ending and missing tone. The only element that I would be content with would be the casting of Jerry Reed, who honestly brought some humor and intelligence to this scarred film. The Survivors was not a film, but instead an attempt to allow two comedians the opportunity to express themselves coupled with heavy firepower. Nothing more, nothing less.

Could somebody, anybody, please help me out with the story surrounding The Survivors? From the zigzag opening centered around the parrot and Robin Williams' job to the incident at Matthau's gas station (a plot point never mentioned or concluded), Ritchie spends no time developing anything. His choice of direction is simply allow Williams to be as "zany" as possible and see how Matthau reacts to it. If it weren't for Jerry Reed this film would have been nearly an hour and a half of forced jokes, gunshots, and awkward moments. The story was pointless. In most instances I can find bits and pieces of a story which keeps my attention allowing me to be curious about how the ending will resolve itself. For there to be this resolution, there has to be a conflict. Even a senior in high school can figure that out, but oddly enough, there is no conflict in The Survivors. Ritchie attempts to create one with the entire "survival of the fittest" byline, but even that idea is never fully announced. I felt like a Ping-Pong ball in this film, constantly going back and forth between Williams and Matthau hoping that I would land on something that scored a point, but alas, this was the game that would never end. Ritchie even takes us into the wilderness in attempts to bring more laughs and eventually draw an ending, but again, nothing happens. Nothing is explained, nothing is developed, nothing is linear. Williams goes into the woods to be trained in survival, yet for the amount of time he was there it was as if he was unable to learn anything. Also, where did he get the funds to buy the house out in the woods? Then, without giving anything away, there was that pathetic ending. WHAT HAPPENED? I use big words there because there was not one iota of a conclusion. Enemies became friends, friends became enemies, and before words could be spoken the ending credits appeared. Ritchie obviously didn't have an ending and needed to quickly wrap it up, and it was very obvious.

I would like to announce this here, but I believe Michael Ritchie could not even handle the simplest of tasks with this film. The direction was horrible because Ritchie could not control his actors. It was obvious as you watched Williams and Matthau on screen that there were getting no advice or pointers from the man behind the camera. Ritchie didn't stop Williams during his rants (which at times were never relevant to the film) and did not help Matthau react to the insanity that Williams was bringing to the table. Even if you have a feeble story (such as this), you can possibly save the film with the actors. Ritchie could not save this film. What should have been the best part of this film was easily the most painful to watch. Williams and Matthau, in this critic's eye, possibly could be ranked as the WORST comic pairing in cinema. Matthau's form of comedy is completely, if not 100%, different to Williams' shenanigans. While in some film cases this would work to a movie's advantage, for The Survivors, it did not. There were no characters for these two comedians to enter into. I sat during the entire hour and a half watching Robin Williams be Robin Williams and the same for Walter Matthau. I could not see any semblance of a character between the two of them. Both seemed to jump from one trait to the next. Neither seemed to have a complete hold or knowledge of who they were attempting to portray. This is half due to the flimsy story, but mainly I place the blame on Ritchie. With Williams and Matthau at the helm, this had the beginnings of a hilarious possible gut-busting, laugh-out-loud comedy that would be a staple in the film community, but Ritchie, in my eyes, could not handle it. He relied to heavily on his actor's comic "personas" instead of actually building characters for them.

Overall, this was a very sad excuse for a film. I have read some other reviews that speak highly of the comedy in this film while do speak similarly of the lacking story, but for me everything was broken. There were no characters, there was no direction, there was obviously no story, and our two central actors didn't work for their money, but just read through their lines and gave a measly 30% to the final product. The only plus I give this film is the accomplishment of Jerry Reed. He was worth watching. The scene between his wife and I was nearly close to perfection. I think it was the only time that I found myself chuckling through this entire film. Ritchie could not handle this film and in the end The Survivors is probably a film that neither Williams or Matthau wants to remember. I know I am trying to forget it as we speak!

