Only About Clambake.......2007-08-22

Although it has the worst title of any Elvis movie, "Clambake" (1967) is actually one of his better films. Which is surprising as it is one of his last and generally speaking each film seemed a bit worse than its predecessor. "Clambake's" salvation is certainly not in the soundtrack which is at best very ordinary, only the title song has any energy. Although there is an actual clambake scene on the beach about midway into the film, it seems thrown in just to justify the title, more impressive is a cameo of "Flipper" who had his own television show at that time.

I'm inclined to credit Shelley Fabares for the good vibe I got from this film. She plays "golddigger with a heart of gold" Dianne Carter, Elvis' ultimate love interest. I never cared for her uptight Mary Stone character on reruns of "The Donna Reed Show", and therefore paid almost no attention to her until recently. But since seeing her in "Ride the Wild Surf" and "Clambake" I've had a major attitude adjustment. "Clambake" was the third time she was tapped for the love interest role in an Elvis film so obviously she and the King had grown comfortable working together.

Their romance is a little different than the Elvis standard. In "Clambake" she does not start out hating or ignoring him. Instead they quickly become friends and she is obviously attracted, but she puts the brakes on any romance because she is hunting for a rich husband and has tycoon J.J. Jamison (Bill Bixby) squarely in her sights. She comes around in the end and their chemistry actually feels real, much like it did with Ann Margret in "Viva Las Vegas".

The comfort factor is also apparent between Elvis and Will Hutchins, his real-life buddy. Oil tycoon Scott (Elvis) pulls a "Prince and the Pauper" and swaps places with drifter Tom Wilson (Hutchins). He wants to find someone who loves him for himself. Hutchins is supposed to provide the film's main comic relief as he enjoys the life of the rich and famous, driving Scott's "Munsters" inspired convertible and surrounding himself with gorgeous women who can't dance very well. Although the director had Hutchins overplay the part it is so poorly written that they can't squeeze many laughs out of the premise. But having most of his scenes with Fabares and Hutchins seems to have relaxed Elvis considerably, which makes both he and his film more likable.

Contrary to most, I enjoyed the corny playground scene with the little girl who was afraid of the slide. The "Confidence" song is not a rip off of "High Hopes", the whole scene is a variation on the "Bounce Right Back" number Danny Kaye did in "Anything Goes". While "Confidence" is not much of a song, this surreal scene is priceless. I wonder what long-time fans thought as they watched Elvis and Hutchins do something so totally "Guffman"? Most entertainers only do embarrassing stuff like this when they are first breaking into the business.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

the boxset.......2007-08-15

All these movies are available in widescreen, so I don't know what the previous reviewer is complaining about. Yes, Clambake is one of the worst, but Follow That Dream and Kid Galahad are quite good. And Frankie and Johnny is an interesting concept and not bad.

The only movie not available on DVD is Elvis on Tour, though it was available on laser. Come on MGM, where is it???

The worst of Elvis.....all in one recycled boxed set!.......2007-08-07

Even the most dedicated Elvis fan will admit that the king made some pretty rotten movies, and 2 of his worst are here CLAMBAKE and FRANKIE AND JOHNNY, along with the (at best) mediocre FOLLOW THAT DREAM and KID GALAHAD.

Elvis may have been an "MGM MOVIE LEGEND" as the box infers, but none of his "MGM" movies are anywhere to be found in this set...they're UNITED ARTISTS movies. Why? Because "MGM" is merely a name affixed to a company that doesn't own the great old MGM library...Warner Brothers owns those films...so if you're looking for the best of Elvis at MGM (like JAILHOUSE ROCK, WORLD'S FAIR, VIVA VEGAS, THAT'S THE WAY IT IS) look elsewhere.

If you are an Elvis completist and don't mind spending your money on this ill-conceived collection, have at it!