5 out of 5 stars Killing us with laughter.......2005-09-27

Both Robin Williams and Walter Matthau lose their jobs and then meet by chance in a restaurant; while there they become victims of a robbery attempt but scare the robber away. Williams goes crazy, arms himself to the teeth, and then joins a mercenary survival war school in the woods of Vermont. The robber wants to get rid of both Williams and Matthau for fear they can identify him, only Williams challenges him to a showdown in the snow in Vermont.

It's a wonderful romp, with the understated Matthau a perfect foil for Williams's off-the-wall zaniness. The movie falters somewhat in the woods of Vermont, with the anti-vigilante message becoming overly obtrusive, but there's enough hilarity to overlook it. A very funny movie. Definitely worth a watch.

5 out of 5 stars NO HONOR AMONG THESE THIEVES.......2006-08-22

I personally liked this film. Director Jennifer Leitzes did an excellent job of bringing in just enough elements into this wonderfully obscure film to keep it original, and from becoming bloated like so many other crime-dramas. The film stars Clair [Kyra Sedgwick] as the long time hitwoman-confidant of the crime boss known simply as 'The Boss' [Robbie Coltrane]. Her partner in this group of professional hitmen is an ailing Nick [Stanley Tucci] aptly portrayed I might add.

Problems arise when the assistant to "The Boss" portrayed by [Philip Seymour Hoffman] attempts to divide the hitmen; for plans of his own, and he does this by planting seeds of doubt into the Boss's head about Clair and Nick. Things do not go well for this hitman-duo when the Bosses son Jimmy [Ethan Embry] is killed while under the care of Clair. This starts a roller-coaster shoot-out with the other hitmen, where loyalties and trust become twisted. Unknown to 'The Boss, his assistant, Hoffman, is scheming behind his back. This crime-drama is terrifically written, and the characters in the film--especially Kyra Sedgwick give outsatanding performances. I highly recommend this film.

5 out of 5 stars More people need to see this........2004-07-23

Aside from its refreshingly stripped-down plot, MONTANA is a pretty complex film. I say this because it works on so many levels, and is essentially impossible to pigeonhole stylistically. I suppose it's a crime drama more than anything else, but it's also hilarious, very violent, and not without a healthy dose of action fireworks.

Kyra Sedgewick is amazing as Claire, the only female part of a syndicate of hitmen. Her partner and possible love interest is terminally ill Nick (also played to perfection by Stanley Tucci). In charge of the whole operation is The Boss (Robbie Coltrane), and his assistant, Duncan (Philip Seymour Hoffman). When the Boss's mistress, Kitty (Robin Tunney) runs off, he sends Claire and his son, Jimmy (Ethan Embry), to go retrieve her. Once they find her, Jimmy attempts to rape her, and with nothing else to lose, Kitty shoots him in the head. This, of course, puts Claire in a very bad position.

Every aspect of this film is great. The screenplay (by Erich and Jon Hoeber) is witty, quick, very real, and devoid of convention. Leitzes's direction is down-to-earth, but hardly amateurish, and again, lacking any indie arrogance or MTV trickery. And you couldn't ask for a better group of actors -- there's a real chemistry there.

MONTANA is not going to change your life, but it is a truly exceptional film, and should certainly be unearthed from obscurity.

5 out of 5 stars You gotta love it.......2004-05-02

It is easy to see why this movie has with DVD reached cult status. It is John Woo perfect on the conflict between loyalty and integrity, with only two-thirds of the blood. "I love bananas because they have no bones and I hate peaches, because they have stones" - you gotta love it.