What a missed opportunity.......2007-07-30

I was really hoping that MGM would have remastered these DVDs to give us anamorphic widescreen versions of these movies, but alas, it was not to be. I can't compare this new box set to the previous DVDs (since I didn't own them), but it looks like what we have here was just ported over from previous releases. So, while we have "Kid Galahad" looking marvelous in anamorphic widescreen, we also have an absolutely miserable non-anamorphic transfer of "Clambake." The other two movies fall somewhere in between: "Frankie and Johnny" is supposedly in its correct, anamorphic aspect ratio (and looks great), but with a 1:66 ratio there's very little "widescreen" to talk about, so it's hard to say if this is, indeed, the correct ratio. And "Follow That Dream" is a mixed bag, with a full-screen transfer on one side (why??), and a non-anamorphic widescreen on the other (WHY?).

So, MGM absolutely blew it. They had a chance to issue the definitive versions of these films on DVD, but chose instead to recycle lame product just to milk a little more money out of Elvis fans. Track down the "Kid Galahad" and "Frankie and Johnny" DVDs (assuming that F+J is, indeed, in the correct aspect ratio...anyone know for sure?), but there's no reason why, in 2007, we should have to suffer with non-anamorphic transfers, particularly one as bottom-of-the-barrel bad as "Clambake." My old VHS tape looked miles better than this pathetic DVD. Hey MGM, tell me where I can send these DVDs so that I can get REAL remastered versions someday!

THE KING HAS THE BUILDING. BUT NOT YOUR TV........2007-07-28

It's been 30 years since he left the building, but the King's legacy lives on. Elvis has been dead (or may not be) for 30 years, and this collection offers cinematic proof of his influence on pop culture--and we don't mean just the signature sneer and perfectly-coifed pompadour. Despite the silly titles and something sillier plots, Clambake, Kid Galahad, Follow that Dream and Frankie and Johnny showcase the man Who Would Be King in performances that are crisp and clever. Kid Galahad, a remake of the Eddie Robinson flick, is perhaps the best example; this departure from the typical Elvis frothy fare spotlights his true acting ability, not just as song-and-dance man filler. And we still eat up the savory "Clambake"--a hip version of The Prince and the Pauper as Elvis relinquishes his oil-baron father's fortune and trades identities with a penniless water ski instructor to learn about life from the bottom up. It's a rock and roll romp that co-stars our fave Shelley Fabares and the always underrated Bill Bixby. Rock on!

Still Sizzles.......2007-08-22

If you enter with tongue firmly planted in cheek, and disbelief heartily suspended, the Flint series will not disappoint. James Coburn was the master of the slow-burn, and underrated as a comic actor--which is a shame, because the series is comedic in nature, despite the over the top earnestness. highly recommended!

Great spy comedy and adventure.......2007-07-29

What's with these reviews that are simply parroting the DVD contents and Amazon's own description? Nothing like trying to stuff your review numbers with garbage in an attempt to make the top 1000, 500 or whatever. Make it a real review or shut up!

That said, if you have not seen the Flint movies, do so! Envisioned as a competitor to the James Bond franchise, the Flint movies follow the adventures of secret-agent, super-playboy, part mad-scientist Derek Flint. Played by James Coburn (one of the last people to be personally trained by Bruce Lee), the movies are part tongue-in-cheek with plenty of action. Yes, the special effects are dated, but the plots are still pretty darn good. May people consider the movies to be a simple spoof on James Bond, kinda like the Dean Martin Matt Helm movies. The Austin Power's telephone ring - taken right off the Flint movies. It's the telephone ring on the Presidential Hotline to Lloyd Cramden's. The soundtracks from both movies were recently released - by popular demand. Not bad for 30 year old movies!

In Like Flint: The last film that 20th Century Fox filmed in CinemeScope, this sets Flint against some of the world's wealthiest women, bent on world domination. How? By brainwashing them with hair-dryers at the Fabulous Face salon, located on a private island.....

Our Man Flint: This sets Flint against some of the world's brightest scientists, bent on world domination. How? By controlling the weather. The machine is located on a, well, a private island.....

OK, so the plots are similar, but come on. Flint making "bloooba, bloooba" sounds - communicating with dolphins. Moving around in space via his sonic belt buckle. Nailing a fly with his cigarette blow-gun. The gymnastic fight scene. The weightless battle in space. All priceless moments. Watch these two movies and you'll be thinking "so that's where (insert movie name here) got the idea!"

We bought these movies as a gift for our neice and goddaughter, and then kept one for ourselves. Our entire family enjoyed watching these wholesome, moralistic movies with great acting and well known actors. The American Girl products are very popular with girls, and it eases my mind as a parent to know that these items have some "substance" behind them.

American Girl Movie Collection.......2007-07-30

This collection is a wonderful way for children to learn about the life of children from different time periods. I found the stories delightful, informative, and historically correct. Personally I enjoyed Samantha most, but I don't want to short change the others. Hopefully the other stories from The American Girl series will also be made into movies. As a teacher, I would encourage parents to make these movies a must for their child to see, boys as well as girls. This is great family entertainment.

Each of these movies is excellent! All based upon the books from the American Girl collection, they are beautifully written and directed . . . very poignant . . . a great way for young girls 7+ to learn about historical time periods through the eyes of girls near their own age. My daughter and her friends all love these movies and so do I!

From good books to just o.k. movies.......2007-08-29

Being a fan of Robert B. Parker's books, and loving one of his characters in the form of Spencer, it follows that one would want to see him come to life in film form. Somewhere in the translation from book to screen, something was lost for me. Robert Urich does only an adequate job, perhaps due to the script he was given, but Hawke, as portrayed in the videos, loses his "cool" demeanor, (the actor seems to be trying way too hard to be cool) and the Susan Silverman character is not portrayed, to my eyes and ears, in any of the ways as she comes across in the written word of Parker nor are her looks, dress or behavior as Parker/Spencer describe. I always laugh out loud while reading Parker's Spencer, especially when he and friend Hawke spar, and much of that relationship is missing, for me, in the videos. The character of Susan is too present in the videos, much more than she is in the books. I do know that those of us who read a lot, form pictures in our minds of how the characters look, move, and speak, so it may be a mistake, on my part, to watch a movie after reading the book and "knowing" in my own mind how those characters should come across. I will continue to read Parker and all his much loved characters, but please, no more Spencer depicted on the screen unless drastic changes are made in the characterizations.

Decent Movies if You Are a Spenser Fan.......2007-07-15

I love Robert B. Parker's Spenser character. As a kid growing up I also loved the television series. Spenser and Hawk are, simply put, two of the greatest characters in crime fiction ever.

These four Spenser movies starring Robert Urich as Spenser and Avery Brooks as Hawk, were produced in the mid-1990's and are nostalgic for me, reminding me of the television series. That said they are made for television movies with all the flaws. The supporting cast is pretty weak in terms of acting ability and the stories are just a tad less dramatic than the books. It's kind of like watching the Lifetime Movie of Week for men. So, overall, after seriously viewing these movies again, I have to say they are not all that good. Urich and Brooks do make a great team though and while not totally true to Spenser, are close enough, and entertaining enough.

If you renember the Spenser for Hire television series, you will truly enjoy this colleciton of four full length movies. Spenser and Hawk are great and set the tone for exciting stories. This is a must for suspense and mystery buffs, with some humor thrown in.

Steven Soderbergh's Traffic is, in my opinion, a well put-together masterpiece. It is a film that truly shows off the talent of its director and its stars in a completely interesting way. The acting is top-notch (be sure to look for Don Cheadle and Louis Guzman as two DEA agents and Steven Bauer as a California drug lord) and the cinematography is excellent. I would easily recommend Traffic to anyone interested in learning how to make a movie. 5 Stars

Sure, the brits may have done a fine job on there show, but Traffic is one of the better films to come out since 2000. The film has a haunting quality that is starting to resonate more and more in today's society.