3 out of 5 stars What about the soundtrack?.......2004-01-01

I wish if someone could help me telling me the names of the groups (or musicians) who make the soundtrack of this movie, because I found it real great.
Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars It's beautifull........2003-11-21

I liked the laid back feel it has.
What I remember most about the movie is the couple and their relationship. I like them because they are witty and strong, and they love each other in a sweet, loyal way that is the total opposite of the saccharine, phony romances I keep seeing in Hollywood films. They are grown-ups and they look like real people and they're charismatic individuals. That's a very needed break from all the bratty, spoiled silly, no-brain teenage movies the movie industry tries (to no avail) to force down my throat.
If it were a samurai movie or something, placed in such an alien and exotic place that your moral code somehow doesn't apply anymore, I wouldn't wonder "Why am I rooting and feeling for a couple or payed assassins?" But although it is placed in our world and our time it's like it's another dimension where it's OK for criminals to be talking to you about morals. They make me want to believe, which just might be the best compliment one can pay to a movie.
I would definitely buy it. And the boss is the giant in Harry Potter.

The beautiful and frequently topless Makiko Kuno plays an assassin raised by a deviant blind priest to be a warrior of God. But the killings are political, the priest works for the mob and two magazine photographers stumble across the whole mess. One gets killed, the other escapes only to be stalked by the beautiful assassin. The plot is pretty familiar and the film is shot in the style common to Japanese movies of this type: lots of monochrome, cool blues and bled out greens to suggest an arid, sterile moral wasteland. The blend of Gonin-esque ultraviolence and Skinemax gratuitous nudity makes it entertaining, though on a slightly silly level. And Kuno, in tight mini skirts and high heels, packing heat... Ouch!

She's a lawyer. He's a cop. Some former KGB-types with a wide variety of slippery accents and enough sophisticated technological surveillance gadgets to make one wonder how the Soviet Union could have possibly failed, want her dead. The cop (William Baldwin) is the only man who can save her. It helps that the high-powered attorney is played by Cindy Crawford, who gives new meaning to the phrase "habeas corpus." So the plot doesn't make any sense: First they try to kill her, no questions asked. Then they capture her and spill their guts about all the details of their nefarious plan. But logic is not what Fair Game is about. It's about explosions, car crashes, and more explosions. The only pauses in the action are for showers (one for Baldwin, two for Crawford) and a change of clothing (Crawford slips out of a tight T-shirt into an even tighter tank top). The best feature of the DVD is the addition of a Gallic track. With very little actual sex in the movie, having the main characters conversing in French definitely adds some sauciness to the dialogue scenes. --Richard Natale

3 out of 5 stars Fair Game DVD.......2007-05-13

The movie itself is what I expected. What I didn't expect was that the movie is only available in full screen. There is no widescreen for this movie. I did not know this going into the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars stop and shop.......2006-09-02

i have been known to like what some people consider to be bad movies, and this movie is not exactly casablanca, but i have to say i watch it alot, and i like it. I personally think the scene where he calls the store is hysterical. I would tell other people to watch it, but it is not for all.

3 out of 5 stars Better than I expected after reading the reviews.......2006-08-06

Lots of explosions, a dodgy plot, plenty of electronic gadgets which required a certain amount of blind faith to believe in and a bit of sex (lovely!!!) albeit at an inappropriate moment and interrupted before consumation by the KGB (I hate them). The acting was passable except for that of the KGB which was pretty pathetic but all in all, it wasn't as bad as it was painted. I shall watch it again one day now I have bought it.

1 out of 5 stars AWFUL!!!!.......2005-08-08

I was extremely bored one day and happened to find this DVD lying around. From the opening scene, (was that a bullet, piece of glass, firecracker? she should have just been mugged or something. some better excuse to get her to the police station) I knew I was going to have to endure some low-class acting and that was exactly what it turned out to be. Crawford could have been more believable as a porn star than as a lawyer in the movie. She overacted...or is underacted...and leaves me wondering how on earth this movie went through all the stages that a movie has to go through before it is finally released. The original plot was ok except a bit weak. the fact that the lawyer wanted a boat to go to a client did not warrant the massive manhunt that followed leading to the death of several cops, only to capture her, bore the audience with their explanations and keep her alive long enough for her cop-friend to rescue her.

The sex scene was so ill timed, or am I naive to think that just a minute after surviving shoot-outs, major car crashes and explosions, jumping onto a moving train, jumping off a car that explodes seconds after, someone can immediately be that turned on and have sex?? Baldwin was not too bad except I expected more remorse and grief from a man who had just lost a couple of workmates, a best friend and a cousin in a matter of hours but still managed to crack jokes and be extremely horny.