Compared to the British series of the same title this is a very bad rip off. The acting is of poor quality as well as the dialogue. I would not waste my dime on this, instead I would get the original.

hard to follow........2007-08-28

I am not going to take the time to tell you what this was about. Basically because I have no clue myself. This movie was so freaking hard to follow. It was SO long. I guess I understand. The guy finally realized his family was more important than his job and drugs can have an effect on even the most unsuspecting families and pepole. But holy man make it like and hour and a half amd save me the time. Perhaps if I watch this again it will make more sense to me. I love movies I have 304. Even though half of them are still sealed up I watch alot of them. So don't think I am some 22 year old who is just a moron. This was a good movie I think. They just made it hard to follow. Going from one story to another. Over and over. Give it a try I guess.

Traffic .......2007-07-26

This story is very interesting and takes a look at the drug trade, and the drugs effect on people in all walks of life. It starts out with grainy, yellowish haze to help enhance a scene in the Mexico desert. Michael Douglas plays Bob Wakefield, a political figure whose position is led to stressful circumstances when his own daughter falls to deep in the very substances he is supposed to be fighting on a National level. Outstanding cast also includes Dennis Quaid, Catherine Zeta Jones and Don Cheadle. This is one of those stories that could be considered art on the big screen when it comes to telling an interesting drama that touches on a major issue within our world.

Three separate stories...one seamless screenplay: TRAFFIC.......2007-07-14

Thought provoking, suspenseful, illuminating and candid. Actors love working for Steven Soderbergh and it shows. Each role was well developed and fully realized on screen. This movie is powerful!

At times gripping, at times kind of slow.......2007-02-19

I still don't understand the love for Crash, the recent film centering on the racism issue. It seemed like a film that had a couple good ideas but they were featured in a bad movie which makes its win for Best Picture all the more confusing. That film for some reason reminded me of Traffic which centers on another important issue; this one being about the drug war and its effects on addicts and non-addicts. While you can obviously tell Traffic is an important film and it is indeed a good one, it's also slightly marred by erratic pacing and a bit of uninteresting characters.

The film, unlike let's say, Magnolia or Short Cuts, is 3 separate storylines with one thing in common: the drug trade. In one story set in Ohio, Robert Wakefield is the newly-appointed "drug czar" crusading against decreasing the amount of drugs in the country. However, he has a daughter that's quickly starting to get addicted. In San Diego, Helena sees her husband arrested while she's unaware he's a key player in the drug trade with another captured by DEA agents who is going to testify. And finally in Mexico, a highway patrol cop gets involved in the corruption between drug cartels and the want for control of the drugs going in and out of Mexico and the US.

To help the audience differentiate the different places, a color code has been given to each segment. The Wakefield story looks so unbelievably blue that you wouldn't be surprised if character blood looked blue too. San Diego looks more traditional but a bit overexposed making it more brighter while Mexico looks like an indie movie with a very gritty and raw feel and a jittery looking camera. It helps keep track of where you are but like I said, you've never seen skin tones look so blue before; they really overdid it in some cases.

The best storyline is most likely Mexico since it's anchored by Benicio Del Toro who certainly deserved his Oscar. It's also got a more interesting story and a better look to it despite its intentional amateurishness. The one that isn't that great is probably the Wakefield story since it never gripped me all that much. San Diego was alright but nothing to special. Ultimately the problem with the film was that the film just felt slow. Ever watch one of those movies where it feels like you've been watching for longer than the movie is? Not to mention that sometimes one storyline is starting to get interesting then whoosh! off to somewhere else. A similar problem plagued Babel since the Chieko story was ultimately more emotional and gripping than the others. Some will probably disagree and say all stories in Traffic were good but I always groaned slightly when we moved away from Mexico.

It's certainly an ambitious film so not going to argue there and it's a great film at times but I wouldn't say it was my favorite film of 2000.

Not too spectacular.......2003-12-16

LA confidential is awesome, but I can't really see the logic in packaging it with a bunch of mediocre "hits". City of Angels is not a good movie, and a perfect murder lacks any depth whatsoever. Contact is interesting, but too slow to hold much interest. Don't buy this gift set, instead, pick out the movies individually....LA confidential being the best.