The star of the movie was Selma Hayek whom we get to see in 2 scenes. Only problem is we don't know why the hell she is so upset with her boyyfriend??????????????

Don't waste your time and money on this one folks! PLEASE!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Just No Brainer Action.......2005-03-15

Critics slam this because they try to compare it to "Witness", "The Client" or some other movie with better actors and a more plausible storyline. Personally I think Baldwin and Crawford have a chemistry and it and the screenplay works. Just go into it without any preconceptions and you will probably find it a decent action movie. Fair acting, great special effects, and good music make this worth checking out.

When a civil lawyer played by Crawford demands her client get a ship in international waters, she puts herself on the hitlist of a group of Ex-KGB assassins. Using high tech equipment they track her every move and attempt to kill her. In steps a cop played by Baldwin to try and help her survive long enough to get into witness protection. He almost single handedly takes out all the Russian terrorists. Good picture and sound quality but no extras. I picked it up for a little more than the cost of a rental.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time and money please........2006-11-17

I had no expectations for this film. I just wanted a no brainer action with some good looking chics in it. The story while not that bad proved to dissapoint the target market of hetro males when you find out she used to be a guy. Knowing this totally turns me off the female actress. The action was boring and when the end of the movie finally came I breathed a sigh of relief and gave the dvd away and I have certainly not missed it.

4 out of 5 stars Love Beyond the Limits.......2002-06-25

Cheryl is the latest protagonist in the seemingly endless series of "Girls with Guns" imports from Japan. Cheryl is a bodyguard rather than an assassin, although she usually gets to fight lots of other folks who are assassins. Her support network includes Mark, a one-armed bartender and former soldier of fortune; Lucky Ear, a wheelchair-bound techno-geek who's in love with Cheryl; and a female doctor who seems to know many secrets about Cheryl. The doctor provides therapy to Cheryl in the form of sensuous nude massages, during which Cheryl fantasizes, rather incongruously--or so it seems--about men in kickboxing tournaments.

Cheryl's latest assignment is to protect a jewel thief from Hong Kong, who's come to Japan to recover a cache of hidden gems. The bad guys (whoever they are, and it doesn't really matter) have put out a contract on the thief, so Cheryl kicks, punches, and shoots her way through several bloody encounters with various assassins. Naturally, she beats them all, so the opposition ups the ante by calling in the Owl, an allegedly unstoppable killer. It turns out that Cheryl and the Owl have a past history, but it's definitely not what you would expect. Their final encounter is both erotic and sanguinary, in the approved tradition of this intensely formulaic genre.

Better than average, due to the interesting, if improbable, plot twist that drives the final part of the movie.

2 out of 5 stars could have been better.......2007-08-07

the fight scenes are awsome in this movie but it could have been alot better they have some A list actors in this film for it to be dull as it is the plot sucked in a way but the best part of the film was the end the dimestration of the diffrent weapons used.....

5 out of 5 stars Image did it again.......2007-03-20

When I first saw this awesome movie on Drive-In Movie (channel 5) back in the day I liked it. However, it didn't have those familiar Australian voices, it had these new voices on the dubbing. Many Shaw Brother flicks that were made after 1980 had these different U.K. voices, and they sucked big time. It actually affected the acting negatively. Now, Image Entertainment changed all that. It's like a whole new film.

Along with "Master Killer" this is one of Liu Chia-Liang's (Lau Kar-Leung) best. This one also stars his half-brother Gordon Liu, but Liang (along with his other brother, Liu Chia-Yung a.k.a. Lau Kar-Wing) take on the lead roles. Co-starring are Chu Tieh Wu (the villain from "Jade Claw"), Hsiao Hou, Kara Hui Ying-Hung (both were Liang's students) and the late Fu Sheng. Widescreen, beautiful, crisp picture. Awesome original Chinese track (even includes the English dub), and a bunch of trailers showing the rest of the growing catalogue of Image acquisitions.

I'm not really going to go into the plot because if you're reading this, all you need to know is it's from Shaw Brothers. It takes place during the Boxer Rebellion, and this movie even reveals the hoax of witchcraft, magic and being bullet-proof toward the end. Absolutely amazing martial arts (choreography by the Liu brothers, Hsiao Hou & Ching Chu), especially the fifteen minute end fight, which includes everything from hand-to-hand to the 18 weapons. It also includes the name of the weapon appearing on the screen when one of the Liu brothers use it. Yeah, I know fu, too. I hope this is a sign of things to come from Image Entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars One of Lau Kar Leung's best movies.......2007-01-10

While there are at least 5 or 6 Lau films I would put above this, Legendary Weapons is still a wonderful kung fu film. Let's see, we have Lau Kar Leung himself in a starring role, Lau Kar Wing in a spectacular fight with many different weapons, Kara Kui, Hsiou Hou, and Gordon Liu in a great fighting role. The director manages to live up to the title of the movie and manages to top what you may be thinking of it going in. While it is not one of the most exciting movies ever, the last 30 minutes will absolutely blow you away.

It is also odd seeing Hsiou Hou from Lau's 'Mad Monkey Kung Fu' and 'Cat Vs. Rat' in a serious role. He gets in a couple of moments of comedy but don't expect the norm with him on this one. It is a joy seeing all of Lau's great stars that he brought up in this. Even Fu Sheng has an extended cameo and most fans of his will enjoy seeing him on screen but others will not like his part in the movie.

This release from Image Entertainment is very good. Crystal clear picture quality and great 5.1 and 2 channel sound in the Mandarin dialogue. Many will be very pleased to see an English track on here. All 3 tracks have great sound quality. Unfortunately this release does not have any special features except for trailers. It does not even have the liner notes that the previous Image releases have had. No big deal to me though since I had never seen this wonderful movie. Overall this is an outstanding release. Very nice to see a couple of American DVD companies stepping up to the plate and giving American kung fu movie fans the releases they have been waiting for for a very long time.

3 out of 5 stars Very overrated.......2002-09-18

Not a bad film, with the closing fight being very good. But this is NOT the greatest kung fu film of all time, not by a mile.

5 out of 5 stars Lousy DVD Best Buy Yet of Classic Movie.......2002-04-08

.... buy, buy, buy. Because this is one you should have seen if you're into kung-fu movies, and before the DVD era it wasn't readily available. As always with these classics the hype can be dangerous (you start to expect superhuman feats and whatnot) but keep a realistic mind and this film shouldn't disappoint. It is a Shaw Brothers film; so expect a Shaw Brothers film. A very good one, with very solid performance by Lau Kar-Leung (Liu Chialiang).

The print is dark. The image is brutally cropped at the sides and the audio is dubbed (funny dub, with Kar-Leung speaking a weird accent), but there simply is no widescreen, subtitled print to be seen. One may well come out one day but until then, this disc is as good as it gets. I would take one star off for the ratio/dub but I'll make an exception as this is 18 LEGENDARY WEAPONS.

5 out of 5 stars Best Dolph movie.......2007-07-31

I started to look out for Dolph Lundgren films after I saw this one. But it is my feeling that none other is better than Silent Trigger. Very stylish, very moody, overacted in a grand way.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Ordinary Movie.......2007-06-29

Lundgren plays a sniper sent to assassinate a target with a woman spotter. They meet in a half-built building the night before prepare, reminisce and wait for their target the next day. It seems these two are pretty incompetent they have a history of failed missions. Apparently one of the security guards thinks the woman spotter is pretty alright but he doesn't take rejection too well. She thinks Lundgren is pretty alright and do what comes naturally. But don't look for anything new here because you will be disappointed its pretty much the same as any other movie in this genre.

Some things I found quite strange about this movie are:
1. Why would the organization keep partnering these two when they keep failing missions together?
2. Why would the organization keep giving them second chances every time they fail a mission?
3. I don't think Lundgren is taking this movie seriously he just seems to be modeling that sniper rifle he fires twice and plays around with for the rest of the movie.

This movie is not bad and its not good either its pretty ordinary. Why are Lundgren's movies always so ordinary? This is one of those movies you may put on when your bored or on a raining day and it will keep you occupied for a couple of hours or so and you may watch it a couple of times but its not a movie that you will watch very often. I got this with a big heap of movies I bought off E-Bay and I've had for about 3 years and only watched it 4 times.

3 out of 5 stars Better than expected.......2007-03-01

I tend to have a fairly poor opinion of movies of this sort, meaning inconsequential action movies. This category would include the films of Steven Segal, Jean-Claude van Damme, Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the like. With a few notable exceptions ("The Terminator," for example) these are forgettable time fillers. I was aware Dolph Lundgren made action movies, though I always associate him with his role as the Russian behemoth from "Rocky IV." Little did I realize he is Swedish, not Russian (the name should have been my first clue), is a martial artist and he is reputedly very intelligent; he holds a master's degree in chemical engineering and had a Fulbright Scholarship to go to MIT. Needless to say, I have newfound respect for Mr. Lundgren. Unfortunately, high intelligence does not necessarily always translate into great films. Such is the case with "Silent Trigger," a mostly forgettable tale about an assassin (Lundgren), who has an epiphany, decides he is the bad guy and refuses to shoot a high-profile target. This leads his spotter (played by the marvelous Gina Bellman) to be ordered to dispose of him. We jump forward to another opportunity for assassination, where Shooter and Spotter again encounter one another. I am impressed by some of the cinematography, and the understated, dark atmosphere sometimes resembles a horror or suspense film. The violence is quite bloody and strong in this, which is something to which I am not very accustomed. I primarily watched this to see Gina Bellman, who is so good as Jane on "Coupling." Her physically demanding role here as an assassin is much different, though she is just as likeable. Does Dolph choose roles that do not require him to emote, or is he typecast in these roles? Either way, there isn't much opportunity for him to show his chops here, though we don't go into this film expectin4g as much. The finale is rather satisfying, so I would recommend if you are in the mood for a half-way decent action flick. The DVD offers a good transfer and a few different audio and subtitle options. It is also full screen pan-and-scan, which seems fitting for the caliber of the film.

1 out of 5 stars another failure with Dolph Lundgren.......2004-11-21

Dolph Lundgren (Universal Soldier, Blackjack) plays a man who is hired to take out a primary target and helping him is his old partner, Gina Bellman. Soon things heat up as the two security guards working at the building they are at start to get fiesty and one of them takes drugs and sees spiders and stuff. The 2 are also in a heated romance and get caught in a deadly cat and mouse game of double cross as the agency they are working for want them dead. Another Dolph Lundgren stinker vehicle though Lundgren can't act if his life depended on it. He couldnt pull of He-Man and The Punisher, he can't pull off anything else. Gina Bellman is hot but her acting is horrible as well as the rest of the cast. There's nothing like being hired to kill people and then have sex. Directed by Russell Mulcahy (Highlander). Bottom line is this actioner is a borefest.

5 out of 5 stars Well done!.......2004-07-10

This is probably the best dolph lundgren movie ever made. it has everything. you nee to see it.

It's not written or directed by John Cassavetes, but Elaine May's eclectic portrait of two petty, middle-aged goodfellas on the streets of Philadelphia is electrified by the same nervous energy and volatile personalities of Cassavetes's best work. Nicky (Cassavetes), a trembling wreck convinced there's a contract out on his life, calls his boyhood buddy, Mikey (Peter Falk), who comes to his aid in the middle of the night. Over the course of one long night stretching to dawn, they scramble through city streets, smoky bars, dark alleys, and a graveyard of ancient memories of camaraderie and duplicity. While they engage in mind games and accusations, a betrayal brews in the background. The tragedy of the drama is that they are likely the best friends either ever had, and the closest thing to family either of them has left. May takes her low-budget picture to the streets and lets friends and former collaborators Cassavetes and Falk hit their shaggy rhythm while she peels back their sneering bravado to find sad, scared, vulnerable men underneath. It was a down-and-dirty shoot for May, whose rush can be seen in momentary glimpses of her crew in a few shots and overhead lights sometimes dipping into the frame, but that same on-the-fly drive gives the film its edgy, restless energy. --Sean Axmaker

Description

From Elaine May, director of The Heartbreak Kid, comes Mikey & Nicky, a compelling crime thriller with a powerhouse cast, including John Cassavetes (Rosemary's Baby, The Killers), Peter Falk (TV's Columbo) and Ned Beatty (Deliverance, Cookie's Fortune). Nicky (Cassavetes) has embezzled a fortune from his Mafia bosses and is on the run. Nicky's only friend, Mikey (Falk) tries to help him escape; or will he lead him into a trap? Shot in a gritty, improvisational style, Mikey & Nicky is one of the most original and riveting crime films of the 1970s.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mikey & Nicky.......2007-07-04

Directed with confidence by Elaine May, this gritty, pared-to-the bone crime drama about a penny ante Mafia associate who's on the run after embezzling a cache of money from the mob has a freewheeling, improvisational quality that perfectly matches its air of anxious desperation. The film succeeds brilliantly because of the give-and-take rapport between Falk and Cassavetes, who come across like a bickering old couple destined at any moment for a violent meltdown. Ned Beatty also contributes an edgy turn as the hired killer out to nail Nicky. With betrayal looming like an ominous shadow, "Nicky" is an engaging study of street life and strained male relations.

5 out of 5 stars "Mikey, You've Gotta Let Me In!".......2005-05-11

"Mikey and Nicky" is a lost treasure, one of those gems that slip through the cracks when a big studio doesn't know what do to with a film that they think isn't "commercial" enough. Director Elaine May shot 1.5 million feet of film ("Gone With The Wind" took only 500,000 feet) and spent over two years tinkering with it before an exasperated Paramount Pictures took it away from her and dumped it into theaters in a butchered version in 1977. A completed. smoothly edited version wouldn't be available until the early '80's and this is the film that is now on DVD.

The film stars Peter Falk and John Cassavetes as two middle-aged gangsters. Nicky (Cassavetes) has stolen a lot of money from his employers and is on the run from a blustery, not-too-bright contract killer (Ned Beatty). A frantic Nicky calls Mikey (Falk), his friend from childhood, for help. Critics have noticed that this film seems almost a parody of Cassavetes' own directed films like "Faces" and "A Woman Under The Influence", and "Mikey and Nicky" does have a sort of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" improv feel to it. But a couple of viewings will reveal a careful structure to the screenplay. Different layers of these wiseguys' characters are gradually and surprisingly revealed until we get an almost literary, rounded understanding of them. Indeed, May is said to have started working on this as a play in the 1950's, and it does help to think of it as a theater piece that thrives on the action of language. (Although it is marvelously cinematic; as the two stumble through their long night together we get a terrific sense of the grungy 1970's urban landscape, so different from the clean, well-lighted convenience stores and mutiplexes of today.)

Nicky is impulsive, immature and wild; Mikey is something of a nerd who is pained that the bosses don't like him. Their relationship does remind you of the Harvey Keitel-Robert DeNiro friendship in "Mean Streets", filtered through the absurdist mob comedy of "Prizzi's Honor." Eventually, though, the laughs begin to stick in your throat as it becomes clear that May is primarily interested in the anatomy of betrayal and back-stabbing. These two know everything about each other from childhood and can't refrain from using that knowledge as weapons. The film eventually builds to a shattering climax that is one of the most effective I have seen in a long time. May's dark gangster fable is a clear ancestor in tone and humor to "The Sopranos", especially in its view of mobsters as working stiffs who play out office politics with guns and knives. If you are a fan of that HBO masterpiece, you should really see "Mikey and Nicky."

3 out of 5 stars So-so crime drama.......2005-03-12

John Cassavetes (Nicky) and Peter Falk (Mikey) are two small-time hoods; Nicky is about to be bumped off by the mob and goes to Mikey for help. But Mikey is an ambiguous character who seems to be helping Nicky, but really isn't. Nicky gets it in the end--right on Mikey's doorstep. There is very strong acting by Cassavetes and Falk, much of it apparently improvised, though much of the movie has a very stagey quality to it: lots of dialogue in set scenes, not much action. Ellaine May directed, though not very well. Forgettable.

5 out of 5 stars Gut punch: best American crime film of the 70s.......2005-01-19

This is a truly startling piece of cinema, considering it was directed by Elaine May, half the Nichols-May comedy duo and director of the biting comedies A New Leaf (sadly unavailable on DVD...or even VHS) and The Heartbreak Kid. Mikey and Nicky is unlike any other of May's films and, in fact, unlike any other American crime film, with one possible exception. And that exception is John Cassevetes' The Killing of a Chinese Bookie.

The similarity is seen in the same jarring cinema verite-like style on display. The constant close shots of what the two main characters do throws us right into their problems, their anguish, their mental manipulations. The often sounds-like-it-was-improvised dialogue was, in fact, not improvised--but the two actors playing the title characters, John Cassevetes and Peter Falk, did a lot of improvising while the film was originally being shot. Almost none of it was used, but watching this film, you can't tell that; it feels like they're the actual characters who could say anything based on who these characters are, rather than actors portraying the characters. Brilliant acting.

Cassevetes is a unique talent whose films are unlike any others in American cinema and these no doubt provided the impetus for May's technique here; her inspiration was strong enough to cast Cassevetes himself as well as one of his regulars, Falk, as the two leads. These two play off each other so well it is impossible to stop the film and go to the fridge for a beer.

They're both criminals, close to the bottom of the totem pole for that era--mid 70s (this was actually released in 1977). Nicky (Cassevetes) has made off with a chunk of loot from his bosses and Mikey (Falk), his friend, comes to Nicky's hotel room when Nicky phones him to come and help him out. What ensues is a powerful back and forth of Mikey's allegiance to their mob boss, most obviously shown with his connection to a shooter, played, interestingly enough, by Ned Beatty. Mikey's allegiance to his boss plays off Nicky's paranoia based on what he's done and his fear that he'll get iced.

If this were only a tale of simple betrayal, we could call it quits right here and say, yeah, sure, been there, done that. But Mikey and Nicky have a relationship that's too complex for that. You can feel, when they're together, that they need something from each other, that they can give each other a sense of belonging, even if only to the same underworld connection that no one else can give each of them. This edgy psychological bond is the powerful glue that holds not only the two of them together, but the viewer to the film.

Whether or not betrayal actually happens IS the point, no question. It's really how and why we get there that makes this film a stunning piece of work.

A real gut punch of a film, Mikey and Nicky slams it home. See it.

3 out of 5 stars How Did This Film Go Unoticed??.......2003-02-16

I Personally belive this film shows the gritty side of 1970's
crime world in great detail. Nickey, a nervous wreck thinks
someone has put a contract out on his life, calls upon his buddy
Mikey to help him as the two pair go on long night of tearing up
the streets and smokey bars and realizes their deep betrayal with every turn. Throughtout this film it sometimes resembles
1973's Mean Streets but not quite as good but holds it's own
with it's restless, edgy style.

5 out of 5 stars Quick - PRODUCT DESCRIPTION.......2007-02-07

"Quick is based on a series of adventure novels featuring a gorgeous hitwoman. When the title character, played by Teri Polo, is set up by her boss, she takes -- well -- quick action. Abducting the mob witness (Martin Donovan) whom she'd been hired to kill, Quick runs off to parts unknown. As the evil henchmen (Jeff Fahey, on the verge of better parts, and Robert Davi) close in, Quick decides to befriend her captive and entreat his aid. Tia Carrere also appears in this explosive actioner." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
